To him, if you don't like your phone as it is or would like some new features, the answer is not to install some software that makes it do what you want, but rather to go buy a new phone. Very nice indeed, from a marketing point of view.

> (Ryan not being able to buy an unlocked phone)
> The key is to ask for the right thing.

Yeah, it's a little bit like Monty Python's "Naughty Chemists" sketch. I spent 5 years inside that company in a core networking role and have seen his business decisions hurt the company (part of the reason I left.) They were lucky apple wanted to work with them. The ROKR/moto deal was a flop and lost money for both parties, AT&T wasn't the 2nd choice, they were the last choice, behind TMO. With all of the network quality problems caused by the Cingular/AT&T merger, AT&T was desperate for a big ticket sales item. This was why Apple was able to get them to agree to their iPhone demands. If you don't believe this, just look at the press on the iPhone unlocking, Apple is doing their best to prevent it, yet AT&T doesn't say a word. There are many more pieces beyond account migrations, from SS7 translations, VLR mobility routing changes, trunk consolidation, and much more. An example of a poor decision from above, during the network integration, management decided it was a good time to change core hardware vendors. Ripping out entire switch infrastructure to replace it with anothers during such a large scale integration is begging for problems, and problems were definitely caused.

And RE: unlocking. A carrier makes enough of a profit from monthly rates to benefit from eating the cost of a handset in exchange for a service commitment. However, without that contract, there's no point in subsidizing a phone's cost. Also, activating equipment you own already gives you the benefit of having no contract...
