Doesn't Nintendo know we've got a bit of a weight problem going on over here Stateside? The company just released its highly-anticipated
Wii Fit in Japan today, which will most likely sell like gangbusters, while simultaneously symbolizing the death of the hardcore gamer in Nintendo land to a small portion of the faithful not completely won over by Miyamoto's latest charming contraption. Unfortunately, the Wii Fit won't be crossing any oceans until early next year. Nintendo's official Japan street date for Wii Fit was December 1st, but it seems that at least a few online shops are disregarding that pesky fact.

Maybe they already DO realize that Americans are fat, and they need to re-tool that pad to make it strong enough to handle the hefty American stomps I'm sure it will receive.
SteveJ @ Nov 30th 2007 2:05PM
Rather, the hefty weight of the short couch leg it will be put under.
BubbaGump @ Dec 4th 2007 3:39AM
haha,
the only thing that can withstand the weight of fat Americans is Chuck Norris,
and even he has trouble,
shows the fat capacity of Americans
Kozzi @ Nov 30th 2007 4:41PM
after reading the topic and your comment, I lol'd.
TEM @ Nov 30th 2007 9:37PM
I don't know about you, but I think there is something wonderful about a country where everyone, especially poor people, can afford to get fat.
I'm not saying it's healthy, but then again, I don't think it is an "epidemic" the way the health-nazis claim it is.
As for the Wii Fit, I hope there is an online multiplayer mode, as that would rock.
jbodar @ Dec 3rd 2007 5:32PM
@TEM
What? That doesn't even make sense. People get fat BECAUSE they eat cheap, processed foods that have hardly any nutritive value, like fast food, chips, candy, etc. It's more expensive to buy "good" foods like fruits and veggies.
Jason Carroll @ Nov 30th 2007 2:02PM
just fix grammatical error and delete my post:
Unfortunately, the Wii Fit won't *BE* crossing...
rzlmlchm009 @ Nov 30th 2007 5:29PM
Apparently, they didn't delete your post, and then everyone marked you down. Go figure.
Jason Carroll @ Nov 30th 2007 5:46PM
hahaha! i suck! i just ranked me down too...just for fun.
Jason Carroll @ Nov 30th 2007 5:47PM
but i just noticed...they fixed it...so...
mikey @ Nov 30th 2007 2:04PM
Can't wait for it
Matthew Hilario @ Nov 30th 2007 2:46PM
by the time it comes out here you'll be too fat to play.
Pete @ Nov 30th 2007 2:09PM
I think what they could do with this thing is incorporate it into a FPS. You could use the balance board for movement. Even if you choose to sit in a chair, you could use your feet to tilt the board forward, backward, left and right to move your character on the screen. Combine that with the Wiimote for aiming...it might just work.
conor.galligan @ Nov 30th 2007 2:52PM
noice. that'd be pretty cool.
Thunderbuck @ Nov 30th 2007 3:22PM
Great FREAKIN idea, dude... maybe incorporate some running in place if you have to move in a hurry...
Who says video games are for couch potatoes?
Matt @ Nov 30th 2007 3:35PM
I think it would work better for leaning around corners and such.
Tim @ Dec 1st 2007 12:50AM
It's like an arcade light gun game called Police 911 or something. It's just like a normal light gun game, except your standing on a pressure sensitive mat so you need to duck and lean to avoid bullets and peek around corners and stuff. I can totally see that being applied to a Wii FPS/light gun game.
Herman Manfred @ Nov 30th 2007 2:09PM
What's the upper weight limit that the Wii Fit can handle!
Somehow I think obese Americans are somewhat...weightier...than obese Japanese.
Ian H. @ Nov 30th 2007 3:38PM
Are there many American sumo wrestlers?
Rainier @ Nov 30th 2007 5:02PM
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:American_sumo_wrestlers
Sumo wrestlers have a reason to be their weight - obese Americans only have excuses.
Reader @ Nov 30th 2007 6:55PM
Rainier, you missed the point. Japanese can get pretty fucking fat too, just like us Americans.
Jason Collin @ Nov 30th 2007 10:09PM
I can go weeks without seeing an obese Japanese in Tokyo, however many of the tourists I see stick out like a sore (fat?) thumb for their size.
Plus, if a Japanese is chubby, they dress in a nice way still, and modestly, so it downplays their chubbiness.
Herman Manfred @ Nov 30th 2007 2:11PM
I suppose I should have added:
"Oh great! Now we'll have a Wii accessory that's
as popular as the Wii itself so we won't be able
to find EITHER in any store anywhere!"
Luigi193 @ Nov 30th 2007 2:13PM
Not fat, "Fluffy"
Bloobie @ Nov 30th 2007 3:28PM
Or as Cartman would say, "Pleasantly plump!"
Lemmiwinks @ Nov 30th 2007 4:38PM
Not "Pleasantly Plump"
"*Festively* Plump"
IndiaTech @ Dec 1st 2007 12:17AM
I think Cartman is already pacing outside EV Games waiting for this thing to come out... "Come on... COME OON..."

Ronald @ Nov 30th 2007 4:10PM
This looks great, cant wait to try it. One question though, why do these games usually make it to one country quicker than others? If the software is done is done, I dont think translation would take that long to do.
paul34 @ Nov 30th 2007 2:20PM
The Wii Fit US edition - now with 300% more steel-reinforced plastic! It can almost hold you fat Americans now!
somuchh8 @ Dec 2nd 2007 3:32PM
I too want this! There will probably be a pre-order. I hope there is a pre-order..
Johnny @ Nov 30th 2007 2:31PM
So how exactly do you use wii fit?
John @ Nov 30th 2007 2:34PM
Never seen Sumo wrestling?
rzlmlchm009 @ Nov 30th 2007 2:42PM
Nah, Wii Wrestling: Sumo edition- won't come out until the following year. ;)
Mark @ Nov 30th 2007 2:42PM
This is definitely a gift for *her*.
paul34 @ Nov 30th 2007 2:43PM
I have a feeling that if you buy this as a present for *her*, that'll probably be the last present you ever give her.
lupinstel @ Nov 30th 2007 2:57PM
To make this holiday extra special may I recommend pairing your girlfriends Wii Fit present with a vacuum cleaner and size 2 lingerie.
John @ Nov 30th 2007 5:53PM
@lupinstel
Size 2? What kind of heifers are you dating?!
sh1ft3r @ Dec 1st 2007 12:55AM
Enough with the fat American jokes already. Don't blame America, blame fast food. We're looking at you McD, who has been in America since 1940. McD has only been in the UK since 1974 while McD just came to Japan in 1997. So soon enough the rest of the world can be a bunch of fatties like "all of america, fat and stupid".
Wii fit ought to be great; kind of like DDR without all the club music and floaty flourescent symbols.
conor.galligan @ Nov 30th 2007 2:47PM
Japan: Wii Fit
US: Wii Fat
Matthew Hilario @ Nov 30th 2007 2:46PM
sumo wrestlers wii too.
Hitchcock @ Nov 30th 2007 3:01PM
Um, it is Dec 1st in Japan already. They aren't selling it early.
Ed @ Nov 30th 2007 3:13PM
the international date line strikes again!
fistpittingnork @ Nov 30th 2007 3:03PM
Toss in a pair of Richard Simmons shorts and I'm sold.
wheatie @ Nov 30th 2007 3:06PM
I don't think the weight capacity will be an issue. Think about it, who will use this but people who are already fit or focused on exercise. At the very least I don't think you'll see some 300 lb guy using it.
This will sell like hot cakes (pun intended) my wife already wants one and is asking if they have a pilates game or workout.
It is hard to find a lot of information about the wii fit on the net. I've searched sites and noone really has all that much information on what it will come with and when it will be released in the US.
Does anyone know of a good site, article link that gives real details? If so please post.
Doesn't Nintendo want to release in the US before xmas holiday season or do they just rightfully think we'll buy it as soon as it is released regardless when.
I guess when you have a great product normal marketing strategies are not necessary it sells it sell like the wii.
js @ Nov 30th 2007 3:31PM
Weight is an issue. If someone in America gets injured because their Wii Fit broke then all they can do is
SUE SUE SUE
Yan @ Nov 30th 2007 3:33PM
You assume that people with weight/health problems won't use it but failed to take into account the success of the various dance simulation games that helped many lose weight.
laughallway2bank @ Nov 30th 2007 4:21PM
your right about info on this thing... i even went to the nintendo site... the wii website... no info anywhere on it. search google and yahoo... brings me to engadget...
However i think your wrong about the weight not being an issue... americans are large, not just fat... think of our professional/college teams basketball, football... whatever - and then take a look at japans -
not to mention there has been talks that this could be used as another controller for other games (other than just wiifit) ...
and if your planning on running and jumping on this thing good luck (the force in pounds while running/jumping is several TIMES the weight of the person)
don't want to get into the specifics and the physics but...
you figure even for a 150 pound person, if they jump and it's twice their weight (in force) put on this thing your talkin 300 lbs (depending on the person the force generated could be much more)
just a thought... think of how many arcades had a DDR pad that didn't work anymore.
rzlmlchm009 @ Nov 30th 2007 5:38PM
Sell like hotcakes?
Some of us Americans will buy it and never use it. The rest will just continue sitting around and eating hotcakes.
The ones that are really serious about excercise will probably continue jogging or working out at a gym, etc.
A-dog @ Dec 1st 2007 1:44AM
"I don't think the weight capacity will be an issue. Think about it, who will use this but people who are already fit or focused on exercise. At the very least I don't think you'll see some 300 lb guy using it."
As a 275-lb olympic weightlifter, I can guarantee you that there are some of us out there nearly at that 300lb mark who are interested in exercise *and* the wii fit. Whether it snaps under the weight of my beautifully-sculpted calves, though, is another story. I'll keep you posted.
Greg @ Nov 30th 2007 3:58PM
Hopefully Wii fit can hold almost 300 pounds for those of us out there who are not fat, but close to 7 feet tall.
