Bogner's Solar-Powered Ski Suit from space
No matter how often we humans fail at designing "futuristic" fashion that the real future inevitably disowns, it's always fun to try. Bogner's got a good thing going here, what with a few solar panels and myriad of LED lights embedded into the ski suit of the future, and since the suit was designed to help with Munich's bid for the 2018 Winter Olympics, that gives us plenty of time to find the design perfectly detestable when the real future rolls around. The solar panels use thin film tech developed by OSRAM, with an output ratio of 55 lumen / watt. Even with that kind of efficiency, the moon must be pretty dang bright over there in Germany to power the suit as shown. Who knew?

WTF!? Reminds me of Close Encounters of the Third Kind... Someone call Richard Dreyfuss!
Flashpoint @ Dec 5th 2007 11:13AM
If you get caught wearing this in my city, you're gonna be so killed.
Jagannath A @ Dec 5th 2007 11:44AM
I know where u live !
Blackstar @ Dec 5th 2007 12:32PM
A male model was found dead today shortly after demoing Bogner's Solar-Powered Light Ski suit. Initial reports pointed to the cause of death was an assault by onlookers but CSI has confirmed he actually died of embarrassment.
monkfishbandana @ Dec 5th 2007 3:12PM
Am I the only one who took one glance at the picture and thought "...nice"?
It looks like he's wearing an Audi R8. And that wagon is damn fine.
Flashpoint @ Dec 5th 2007 11:14AM
Don't just go to the gay bar...bring the gay bar with you.
Adoniteking @ Dec 5th 2007 2:58PM
you could tell from his swag that he is probably humming "am too sexy for myself..." in his mind just to keep his confidence high.
momotarosan @ Dec 5th 2007 11:19AM
don't be silly, everyone knows that solar panels don't work at night

Green Arrow style in Smallville...lol
bonkeykong @ Dec 5th 2007 11:28AM
I bet he wears a bluetooth headset.
letstakeawalk @ Dec 5th 2007 11:40AM
I could see this having legitimate application for bicyclists and pedestrians at night when visibility to traffic is highly desirable. Maybe a turn indicator could be incorporated...As long as there is an off switch, I could be interested in one of these!
bob sakamano @ Dec 5th 2007 11:42AM
is that a taller tom cruise modeling?
Asystole @ Dec 5th 2007 11:43AM
This is actually a really good idea with all the sun you get snowboarding/skiing, not only will it help with visibility of other people on the mountain but it could actually save your life if you got lost or stuck somewhere and needed to flag people down. And other than the lights it looks like a normal snow jacket, I don't know what you guys are complaining about. I hope they actually try to manufacture them and get these into production, they could make a killing.
tommy @ Dec 5th 2007 11:44AM
The jacket should have a scrolling marquee: "Ich bin eine Loser"
nightshade @ Dec 5th 2007 4:54PM
coming from germany i just laughed my ass off..
"Ich bin ein Loser" was probaby what you meant but damn, why are there so many german phrases known to you americans? it isn`t as though you knew.. just to have an example.. as many russian phrases.
Realy beats me.. (noticed tha in the last couple of years in various tvshows, just german scentences encorporated in a "normal" conversation without any translation).
cant just be because you won or you´d all speak fluent arabic..
tommy @ Dec 6th 2007 3:57PM
I'm glad some one out there got my joke... ;)
My edge is that I have a few German colleagues...
Ken Burgett @ Dec 5th 2007 12:02PM
Don't wear that outfit into Logan Airport, you could be shot as a bomber.
rav97 @ Dec 5th 2007 4:22PM
On the other hand, if you wear that outfit you probably deserve to be shot anyway...
octoberasian @ Dec 5th 2007 12:06PM
Notice how the guy in the picture is just *trying* to look cool while strutting with that? XD
It just seems that way. But, I wouldn't be caught dead wearing that. Probably only use I see is when I bike, even still... I just wouldn't wear it. It just screams out: "Hey, jump me because I look too dorky for my own good."
Matthew Hilario @ Dec 5th 2007 12:30PM
purchase within the next 10 minutes and get a free pair of L.A. Lights.

Before I read the comments I actually thought that people placed that ...creation of visual violence in the "groovy" directory. Yes, I feel stupid now.
nick2046 @ Dec 5th 2007 6:05PM
He is so cute; daddy, can i hang him on our Xmas tree, please?
eurobloke @ Dec 5th 2007 1:14PM
I could see this technology on something like firemen's uniforms so they be found in dark and smoky environments, or on policemen, so at night, they could be recognised.
Essentially any night worker, we all know how good reflective stripes are in the dark (good, but not good enough).
swmarc @ Dec 5th 2007 1:30PM
Fire departments already use devices for locating each other. The use lights as well as a annoying alarm system the is incredibly loud.
Froggy @ Dec 5th 2007 1:35PM
what about scratching the solar panels when you take a dive? 'cos let's face it, if you don't go down at least once, you're not pushing yourself.
Marshall @ Dec 5th 2007 1:38PM
This would be pretty nice for bicycle commuters. Maybe a few more LEDs could be moved from the chest to the arms, and the headlamp (at least it looks like there is an integrated headlamp) could be made usable.
Also, wouldn't it be more efficient to have the solar panels in the shoulder/chest/head area rather than the stomach? If you are in a crouched or bent position (which often happens in sports) the current ones would be blocked.
Naveed @ Dec 5th 2007 2:25PM
take the lights off and add heaters for when your skiing in the shade or when its sun down. not sure how lights are skiing specific
suntiger @ Dec 5th 2007 3:05PM
Is it bad that I looked at that and thought "Do want!"?
Ayle @ Dec 5th 2007 3:19PM
Me too... I don't understand all the gay and loser jokes...
Ellianth @ Dec 5th 2007 3:47PM
Are either of you gay or a loser?
I looked at it and thought it was cool, but i fall in the first category.
*shrug*
P.S.
Is that a battery pack in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?
Say what? your leg is deformed? Eww gross!
ugg.tryptophan @ Dec 5th 2007 8:56PM
i thought something closer to close, but no dice. those three lights in between the bars is awkward, and the the goggles look dorky. but i would so buy this as a mod project, probably take out the lights and get goggles that fit
suntiger @ Dec 5th 2007 9:00PM
Ellianth: I also fall in the first category, but considering that I have no fashion sense, that's probably not why I liked it. I just think it looks good, you know? Though better with the hood down/zipped off, probably.
kojo87 @ Dec 5th 2007 5:23PM
Since when do clothes need to be powered?
Silencio @ Dec 5th 2007 8:54PM
Two words: Daft Punk.
Walt @ Dec 5th 2007 9:25PM
This reminds me of the Green Arrow suit from "Smallville"..

Rhinestone Cowboy
Take a normal cowboy shirt and put a hood on it and light up the Rhinstones :] Country mods :]
The other photo of this guy has the red leds on the back of the jacket - as someone said on the original comments for the article "brake lights fog lights" :]
