For instance, all the major auto companies have scads of patents for parts of their vehicles, but nobody can patent "car." This is a really simple case, but please appreciate the trouble I had to go to to make a car analogy. It is also worth noting that this is how the patent system is SUPPOSED to work, but today it is broken so badly that nothing is certain.

Getting back to the subject at hand... I suspect that Dell is being careful about their specific implementation of this technology, and has held the drivers until they are vetted by their legal department as not infringing on Apple's patent. Apple has no tablet PC. Comparing a tablet PC to an iPhone/Touch is like comparing a bicycle to a car. (you thought I was going to say apples and oranges, didn't ya?) So, there is really no reason to talk about Apple outside of this context. I am not an Apple hater, but this is just not an apple appropriate topic (if we are discussing Apple products.) It would be like comparing the tablet PC to your mom - sure, there both slim, sexy, can do different positions, can take a pounding and respond well to my touch, but I personally will not spend $2500 for either of them. Now, is that an appropriate conversation regarding this topic? I don't think so - anyone else care to add?

j/k

larcen007

Comments on

There are a couple of reasons for this.

1. Most of us non-Apple types (or in my case, ex-Apple types) are really, really, REALLY tired of hearing about one brand of computer shoved in our faces all the time even when it's completely irrelevent to the discussion. It's like going into a restaurant and ordering pancakes and having the waiter explain why the pancakes would be better if Apple made them. It's tiresome.

2. We're also tired of the massive hype the industry smothers on Apple. It's wildly out of proportion with the actual marketshare they have and it's resulted in a weird view that all new and interesting things come from Apple, which simply isn't true. That came to a head here with the month long iPhone orgy that resulted in a huge backlash against Engadget that we're still just working through.

3. We're tired of the confrontational attitude of most Apple fans. It's not good enough to say 'Here's something from Apple and we think it's cool,' it has to be accompanied with 'And your PC choices are garbage and evil and you dress funny and smell.' (See Apple's current Mac vs PC ads.) That's not going to help garner much love from non-Apple types.

4. We're also tired of the implication that Mac users are somehow more sophisticated, individualistic, intelligent, cultured, artistic and creative than PC users. Apple has a style. It's a nice one. But it's not a style everyone wants. One nice thing about the PC world is that there's diversity. If you don't like one system, you can find another. The Mac world, ironically, seems to be about one system, one design, one way of doings things: the Apple way.

5. And then there's the general lack of finesse. Mac fans seem to be incapable of subtlety. Everything is loud and insulting and obnoxious and usually inappropriate and often just wrong. Again, the Mac vs PC ads are loaded with factual errors (like the one which claims Mac laptops run Vista fastest) or exaggerations (like the one which implies that the only thing you can do on a PC is greyscale pie charts).

There are other reasons as well, but I think these are the top five. I hope this clears things up for you.

Jeff Lewis

Comments on

Wow.. not only is that boring - but most of the 'technology' they seem to be claiming as being a feature of capacitive touch screens is actually just the TabletPC features of Vista.

My Samsung Q1U with a resistive screen does the flick gestures and handwriting as well, and a growing number of laptops have hybrid screens with resistive touch AND Wacom electromagnetic digitisers (not electrostatic as he calls it).

Really, the only advantages capacitive has are no need for a layer on the screen that resistive has, more accuracy in detection (which you lose because you're using a finger - but anyway) and the potential for multitouch.

It's worth it as it's a cleaner, clearer experience - but is it worth $2500?

Nope.

Jeff Lewis

Comments on

You can talk all you want about this. But the multi-touch is one of the patents of Apple, everyone can speak out the word 'multi-touch', but only Apple knows how to make use of it,and only Apple can use it! Then how is the DELL? Well, well, the finger touch or as the single touch tech. is as far as DELL can go, although the tochscreen is capacitive one!
