Sony's cookin' up a mylo 2

Well hello there, never-before-seen-device bearing the mylo name, nice to meet you. We can only assume by your camera-equipped backside (and your designation as the "COM-2") that you're the mylo 2 we'd heard rumors about -- but no thanks to the tight-lipped FCC, we don't know much more than the fact that you'll be one-upping your predecessor by tacking 802.11g onto its b. Still, now that we've got you in our sights, the rest of your specs can't remain secret for long.

I have the first mylo, and i used it 2 times. I never recharged the battery after the first day of using it.

The mylo is the worst thing i ever own. It is a bad mp3 player, bad video player, extremely bad web browser and sound bad on skype...

Please Sony, don't put another thing like that on a market that have the PERFECT n800 and n810 for the same price

I work at Circuit City and I was surprised how many people were actually interested in the device we had on display, the thing is they've never heard of it

i really wanted a mylo, the few things that kept me away was....
1. The Price
2. no AIM myself and alot of people i know uses aim
3. I kept away because I was hoping for a iPod Touch around the same price....which happened

Yes you can, with homebrew i believe. I like the look of it, though. It looks like a cool slider-psp-thingy, rather than a knockoff n-gage like the first one.

you have no idea what psp homebrew there is...

theres AFKIM (aim/icq/yahoo/etc.)
and so many other programs which i dont use alot

As far as i know, the mylo serves for IM, browsing, and media playback.

I do all of these frequently on a psp. (And these don't even require homebrew, it's just that IMing through a web portal on the psp is horrible, that's why I use a homebrew IM app.)

Oh, i guess you can. Homebrew, heh, forgot about those guys for a minute there. they had AIM and sorta skype running on the DS, dont know why i forgot about them

I think this device was and is very cool, if they allowed it to become a phone they could have competed with many of the devices that were going to arrive but they never did and now it will be come another "too little, too late."

I really liked the Mylo concept..
The reasons I never bought were:
1. The Price
2. 802.11b
3. Buttons were hard to press
4. The resolution

I'd consider buying the the new mylo when it comes out but I'm probably going to be leaning towards the devices on the Open Handset Alliance

Honestly, do you need your Wifi faster than 802.11b on a mylo? Unlikely. I doubt skype or browsing would be any better/ faster.

The concept of the Mylo device is actually a very good one; however Sony I think is hampered by two major obstacles.

1. The price is way too high.

2. They do not have an online presence

In order for the Mylo to really work flawlessly it needs to have an ecosystem to exist in. This is actually a device that would be perfect for Microsoft to roll out to integrate into the whole Live.com suite. Blogging, IM, email, voice chat, Xbox Live and so forth. Unfortunately, Sony does not have any sort of service and we have seen in the past Sony is rather horrible with developing software and online properties (ahem…Connect Store).

The question however with a device like this is, do they tailor it to one service provider or do they try to make it work with all services? If they strike a deal with Yahoo, Microsoft, or Google for example to work with one company’s suite of tools I would imagine it would work extremely well. You are just locked into one service though. On the other hand we have seen time and time again Sony try to be a “Jack of all Trades” with its devices and they always end up being mediocre at best. The tools in a Mylo need to be built in and not be done through a web browser or something to make it work. Sadly, I also think Sony will need to really tailor the device to an entire ecosystem for it to really be useful. Make it work with ALL of Yahoo’s, or Microsoft’s or Google’s services. Just putting in support for AIM, MSN and Yahoo with chat and email won’t cut it. I would need something like full Flickr support, full Google Docs, or Fully Live.com support.

The first version looked cool but it seemed to fall short in all of its features. This time around maybe they'll try and push the boundaries more, with perhaps an OLED screen for instance.

From the drawing it looks like they'll put in a pretty decent camera too.

It's gotta be cheaper, have a better keyboard, and a bigger screen.

Considering the memory is the biggest cost in the iPod Touch, how cheap would a 1 or 2GB version be? Trade the larger screen for a slider with decent keyboard, and throw in a memory card slot.

The problem is the mylo was built to scale to millions sold per month, that's why it ended up being so half-assed in many ways. Sony's old Palm PDA's were actually better for the mylo's intended tasks. I used a TG50 for years and it was a very nice unit.

I think that they could put in quad & have a very nice qwerty slider, something they don't currently have.

Unless everyone gets access to wimax I just don't see the point save for college students or people who never leave a wifi environment.

I can guarantee you right now that the reverse of that image (from the front) is a panel completely taken up by a touch screen, and the slide down panel is a keypad.

I think the Mylo represented a very funky version of the "Great Gadget Convergence" that is happening now, only that it failed to take off. I'd certainly be interested to take a look at it if they get it right though. I'm not holding my breath however, since they had ample opportunity to fix the PSP slim with camera and an extra thumb stick upgrade but didn't.
