Upcoming AMD Radeon HD 3450, 3470 and 3650 low-enders leaked
DisplayPort is the most fun when you snag it on the cheap, and according to some leaked specs over on Madbox PC, AMD has a $50 Radeon in the works that'll have you running that 30-incher off of USB for a pittance. The Radeon HD 3450 card is based on the RV620 core, running at 525MHz, with 256MB of RAM and just a VGA plug to accompany the DisplayPort. The HD 3470 ($60) hits 600MHz and 512MB of RAM, and does DVI, while the HD 3650 ($100) maxes out the trio at 800MHz, with 512MB of RAM as well and the RV635 core to back it up. You might not be thrashing around in Crysis, but HD video and perhaps some last-gen shooters should be totally within your grasp whenever AMD gets these to market.

The whole point of DisplayPort is that there is no licensing fees nor royalties, as there was with HDMI and DVI. (read the wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DisplayPort)
The question here is, are we ready to start buying new displays with this feature?

How difficult is it for manufacturers to put a DVI port instead of a VGA port on cards these days? It blows my mind that "low end" means VGA. I just tried to buy an off the shelf PC and was amazed at how many computers have a single VGA port, even if they have a dedicated graphics card.
Steve @ Dec 26th 2007 10:32AM
I guess what I meant to say was "I hope that these cards get picked up by the major PC manufacturers and incorporated into machines". It is such a waste to throw away a graphics card and buy a new one, when a low end card with at least a VGA and DVI would suffice.
These cards are a step in the right direction, but DVI and dual DVI/VGA cards have been around forever and you still can't find a cheap PC with DVI as a bare minimum.
TheCow5 @ Dec 26th 2007 10:38AM
well as its looking the prices for video cards will fall as long as
it has DisplayPort and not an HDMI or DVI port.
Has anyone see any DisplayPort to HDMI cable, if you can find one let
me know as I am sold.
are there plans for TV's to come with DisplayPorts(UDI) and if so whould they be cheeper if there had DisplayPort instead of HDMI?
Electromodo @ Dec 26th 2007 11:01AM
Video signal of DisplayPort is not compatible with DVI/HDMI. Still, the DisplayPort will allow the pass-through of DVI-HDMI signal, which will benefit you only if the monitor accepts has a combined DisplayPort plug that accepts DVI-HDMI too, which I think is highly unlikely.

Guys, I am really puzzled. A quick look at Google and price grabber sites did not reveal any monitors with DisplayPort input, except for one or two.
Wikipedia says DisplayPort is not compatible with DVI and HDMI.
Furthermore, as far as I know most of monitors and TVs are coming with DVI or HDMI ports, and HDMI is compatible with DVI.
What is the reason to buy DisplayPort cards if all equipment comes with HDMI/DVI? Or do I miss something?
L.Rawlins @ Dec 26th 2007 11:17AM
We wouldn't need DisplayPort if the computer manufacturers would let VGA rest in peace already.
DVI/HDMI = Vanilla Digital/DRM Digital
What could be simpler in a world fast abandoning analog transmission altogether?
wickedpheonix @ Dec 26th 2007 9:21PM
That 3470 looks like a good deal to start adding additional monitors to my setup / for a cheap media center PC. Better deal that nVidia right now in the low-end and that's what AMD is aiming for.
helloUser @ Dec 26th 2007 12:29PM
Hopefully these will be compatible with Mac Pros. Im getting tired of apple offering almost nothing in terms of graphics cards.
freakmarket @ Dec 26th 2007 1:08PM
What difference does it make? There is SO little software available for the macs that would take advantage of different graphics cards.
helloUser @ Dec 27th 2007 9:58AM
freakmarket: i take it youre not a mac user, thats ok, let me explain some things for you.
1) no, there is lots of software available for mac, anything a PC can do, a mac can also do
2) not a whole lot of software requires a great graphics card, unless your doing 3D work, so your complaint is completely useless
3) a lot of us who are on mac pros can now take advantage of gaming, sort of, which is why apple is a major failure in this department. NO, i am NOT talking about gaming on OS X (lol, you actually think people game on OS X? who does that?) I boot into windows, and then play games on my geforce 7300 GT setup, in fact, i got two of these cards bridged in SLI with hacked drivers. Runs most games reasonably well, but if i try and do something like doom 3 for example, at maximum detail and 2X FSAA or more, i get lag.
Stop spreading ignorance to the public, if you want to state crap opinions because (as it looks like it) you have some kind of personal vendetta against the mac, at least state that in your public opinions. Thanks for coming out.

wow these card are really cheap, but the video inputs seems sooooo restrictive, I guess I'll hold off until the 9800 come out (nvidia's 9800)
Bullitt @ Dec 26th 2007 2:18PM
Do you mean AMD or ATI? AMD doesn't make graphics cards(or so I'm told).
Will @ Dec 26th 2007 7:47PM
Dude, go back to your Steve McQueen movies. Seriously.
Bullitt @ Dec 26th 2007 9:15PM
Sticking to the subject, aren't we?
Gamer90 @ Dec 26th 2007 3:42PM
AMD owns ATI.
iofthestorm @ Dec 26th 2007 10:26PM
I'm surprised no one's made an analogy to the Russel Peters 34.50 joke.
TheCow5 @ Dec 26th 2007 11:16PM
ok did some googling and found this pit of info.
one content protection for another, that can't be any good
- DisplayPort backers include ATI, nVidia, Dell, Genesis, Hewlett-Packard, Tyco, Molex, and Philips.
- UDI backers including Apple, Intel, and Samsung.
- Future HD applications using resolutions up to 4096x2160 will need capacity far beyond what DVI can deliver.
- Whilst HDMI and DVI are related, DisplayPort is incompatible with either of them, and even employs its own content protection system (DPCP - Display Port Content Protection)
kojo87 @ Dec 27th 2007 8:55PM
nifty. these would be great for a new media-focused PC. but the HD 3870 is cheap enough that you might as well get one of those. i did and i love it!
