Do you see many blog sites running rumors based on mock-ups of a Sony product or Samsungs?

Heck you will see comments here from people that are so in Apple's back pocket that they are happy to buy one even if it's fake!

Sites like this would be stupid not to tap into that brand of foolishness even if it annoys the heck out of most of the readership.

Sure, it has some minor annoyances (e.g., still waiting for cut/copy/paste, and for voice-activated dialing, but those are a long way from 'half-assed'). But **by far**, it is one of the finest V1 electronic products I have consumed (relative to what was promised). The fact that it did everything that it promised -- granted, not much more -- and did so in a fairly simple, intuitive, user-friendly way is a rarity in consumer electronics these days.

As to the keyboard, that is a purely personal p.o.v. Speaking for myself, I have found it infinitely easier to use the iPhone to enter text than my Blackberry (which I do not use any more).

If the iPhone is your example of a 'half-assed' Apple product, all I can say is, I wish the consumer electronics world would offer me larger menu of such half-assed products. The practice of ‘price skimming’ involves charging a relatively high price for a short time where a new, innovative, or much-improved product is launched onto a market.

The objective with skimming is to “skim” off customers who are willing to pay more to have the product sooner; prices are lowered later when demand from the “early adopters” falls.

The success of a price-skimming strategy is largely dependent on the inelasticity of demand for the product either by the market as a whole, or by certain market segments.

With that being said, normally the Skimming lasts an extended period of time generating great profits and in turn creating a black market for this good i.e.: Iphone that consumers want to own, but cant find because the general public has consumed it. Therefore, since the product didn’t disappear off the shelves as apple predicted they had to lower the price to stimulate demand. EPIC FAIL. Pathetic, and to keep the customers they already had, they needed to offer a rebate. EPIC FAIL.
To continue with the Iphone let me just start the list again: lack of 3G, it's a closed device, and only Apple will be releasing software for the iPhone,

It is insane how far reaching Apple's iPod halo is. Looking past the iPod, Apple hasn't been all that successful this past year. Both the iPhone and AppleTV have failed to meet expectations. And with regards to Apple computers, market share rose only 0.3% worldwide in 2007.

Well the iPhone was rated as one of the biggest disappointments of 2007 by several reviewers (see, e.g., PC Magazine). Look past the lovely screen, and there are plenty of warts. Call quality is iffy (worse than other phone on the AT&T network, according to several reviews), the virtual keyboard is a challenge, and the device doesn't support 3G wireless networks, voice dialing, or stereo Bluetooth headsets. The camera is only 2 megapixel, lacks autofocus, and doesn't have flash. It was hyped up to be THE mobile Internet device, yet it doesn't support flash and uses Edge (unless you happen to be in a wifi hotspot...but they are not as easy to come by in public as we would like to believe and most of those are not free). The phone is also closed to 3rd party applications. Email management lags behind other smartphones, particularly the Blackberry. Battery life is not very good and then there is the whole issue of having to go through Apple when something does happen to it. The iPhone's lead in interface technology has already shrunk as newer phones released in 2008 have already closed the gap.

As you mentioned, AppleTV was a big flop. AppleTV exists to stream iTunes content onto HD TVs, but would you like to explain to me how much HD content is available on iTunes. . . mmmhmm. . . AppleTV also doesn't play DVDs, let alone play video games (see, e.g., Xbox 360 and Playstation 3). Nor is it a DVR. You can't plug your iPod into it or connect directly to the iTunes store, though the hardware should let you do both (and don't bother using AppleTV without iTunes). . . It supports only two video formats, MPEG-4 and H.264, freezing out other media formats. File size is limited to 4GB. Data transfer is slow. Stock price does matter. Lower priced stocks have a lower perception of risk. Also, the cost to buy in is more manageable. Yes, Apple uses a lot of technology that existed previously, and yes, Apple simply repackages the technology in a way that is simpler and easier to use, and yes, Apple gets credit for bringing that technology to the masses. You just wish you had thought of doing it first. Hey so do I, I mean I'd enjoy being worth $20 billion. But you have issues with people giving Apple credit for doing that, including Engadget, "adoring press" and "enthralled iFans". Really? If Apple shouldn't get credit for bringing USB to the masses, then who should? If Apple shouldn't get credit for bringing an entirely new UI and brand new functionality to the mobile phone, then who should?

Jobs himself has said that what he does is find what he thinks is a problem, and he sets out to fix it. Usually that involves changing how it works or how you use it, it doesn't mean he creates brand new technology from nothing necessarily. There's no big secret here, everybody knows that's what he does. He doesn't invent PCs, he makes PCs that are easy to use and are aesthetically pleasing. He doesn't invent mobile phones, he makes mobile phones that are easy to use and are aesthetically pleasing. Are you seeing the trend here?

Reading about rumours is what we do as Apple fans due to their policy of never revealing anything until it's launched. I wish it was different and we could actually plan and budget for the new devices ahead of time. Guess that's what makes these devices appealing in a way. We can only dream about them until they're finally released and we know what they really are.

I would be an early adopter of an Apple touch screen laptop. I already own a Tablet PC and unfortunately I have to run Vista on it. It's the worst OS I ever ran (well, maybe second when compared to Windows ME). I only use the tablet as a ebook reader, so I don't suffer too much with Vista crap. Come on Apple!!!! Given that, there are some rather reliable sources: namely, EVERY SINGLE SOURCE AT APPLE THAT LEAKS THESE THINGAMAJIGS.
