TUAW had an article yesterday (http://www.tuaw.com/2007/12/28/british-iphone-users-love-their-data/) about UK iPhone users, and the statistics suggest most iPhone users are not people who need GPS, but rather ordinary people who have never used a smartphone before. Apple fanboys get defensive and make ad hominem attacks, but let's just look at the facts. The reason people buy the iPhone is because it is a hyped up fashion phone (i.e., it looks cool), maybe for the built in iPod, but not because of its great phone features. This is true, because there are far too many phones out there that leave the iPhone in the dust in terms of features (AT&T Tilt, RIM Blackberry Curve, Nokia N95/N95 8GB, LG Voyager, etc.), so if someone was looking for a phone with lots of features they would choose something else. You know what, it is okay to buy a phone as a fashion phone, as long as you admit it. For example, how many people bought the RAZR because it looked cool and it was thin? Many admitted that the a free Nokia phone performed better.

You are right, not everybody needs GPS, just like not everybody needs leather seats in an expensive luxury car. But if my car is an expensive luxury car and its competitors offer leather standard, I would be upset if it didn't have it. I guess not everybody needs a long lasting battery that they can replace, 3G speeds, a decent camera (low resolution, no autofocus, no flash), flash compatibility, headphone jack that is compatible with all headphones, quick email alerts, the ability to open various document formats, voice dailing, stereo bluetooth, or the ablity to use 3rd party application either. How many absent features does it take for the phone to not be a "great buy." It doesn't even have good call quality, which should be any phone's greatest priority.

Yes, the browser is okay, I wouldn't call it great. But then again it doesn't even support flash. Pretty pathetic for an Internet phone, which will run on Edge most of the time in public. What is more, typing the URL with the touchscreen QWERTY keyboard is unnecessarily challenging. True, the UI is easy to use, but there are many phones before the iPhone, such as the LG Prada, and phones after the iPhone, such as the N95 and the Voyager that are also easy to use. So this in itself is insufficient to make it a great phone. Once again, visual voicemail is "neat," but not enough to overcome the phone's other shortcoming.

So why do people buy the iPhone??? Well, you are right, there is more than one type of consumer. My original post, if anything, supports such a premise. There are those who want a true smartphone (e.g., lawyers at law firms). For these people, the iPhone is a joke. Anyone using an iPhone for such work related purposes can't be taken seriously. First... the Google cell-based location system can work in areas where GPS cannot. For instance, where I work... I have plenty of sky visible from my office, but not a single GPS device can pick up for some reason (we've tried several... it's one of the things we do). However, the Google cell location service finds me pretty well.

And I don't see your point about quick email alerts. I often hear the "ding" of an incoming email seconds before it shows up in Outlook connected to an Exchange server at work. Much faster than any other phone I've ever used to get email.

Second... I get the hint that Nicholas Kim was probably making a general thing called a "joke". Probably not aimed right at you, but maybe it should have been since you are taking it so personally.

It's funny that you mention "ad hominem" remarks, when you say things like "Apple fanboys" and "fashionistas". Why are you so defensive about the iPhone?

If you don't like it, fine, don't buy one... I like mine just fine, and it has plenty of features that I want and need. I had a Windows Mobile smartphone right before getting an iPhone, and guess what... it didn't have the 8 GB of storage that I wanted, or a maps program, or a decent web browser (although I put Opera on it and that helped), or easy typing, or a cheap data plan, or the ability to buy music from iTunes straight from the phone, or Youtube, or weather, and it didn't have GPS either (although I bought a BT GPS sensor that came with maps, at a cost of around $100 if memory serves).

Yes, getting a GPS unit to lock onto satellite can get annoying if you are in, for example, San Francisco. You also make a good point that Google's service is FREE, can't complain about that. From reading the following Engadget blog, however, it seems that many people are having trouble getting it to work or work well (http://www.engadget.com/2007/11/29/google-unveils-gps-less-handset-locator-technology/). In addition, its lack of accuracy really limits is usefulness. Of course, you don't have to take my word for it, that was the majority opinion in the Engadget blog.

I am not sure what reviews you have read saying that the LG Voyager is all flash and no substance. I apologize, I didn't know your sense of worth was so closely tied with Apple's brand image. I didn't mean to hurt your feelings. I thought a tech blog was an appropriate place for a marketplace of ideas regarding various subjects. You make reasonable points. As I mentioned above, it is entirely possible for one to be satisfied with their iPhone even with its lack of features and shortcomings, even though many aren't. I think if I were to get a touch screen phone, I may wait and see what phones utilizing Nokia's S60 technology have to offer. As for ad hominem attacks, whether you enjoy my replies or not, they are factually (for example, no GPS on iPhone is a fact) and I do not attack the character of the person I am replying to. I do not call people Apple fanboys or fashionistas without adding any content to my reply. Personally, i think people are complaining without doing the research. Did it ever occur to you that the reason Steve chose to not use 3G technology was because of power issues? I can understand that, as I have a 3G sprint phone, and after using the high speed connection for a little while the battery drains super quickly.

Lets see what other complaints you have. Ah yes, the issue of GPS. Power constraints and slow lock on speeds are the number one reasons that i can think of.

Finally, if you look back at your own extraordinarily long comment above, (yes i'm trying to beat that can you tell?) half of those complaints can be fixed (and probably will be fixed) with a simple FIRMWARE/ SOFTWARE UPGRADE. Seriously. That's like saying, well why didn't this company expect their product to be dunked underwater, lit on fire and shot with a shotgun and work perfectly? They couldn't have possibly known all of what the users wanted.

I hope this clears up some of the hatership that has been going on here.

We are two different people. (1) You put great value to your thread ranking, while I pay no attention to it. Those voting in this thread in particular are disproportionately Apple fanboys, which of course are going to skew the thread rankings. Instead of ranking threads due to content, those who say anything good about Apple get a +, while those who say something negative get a -. I've accomplished enough in my life to have my self esteem tied to how highly ranked my posts are. (2) You have nothing productive to say, while I do. (3) You are biased while I am not. I do my research and buy the best products, I don't care about brand name. If iPhone fixed its shortcomings, I'd consider purchasing it. It's called correspondence and common courtesy. If people take the time to reply to me, I take the time to reply to them. Do you not reply to people in your daily interactions?

In my post I gave a few reasons why the iPhone is good (for example, fashion phone with a nice voicemail feature) and bad (for example, poor call quality). That is more balanced than any of the other posts above that only mention what is good about it. So if my views are one-sided, what do you call the replies to my views? As for the LG Voyager, that received CNET's Editor's award and won CNET's prizefight against the iPhone. And many other reviewers agree. So my opinion about the phone is not even needed.

Actually, the Voyager does have a touchscreen. What is more, the iPhone's accelerometer and sensor that turns off the screen are merely means to an end and who says those are the best means? Not every phone needs to have an accelerometer and a sensor that turns off the screen to be a good phone. Technology has different ways of accomplishing the same thing. To me, the end is more important than the means. So if I can use the touchscreen without activating with my face while talking on the phone, I could careless how they do it as long as it works.

Actually, before the iPhone was even released, people looked at the facts and gave critical reviews as a result. For example, 28 Reasons Why the iPhone Sucks posted in June 2007 (http://www.who-sucks.com/tech/15-reasons-why-apples-iphone-sucks), Top 5 reasons the iPhone Sucks posted January 2007 (http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/cellphones/top-five-reasons-why-the-iphone-sucks-228100.php), etc. Get on Google and you can find literally hundreds of thousands dated around the time the iPhone was first released. It doesn't take everybody months to let the hype die down and see the light.

You are absolutely right. Some shortcomings are far too basic. No mp3 ringtone on a music player? No copy/paste? Hmmm.

I love how you call Steve Jobs by his first name, very personal. Anyways, you are really bending over backwards to give Steve Jobs the benefit of the doubt. (1) The iPhone will have 3G in Europe. Does Apple all of a sudden not care about battery life in Europe? (2) Apple could have the phone come with 3G and through an option use Edge to save battery life. They could even have Edge as the default network if they are really that concerned. (3) While it does drain more batteries, it isn't so extreme as to cripple 3G use. Many smartphones have 3G and their users do use it. So yes, it occurred to me, because I think of both sides of the argument. Here, it just happens to be untrue.

You list GPS technology's shortcomings as reasons Steve Jobs did not include it with the iPhone, yet Google Maps is even worse as it is merely a map. Not even comparable. So now, you can "upgrade" to Google's cell-based navigation system, once again, not a true substitute. Not to mention I have a Garmin Nuvi GPS and getting a lock is not bad at all, and certainly not bad enough to completely delete its usability. And the GPS technology is not only more than good enough for me, but good enough for the military (who invented it) and millions of people who use it in the cars, hand held units, and, of course, cellphones.

You can see that i wrote that response at 1:30 at night. Brain half dead. I think that you have some very good points. My whole point was not that YOU are wrong in your opinions, but that there seem to be a whole lot of people who just trash the iPhone and Apple for everything they do.

Wow, really? Because i know that when that sdk comes out in February, tons of people will make apps that solve many of the (small) problems that the iPhone has. Copy/Paste? Easily done, i've seen it happen with homebrew apps on other mediums.

Also, look at the firmware version number. 1.1.3!!!!
This isn't even a 1.2 or a 2.0. i mean come on! No other company makes huge huge upgrades to their product with any less than a 2nd decimal increase.

And by the way, the power consumption was not just speculation from me, but was directly from the mouth of Mr. Jobs (you happy?) himself. If you look back on the reports of Engadget, at a certain press conference during the Q&A portion, that was his answer to a person who asked "Why no 3G?"

Finally, you are comparing a Garmen to a phone? The Garmen is 1st and foremost a GPS device. it doesn't have to worry about being a phone. Secondly, the Garmen cannot update the maps (and business locations) by itself, whereas Google Maps can because it is constantly connected to the web.

Okay, and finally we come to the voyager's design. The first thing that i think of when i look at the voyager is that it must be a cheap Chinese knockoff of the iPhone. The design obviously comes from the iPhone, down to the bottom buttons. Also, if you read the comment below the first long comment, i meant a screen that wasn't made of flimsy plastic. Not to mention that that specific type of screen is impossible to use with anything that isn't a stylus. Also, the voyager doesn't even attempt to include an input correction software.

The accusation that Apple tried to milk ringtones is silly when you look at their original ringtone offering compared to that available on other phones and other carriers (more expensive, sometimes time-limited). There will always be people pissed that that a device doesn't have X or Y feature. Unless Apple decides to go the direction of "we are going to implement every feature that has even been or ever will be in a cell phone", people won't be fully satisfied. So just because a device is missing a feature or two it doesn't necessarily make it less useful to you if it's missing features you don't ever use.

This will continue to be a nagging "problem" for the iPhone with people having this perceived notion it should be fully loaded with every hardware feature available. Since the iPhone is slim, already heavy due to the large glass screen and doesn't have a replaceable battery, at this point in time it can't be stuffed with hardware without sacrificing talk time, weight or size.

So it won't be suitable for everyone, but probably pleases 90% of those that use it with the features it has. Software features are missing, but I'm guessing that's just a lack of programming time. I do feel bad for iPhone users if minor firmware updates really just a sales trick to add only a few features at a time to continually boost sales. The things I would love to see implemented on the iPhone are:
1. Move the send button when writing texts - it is too close to the "keyboard" and I've already sent incomplete texts a few times by hitting it by mistake.
2. Bluetooth should allow data connections - would be great for traffic updates for TomTom satnavs. Also, should allow external devices to read and send SMS.
3. MMS - I mean come on. Why was this left out? It would be so easy to implement.
4. A setting to bring to the the front page of each application instead of starting where you left off each time.
5. Fix the alarm bug I experienced where I had a calendar reminder was set just before and alarm was due to go off. As a result, the phone sat there waiting for me to aknowledge the reminder and didn't sound the alarm until I did so. Luck for me I only slept in by 30mins and wasn't late for work!!! (I this a known bug?)

For point #6, its most likely the fact that if Apple added Flash to the iPhone, Apple would have to play license fees to Adobe.

There's really nothing to do with plugin fees, but to application control. Flash would enable appls that would be more like native than web, which freaks Stevie out (his therapist should explain why's that very well...)

Also, I find the price graph on the stocks page not much more than interesting eye-candy; some additional financial info (e.g., P/E ratios, some quick-and-dirty big picture numbers such as revenues, net income and other basic financials) would be far more useful for most people.
