DSM-330 DivX Connected HD Media Player gets unboxed
We already saw this thing in the wild way back when it was known as the DivX GejBox, but now the real deal has finally been acquired and unboxed. The DSM-330 DivX Connected HD Media Player has at long last made its way into a lucky soul's hands, and as if that weren't enough, it was even photographed right beside a beta box for good measure. k3nt @ Dec 31st 2007 4:37AM
thats uber cool
Broc @ Dec 31st 2007 4:55AM
what exactly does it do? I'm guessing it allows you to watch movies in xvid format on your tv in HD. Am I right?
BoZs13 @ Dec 31st 2007 5:01AM
sadly not xvid
that old divx format we used to use lol
Ketan @ Dec 31st 2007 5:50AM
So then what makes this better than an XBox 360 since it costs about the same? The 360 plays Xvid files with the new dashboard update.
rento @ Dec 31st 2007 7:47AM
I have one of those. It DOES play xvid format. It is pretty cool, what surprises me is the lack of any other audio support apart from MP3 and no internet radio...
KEROLiUKAS @ Dec 31st 2007 8:52AM
Internet radio is coming, as a plugin..Let's hope pretty soon...And you'll have to bug DivX a bit more for other audio support..
p.s. it does play divx/xvid & wmv by default with no hacks.
With a hack ( http://connunity.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10 )x264, matroska, mpeg1/2...
KEROLiUKAS @ Dec 31st 2007 8:16AM
Ahhhh..my nice watermark...
Ryan @ Dec 31st 2007 8:16AM
Will it play .mkv files? If so then this thing is better than the 360 or PS3. I still use my Xbox with XBMC over the 360 because I'm not moving all my media files to Windows. I use linux to serve it all up to XBMC for years now.
KEROLiUKAS @ Dec 31st 2007 8:17AM
There is a hack that can get mkv files to work, it works fine for me.
KEROLiUKAS @ Dec 31st 2007 8:16AM
And now my bandwidth is screwed...
keroliukas @ Dec 31st 2007 8:30AM
Backup, view away...
Nicky Smith @ Dec 31st 2007 9:32AM
Does this have any serious advantages over the 360? Can it play .srt subtitles with Divx/Xvid files?
KEROLiUKAS @ Dec 31st 2007 10:20AM
Yes it can play .srt subtitles with DivX/XviD. Also sweet UI, very customizable and open. JavaScript based. Browse around on the read link...
rodalpho @ Dec 31st 2007 9:52AM
The "hack" involves adding filters to the server on your desktop computer, which then transcodes to divx and streams to the box. That's the same thing that TVersity does for the X360, and it sucks. If the "hack" allowed us to add codecs to the box itself (like appletv), that would be an entirely different matter.
KEROLiUKAS @ Dec 31st 2007 10:21AM
Well unless you're rolling a Pentium II (you shouldn't even be allowed to own HD video then), transcoding doesn't really disrupt the normal working..At least for me. Yes CPU usage goes up, but doesn't stop me from my usual stuff.
OneLove @ Dec 31st 2007 10:07AM
What about subtitle support?
OneLove @ Dec 31st 2007 10:11AM
oh wait, I have a vista media center laptop. :)
Kosmonaut @ Dec 31st 2007 2:18PM
Just a quick additional info: the device is available for purchase right now in UK, France, and Germany. Hopefully available in US soon.
4honor @ Dec 31st 2007 2:29PM
Can't anyone just make a USB thumb drive sized 1080p upconvert device that is, USB port on one end, HDMI on the other (port or cable), that way I can just load the divx movies onto my thumb drive, plug it in and play on HDTV.
Basically like those upconvert dvd players with USB ports, but minus the DVD player (therefore decrease the size). I don't use DVD anymore as I can just play divx... I guess I will just have to connect my laptop to the TV for now...
4honor @ Dec 31st 2007 2:31PM
by the way, this unboxed review kinda sucked... how about pictures of the ports on the back of this device?
KEROLiUKAS @ Dec 31st 2007 3:01PM
I'll update the post soon, but anyways, ill just add old pictures that are floating on the internet, just now they'll be in one spot.
KEROLiUKAS @ Dec 31st 2007 3:10PM
Ok done, check read link again, I also have pix of it with my giant pig for size comparison (That is if you know how giant my giant pig is)
Scott R @ Jan 1st 2008 10:27PM
Two questions:
1) Can this stream VOB files?
2) According to the DivX site, this is only available in the UK. Why? And when, if ever, is it expected to be available in the US?
KEROLiUKAS @ Jan 2nd 2008 12:30AM
1. No, not unless you wrap it into a Matroska container and use the transcoding hack
2. Not only UK, a bunch of other European countries too. Why? I don't know, ask DivX. I believe it is expected in the US, because DivX has mentioned that, but no release date.
