The new P-170 FX laptop lineup from
Gateway might look a bit bulky, but there's quite a bit of tech under the hood. At the "low-end," the P-170 FX1 runs a Core 2 Duo T7250 processor, 17-inch 1440 x 900 screen, 3GB of RAM, 250GB HDD, multi-format DVD burner, 5-in-1 media reader, GeForce 8800M GTS graphics with 512MB of RAM, 802.11n WiFi and a 9 cell battery. For $1,600 it's not a bad package, but if you've got a few grand in pocket, you might want to look into the $3,000 P-170FX MAX, which bumps everything up a notch. There's a X7900 Core 2 Extreme processor, 1920 x 1200 screen, 400GB 7200RPM SATA HDD and a HD DVD disc drive. The P-170 FX2 pretty much splits the difference at $2000. The laptops should be available soon on Gateway's online store.

Wow, 1440x900? My 15" Macbook Pro has the same resolution, and is much better looking. Not to mention the fact that the track pad is centered.

At least this thing has class! lol

and it's responses like this that give Mac owners a bad name and a poor reputation.
That's wonderful that your macbook has the same resolution...it doesn't have the same internal specs though, and it is meant for mainstream usage. This is a 17" notebook that is typically targeted as more of a desktop replacement, or for gaming.
With regard to the touchpad being centered, if you'd pay a little bit of attention you'd notice that with the 17" screen there is also a full numeric keypad to the right. If the trackpad were centered to the full laptop it would not be in a convenient place while you're doing 98% of your typing.
Try pretending for a second that just because someone doesn't do design work at Apple, that doesn't mean their ideas are wrong.

I think I like the track pad centered with the space bar.

Apparently, some Mac fanboy's can't read. 1440x900 is the low end resolution it supports for those budget minded people. Since people who buy Macs are used to spending twice as much for a computer as they should, they would likely go for the 1920x1200 resolution monitor that is available for this. And even though it may not be as "pretty" as a Macbook it will have way, way more under the hood, and it'll probably still cost less. Someone already beat me to the laughable comment of the touch pad not being centered so I'll leave it at that.

Man, I got my NX860XL for like $100 more and all but the resolution on the P-170 FX1 blow mine away and mine was bought only 6 months ago.
Ash1138 @ Jan 7th 2008 7:03PM
I did as well, but I wouldn't say the FX1 blows mine away. Mine's equipped with Core 2 Duo T7200, 2GBRAM, 1920x1200 res monitor, GeForce 7900, 100GB 7200RPM HDD (replaced with 200GB 7200RPM HDD), integrated Wireless-N, all for around the $1600 range. Even today, those specs at that price are a steal so don't shed too many tears. We don't even know when these new laptops are coming out.
Darrol @ Jan 7th 2008 7:10PM
I guess you are right. Mine shares the same specs as yours except I have 150 gb HDD and if I remember correctly, it is 5400 RPM.

Nice, I'll probably get it when the Geforce 9 series get available for notebooks. I can only hope the GF9xxx won't support some new DX.
