This is a 17" notebook that is typically targeted as more of a desktop replacement, or for gaming.

With regard to the touchpad being centered, if you'd pay a little bit of attention you'd notice that with the 17" screen there is also a full numeric keypad to the right. If the trackpad were centered to the full laptop it would not be in a convenient place while you're doing 98% of your typing.

Try pretending for a second that just because someone doesn't do design work at Apple, that doesn't mean their ideas are wrong.

Aaron

Comments on Gateway's new P-170 FX series of 17-inch laptops

I think I like the track pad centered with the space bar.

Josh

Comments on Gateway's new P-170 FX series of 17-inch laptops

Apparently, some Mac fanboy's can't read. 1440x900 is the low end resolution it supports for those budget minded people. Since people who buy Macs are used to spending twice as much for a computer as they should, they would likely go for the 1920x1200 resolution monitor that is available for this. And even though it may not be as "pretty" as a Macbook it will have way, way more under the hood, and it'll probably still cost less. Someone already beat me to the laughable comment of the touch pad not being centered so I'll leave it at that.

Ash1138

Comments on Gateway's new P-170 FX series of 17-inch laptops

Man, I got my NX860XL for like $100 more and all but the resolution on the P-170 FX1 blow mine away and mine was bought only 6 months ago.

Darrol

Comments on Gateway's new P-170 FX series of 17-inch laptops

I did as well, but I wouldn't say the FX1 blows mine away. Mine's equipped with Core 2 Duo T7200, 2GBRAM, 1920x1200 res monitor, GeForce 7900, 100GB 7200RPM HDD (replaced with 200GB 7200RPM HDD), integrated Wireless-N, all for around the $1600 range. Even today, those specs at that price are a steal so don't shed too many tears. We don't even know when these new laptops are coming out.

Ash1138

Comments on Gateway's new P-170 FX series of 17-inch laptops

I guess you are right.
