Belkin's Podcast Studio, the self-contained podcast producer
Apparently the Belkin folks are rolling out a little something for the podcasting community this CES season. The company's Podcast Studio is a self-contained, iPod-interfacing podcast production device... and not much else. The unit features dual XLR and 1/4" inputs, a built-in microphone up top, an embedded speaker, and the styling of some 1950's-space-opera transmogrifier. You can slot your iPod in the top and record directly to the player, thus eliminating the need for a computer nearby -- until you need to get it online, of course. The only thing it's missing is your smarmy, high-falutin' opinions about avant noise-rock.

Any article with a Calvin and Hobbes reference deserves a little more attention than the rest in my mind... it helps if the gadget is good too.

I went to work at a local radio station for work experience last year and they used these big, bulky recorders that cost well over £600 each. This seems so much better due to the size of it.
Doubt it works with the iPod Touch yet, though :(
Would be awesome if it did...

Cool, but very different from the concept: http://www.macworld.com/article/54743/2007/01/tunestudio.html

My bad, looks like my link is for the TuneStudio... supposed to arrive last summer at $179, still not out (but coming soon for $399).

...for podcasters who don't own computers?
Michael @ Mar 21st 2008 9:31PM
all podcasters have computers this will elliminate noise pollution created by recording directly into your computers sound card, there is alot going on in a computer and even if you have very well insulated wires your still going to get electronic interference even when you stop speaking and pull out your mic the computer will still record a very distinct humming noise this is truely a very useful gadget
umm....hello??? @ Jan 8th 2008 1:23PM
if they make this compatible with the iPod touch, it'd already have wifi internet access and finally eliminate the need for a computer for podcasters.

Could be cool. Depending on the specs, might even be handy for recording artists on-the-go who just want to grab something simple or environmental sounds.
Potentially, if it worked well enough, a few radio reporters would find it helpful to. Weeee NPR!
