A electric/gas hybrid would have increased the price many fold and an electric car, while feasible in the highly developed areas, would be worthless in the many parts of india (and eventually china, where they hope to get a pretty decent penetration) where the grid is *much* less reliable.

And then there is always the fact that currently both hybrid and electric cars are worse for the environment. Do you happen to know what they make batteries out of? Do you know what it takes to mine the heavy metals used in the batteries, and then to refine said metal and manufacture the batteries How about the likelyhood those batteries will be disposed of properly (where that doesn't even happen in the US in any regularity)? Carbon emissions suck, but there are many worse forms of pollution and heavy metal pollution is pretty close to the top of that list. When carbon nanotube battcaps are commercially feasible I will change my opinion, but until then straight fuel burning is the lesser of the evils (especially as zero emissions fuel combustion engines are in production)

josh

Comments on Tata Motors' $2,500 NANO automobile gets official

Dude "that new French air powered car" is also licensed by tata!

Check out... http://www.tata.com/tata_motors/media/20070206.htm

broli

Comments on Tata Motors' $2,500 NANO automobile gets official

They are.
ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization) and TATA are in process of manufacturing an electric car.

x3qt0r

Comments on Tata Motors' $2,500 NANO automobile gets official

No doubt this will be a big hit with 1/6th the world's population........will be interesting to see what kind of an impact this will have on the world economy.

bhavananda nadimpally

Comments on Tata Motors' $2,500 NANO automobile gets official

hmmm, laptop, car, laptop, car....

Sukhminder

Comments on Tata Motors' $2,500 NANO automobile gets official

We're doomed. It may appeal in Canada/USA as well, where average cars do only 27.5-30 US MPG. The majority of the time spent in these cars (seemingly 95%) are for commuting or bags of groceries. 54 US MPG is a huge step forward. The Mercedes Benz Smart cars (which are likely even smaller than this NANO) sell quite well in Canada, however they're expensive at $18,000, are less fuel economical, and have less trunk space.

54 US MPG is only marginally better than a 1996-2003 Volkswagen Golf and Jetta TDI 5spd (diesel), which easily yields ~50 US MPG on the highway. Some even reported 55 US MPG, with modifications that churn out over 170 horsepower and over 250 torque. 45 US MPG if driven more in city or driven hard. Drop that TDI engine into a NANO and the result should be amazing, in terms of fuel economy and performance.

Drop a bio-diesel compatible motor in a NANO and it'll be even more impressive, but who can argue with $2,500? Minimal car payments and low insurance! Bring it to Canada/USA!

malone

Comments on Tata Motors' $2,500 NANO automobile gets official

A post about Tatas and that Veronica chick is no where to be found?

sab6300

Comments on Tata Motors' $2,500 NANO automobile gets official

For What it's Worth....
One Lakh is equal to 100,000 Indian rupees (INR).
There are ~40 INRs per $1 USD, hence the "$2,500 '1-Lakh' car"

Bender Bending Rodriguez

Comments on Tata Motors' $2,500 NANO automobile gets official

Does anyone else look at this and see the Toyota Prius' front end?

phil

Comments on Tata Motors' $2,500 NANO automobile gets official

yeah!
