iPhone v1.1.3 causing major issues with SMS message order?
Apparently, a lot of iPhone users are experiencing issues related to out of order SMS conversations. [Thanks Mark and Sean]
What's the deal, have you seen this? Shout it out in comments.
This post intentionally out of order.
A lot of people were pretty damned stoked about the SMS improvements Apple unleashed upon iPhone owners yesterday with firmware v1.1.3, but it's not all turning up roses.

I haven't noticed this with my 1.1.3
Andrew Stone @ Jan 16th 2008 5:35PM
I haven't noticed this, but i have noticed it takes LONGER to send messages. Expected, with multiple recipients... but when sending to one person, why should the 1.1.3 update take longer?
Anybody else have this issue?
a ham sandwich @ Jan 16th 2008 6:10PM

runmonkey @ Jan 17th 2008 7:55AM
same is happening to me, this SUCKS, very annoying...please fix Apple.
Danny @ Jan 16th 2008 5:31PM
I've been having that problem. I've been wondering what was up
nerdtalker @ Jan 16th 2008 7:12PM
It just works?
Anthony @ Jan 16th 2008 5:32PM
I've noticed this, if you're sending and receiving messages from a user within 10-20 seconds it will occasionally flip the order showing that yours was sent after their reply.
So...
Me 5:30:10
Them 5:30:50
Them 5:31:05
Me 5:31:00
Never had that happen before 1.1.3.

i have a problem with my touch not being able to connect to wi-fi. my laptop works just fine on the same network. it says it is connected to wifi but not working. this started when i updated
Jerod @ Jan 16th 2008 5:52PM
Restart or reset your router
ScotteusMaximus @ Jan 16th 2008 6:36PM
I had this problem for the first time the other day. For some reason the DNS settings in the phone got screwed up. Change the IP address for the DNS settings to match the IP address of your router.
Andy @ Jan 16th 2008 6:41PM
also under settings on the touch you can go to reset (in the general tab) and reset network settings
Paul @ Jan 16th 2008 5:36PM
I have just another problem!
Since yesterday my iPhone cut my Sms-history in pieces...
Now i have one "Folder" with 2 Sms from my girlfriend, all the other SMS from her are in a different conversation with her Mobilenumber, but not her name!
Really strange bug :(
james @ Jan 16th 2008 5:37PM
Oh great, they pushed out this update just for MacWorld.
daschupa @ Jan 16th 2008 10:20PM
That's okay, I'm sure a patch will be released. It will cost 20 bucks.
comrade @ Jan 16th 2008 5:38PM
I don't think order of delivery of messages is guaranteed in sms, is it?
However, if it's getting the timestamps out of order too then that's a problem...
Martin @ Jan 16th 2008 5:38PM
Yea just about every conversation is jumbled up on mine, it is ok when they first arrive but when I go back and look later they are messed up
peshue @ Jan 16th 2008 5:39PM
But, but, but, apple products are perfect right...
John @ Jan 16th 2008 6:25PM
I think wot your looking for is: "It just works"
JosephMohmed @ Jan 16th 2008 6:37PM
Never heard a single person say an Apple product is perfect and doesn't have any problems, especially not the iPhone.
josh @ Jan 16th 2008 8:45PM
"Never heard a single person say an Apple product is perfect and doesn't have any problems, especially not the iPhone."
Oh come on, you have never heard that? Have you read the average apple comment threads (especially those related to the iPhone)? Cracks about it being the Jesus phone stemmed from the over the top rhetoric that essentially made it sound like the messiah. Certain individuals in the apple community have a distorted view of reality rivaled only by certain individuals in the Linux/FOSS community.
That said, there are plenty of reality conscious apple fans that will cop to the fact that v.1 apple products generally have a decent share of flaws (would be Air owners get that apple care plan) and that Apple's QA department apparently takes long lunch breaks.

@Josh
Windows has just as many zealots as any other OS. Every popular product has a percentage of fanboys. Singling out one group just makes you look like a fanboy from the other group.
Oscar @ Jan 16th 2008 5:39PM
It's been happening to me. Thought I was going loco.
Mike Morris @ Jan 16th 2008 5:39PM
My recommendation to anyone having wonky SMS issues after the update to 1.1.3 is to delete all of the conversations from the SMS list and start fresh.
Anyone willing to give this a go and report the results?
Jerod @ Jan 16th 2008 5:52PM
I activated my iPhone for the first time yesterday and I have not had any trouble with SMS. I think you idea is valid.
Chuke @ Jan 16th 2008 8:35PM
I can confirm this - I deleted all conversations, and have not had this issue (yet).
Granted I am not txt msging all day, but had a few to delete. Seems to be valid.
Todd @ Jan 26th 2008 11:32AM
i tried this...still having the same SMS order Problems
Kenny B. @ Jan 16th 2008 5:41PM
I noticed this problem an hour after upgrading. I sent a message, received a reply, and sent a new message. My new message I sent was grouped with my first message. Green-Green-Gray
david @ Jan 16th 2008 5:42PM
ive had it a few times...a little fudged up...
Barry @ Jan 16th 2008 5:45PM
I had it once or twice then i turned it off and powered it back on it has been good since.
Homeboy @ Jan 16th 2008 5:48PM

message fest
kastonie @ Jan 16th 2008 5:48PM
Nope havent noticed this problem at all... Probably because im not using a iphone....hahahaha i have windows mobile
COMMENT: LOWEST RANKED PWN3D TO THE MAX!!!!!
Drew @ Jan 16th 2008 6:02PM
Ohhh that's right, because your "smartphone" doesn't have threaded text standard.
Trust me, I came from a Mogul to the iPhone, and it's worlds better.
kastonie @ Jan 16th 2008 6:34PM
Actually, My smartphone has threaded text. I have the palm threaded text app installed on my tytn...
Boo ya
id prolly have an iphone but the lack of 3g is the deal killer for me....
kastonie @ Jan 16th 2008 6:36PM
oh yea... and the lack of keyboard
Drew @ Jan 16th 2008 8:17PM
I said standard... :P
I had it on my Mogul too. Windows Mobile is nice, but it's just like it's desktop counterpart. Bloated and almost unusable. you had to wait for things to load. iPhone is instantaneous. Is awesome.
The lack of 3g is not that big of a deal really. Unless you tether, in which case I could understand.
Reid @ Jan 16th 2008 11:23PM
How many have ditched Windows Mobile for the iPhone? How many have ditched the iPhone for Windows Mobile? There's your answer.
I ditched Windows Mobile for the iPhone. Actually, Windows Mobile was SO unusable that I ditched it for my cheap old Samsung flip phone. It wasn't until a month or so later that Apple cut the price on the iPhone and it finally seemed reasonable to me to pay a cancellation fee to escape the horror that is Verizon.
michael @ Jan 17th 2008 6:52AM
@reid:
I know WinMo isn't the highest on the 'pretty' UI awards, but I would hardly say it's 'that' unusable. I mean anyone who can read and has a brain can navigate around WinMo.
Personally, I'm one of the many that returned the iPhone because it just didn't do well for me. It played media real nice, but I also use my phone to do a ton of other stuff - stuff that the iPhone doesn't support, but at least WinMo does.
So there. And I know I'm not the only one. I've looked at the forums. I know.
ThePengwin @ Jan 20th 2008 6:09PM
@Drew
Who really cares if you can do it standard? you cant have custom apps without hacking on the iphone, whereas windows mobile is very happy with them, and i know for a fact Treo 750's and O2 atoms come with programs standard that all you need to do is activate. WinMo also syncs with exchange, has multiple input methods that are easily switchable (depending on the device) and has some very decent games.
Im not saying the iPhone sucks, but it isn't my cake.
Scott S. @ Jan 16th 2008 5:51PM
I have personally not had this happen to me at all. I text well over 100 texts in a day, some quite rapidly and I have not experienced this. I also delete my inbox every night, so maybe it is something that might be cleared once the inbox is cleared?
yneidlinger @ Jan 16th 2008 5:55PM
I just noticed the issue. The SMS thread is all out of order.
Zach Kaufman @ Jan 16th 2008 5:53PM
it flipped a couple at the end right before i updated but ones since the update are fine
Adam @ Jan 16th 2008 5:54PM
I haven't noticed it. My biggest complaint is the cell tower triangulation. 18 miles from where I actually am is a bit ridiculous.
Nick @ Jan 17th 2008 10:13AM
i think it just depends where you live and whatnot. the street i live on isn't even on some mapping sites (like mapquest) yet on my iPhone it can tri-angulate where i live incredibly accurately. within one house i'd say. its even shifted to the side of the street that my house is on. i was INCREDIBLY impressed by this new map feature.
Apple, and the iPhone, is not perfect, BUT they are innovative, creative and end-user minded.
adam @ Jan 17th 2008 1:22PM
maybe I just live in too small a city
Duodenum @ Jan 16th 2008 5:55PM
Screw SMS. I want iChat. I want AIM & Jabber (ICQ, Yahoo & MSN would be nice, too). I couldn't care less about SMS. If someone's not online I'll call them or send them an e-mail.
yneidlinger @ Jan 16th 2008 5:59PM
Duodenum,
Just make a springboard shortcut to meebo or jivetalk. There you have it, IM on your iphone.
