How is the unlock scene in JP? Provided they are quad-band 3G, you can use them over here if you can unlock them and put in your own SIM. I could use my phone (ATT Tilt) in JP roaming on NTT DoCoMo, but if I put my girlfriend's sim in my phone, the network/sim was locked. So going there might be hard, but coming back might work provided you could unlock the phone.

Main benefits of PHS - no interference with pacemakers etc as alot less radiation than GSM 2) Base stations cheap and lots of them 3) Old tech = low cost, 3000 yen for all you can talk and mail (to the same carrier of course).

This makes the phones really popular for lovers and students
