"And because they had once written themselves a beach, on which to dream themselves together, they decided that to celebrate they'd have another one of their rare days, and for it, they would go to a beach." - Looper, "Impossible Things"

Sounds on a January beach: The lapping rhythm of waves pushing themselves over wet sand, stretching its foamy reach before pulling back again. A woman, twenty feet away, stands up from her spread blanket and smacks the soles of her tennis shoes against each other to loosen and shake out the sand in her white canvas Keds.

It's too cold for surfers to be out, but there they are, their distant voices carried by the same wind that whistles at your ears, playing harmony to the family chatter around you. They talk about the sun setting, about packing it up and leaving soon, and about where to eat tonight. You miss it all as you listen for that satisfying whoosh of your kart, boosted by an expended mushroom, racing down the creaky corridors of Luigi's Mansion.
