I have never heard of a major problem with Denon, I don't doubt that people have had problems, but nothing is a 100%. Their bread and butter, receivers and DVD/Blu-ray players, are top notch. If you are looking for quality gear in the higher end, they are defiantly worth looking at. Their gear is solid all around. Denon products are by no means a waste of money if you are in fact serious about home theater gear. To people from the outside, they make look expensive, but then so are companies that also make higher end gear like marantz, Pioneer Elite, Onkyo Integra, Anthem, etc... But over all, with these higher end companies, you are buying for what you are getting.

I however don't know about these Sound Bars, nothing I would ever buy or recommend to friends or family. The fact is that all audio gear is overpriced and you're mostly paying for the prestige of owning an expensive brand.

Did you know that audio products have a margin of at least 400%? Any $500 pair of speakers has a store cost of less than $150, as an example. The same goes for all other audio gear including receivers.

andy

Comments on Denon's DHT-FS5 X-Space Surround bar to take on Yamaha

I will never buy into this Sound Bar stuff, I understand the idea about it, less stuff for WAF and also less confusing for the technically challenged. There just seems to be a market for this junk for these various reasons, 5.1 and now 7.1 are no easy under taking if you want to do it right.

The one difference between companies like Denon and Yamaha or Bose is quality and not completely over charging for their products. A prime example is the crappy Bose satellite system that can go upwards into the obscene price range. Compared to a simular system by companies like Energy (Take 5 system), PSB or Energy, you pay a fraction of the price for what I would consider better products (quality and parts used).

zargon

Comments on Denon's DHT-FS5 X-Space Surround bar to take on Yamaha

Andy,

I think you are operating under a misconception. While speakers offer resellers a higher than normal margin (with interconnects / cables offering the best margin), their margin is about 33-50%. So a $500 a pair speaker would cost dealers between $250-$333. That does not include shipping (speakers can be heavy). Plus, given the mirad of speakers out there, dealers add value by determining which speakers are "good fits" for a system.

As a reseller of both Denon and Yamaha (and a frequent user of the YSP solutions in the "correct" environment, these types of solutions are fantastic. I have been in the audio industry for 40 years and I am extremely well versed in profit margins of audio products. Name brand loudspeakers that sell for $500 in a store have a cost of between $250 and $300. Electronic products sold in stores have smaller profit margins than speakers, hardly ever more than 40% of the retail price and very typically smaller on DVD players. And actual selling prices on audio gear is hardly ever retail, due to the competetive pressures of the marketplace.

Regarding the direct/reflecting sound issue, is like saying that BMW is charging too much for a concept pioneered by Henry Ford. All it takes to tell the difference between a Bose product and a Yamaha or Denon soundbar is the ability to hear.

Keith

Comments on Denon's DHT-FS5 X-Space Surround bar to take on Yamaha

I'd be interested to hear the Denon.
