This release may be true. It's a no brainier that these things gotta get bigger. Perhaps Engadget just made this mockup. They'll most likely leave that there with 8GB and price a 16GB at $499. Because you are correct, they wouldn't have it cost the same as an iPod touch. Actually the iPhone is not selling all that well and is not on pace to capture 1% of the global market. They sold 2.3 millions iPhones in the 4th quarter (big holiday season) of last year, and they need to average 2.5 million per quarter (including non-holiday season quarters, naturally) for the next four quarter to grab 1%.

So... I had this crazy idea. I mean its really Out There . You see, phones are very expensive pieces of hardware with very expensive service plans. The market for cell phone providers is oligopolistic, so the large providers do their best of subsidizing the cost of phones when users sign a contract because it means that they will be paying larger dues in service plans. I know the iPhone is supposed to be the advertised price with a 2-year contract, but if people are bypassing that contract, then whats the point? They should charge an exorbitant amount of money (maybe $800?) or something for the iPhone, and then have a rebate of maybe $600 when you actually sign the 2-year contract (even though they would advertise that you MUST sign a contract).

This brings cost of entry wayy down for most users and penalizes the jailbreakers that are making Apple and AT&T's profitability job a lot harder.

I am one of those people that grinds their teeth in envy when I see a macbook or 24" iMac.

I certainly do NOT need these OVER-priced computers. I have built my XP system with triple the power and speed at the same price of a Mac Mini.
