Rumored for a few weeks now as the
N95's successor in waiting, the mighty N96 dual slider has gone all official on us at Mobile World Congress today. Though the phone it replaces is still a beast by any measure, the N96 pushes the envelope further by packing a solid 16GB of storage internally in addition to a microSD slot, something the N95 8GB lacks. The 5 megapixel autofocus camera with Carl Zeiss Tessar lens carries over, but there are now two LEDs doing flash and video light duty. The 2.8 inch QVGA display will come in handy for the integrated DVB-H mobile TV tuner, while a 3.5mm headphone jack, A2DP, and integrated stereo speakers should handle audio with aplomb. Other features include WiFi, AGPS, and morphing lights on the smaller second slide that hook the user up with game controls when it's time to relax with a little
N-Gage action. Unfortunately, the first version of the N96 (and the only version announced thus far) supports HSDPA only on the 900 and 2100MHz bands, but we imagine the strength of the spec sheet should still be enough to sell a few of these stateside when it launches in the third quarter for €550 (about $797).

Isn't it? The X1 is a high-end multimedia devide. The N96 is err... a high-end multimedia device. I mean, high-end has gone quite a big higher with the X1, so basically N96 is now just a middle-end phone, to compete with iPhone and the likes.
It almost feels sad for Nokia, such a bad timing...

Well this does have 16GB AND microSD card slot plus DVB-H and 5Mp camera. The X1 has a much higher resolution screen. My preference has always been WinMob, but I have grown to like S60 as well.
Anyway both this and the X1 are pretty sexy. This year will be so difficult for my wallet.

Let's not forget that the X1 isn't slated for release until H2 2008 (the same time as Nokia's touch UI phones). Based on Sony Ericsson's previous track record, that means it'll probably be released some time in 2009.
The N96 will be high-end for at least 6 months after release.

I think I may have to agree with you. I mean, QVGA? Come on, that is not going to cut it for a device like this! This needs to get a higher resolution in there ASAP. The screen is 2.8 inches, it can definately handle more pixels.

You should not make decisions based upon the European price. It's probably not going to be that expensive in Dollars - remember the exchange rate is terrible ;)

other way around buddy. N95 was 750$ or around 600 Euros at the time it came out. Expect this one to be the same price if not a bit more expensive.

I used to have a N95, but found the user interface awkward, the software buggy, the GPS very slow to get an initial lock, and video quality quite poor for VGA resolution. The phone had a lot of features, but several of them were poorly implemented. So, I wonder if there's any quality improvement in the N96...

I can't speak for the N96, but I can say that the N95 8gb is much improved.
Not only physically (the slide doesn't "click") but the additional RAM make moving from ap to ap very quick- nearly instantaneous.
The X1 looks good, but the N95 looks more like a traditional phone- which is what I learn towards.
5mp is quite a enough for a camera. People have generally come to the conclusion that point and click about right at 5mp.

the VGA is fine on mine, maybe your settings are wrong, its the best quality out there for mobile phones, the N96 is going to be even better with more ram and the dual LED, it beats all the phones on the market

Well I just bought an N95 8GB, they've only been out for what, a few months now? Slow down Nokia, as much as 16GB is nice, couldn't you wait a little longer and give us 20GB? Or rather, improve the camera sensor or give us a new version of S60? Just seems so sudden, maybe I'm just in denial for going on a 2 year contract with this one :(

Also, what's up with the music control? Why don't they make the game keys act as music controls as well? This is stupid...
I don't get Nokia recently. Their new phones are great spec-wise, but suffers so many design-flaws, like the stupid loudspeaker placement on my N82.

Thye N95 is an extremely buggy phone and I defy anyone to make use of the built-in GPS - it has the worst reception of any sat nav I have ever used. Hopefully this will be the N95 Nokia should have made in the first place.

No cigar... I want an international business phone and the N95 nor N96 are it. Want large screen (min. 3.2"), easy key input, full access to mail and attachments. No need for games, but that is just me. Nokia E90 isn't bad, but the front seems like an afterthought.

Well having my N95 8Gb for 39 beautifull days, I would definatelly recomend this nokia n96 to everyone. I see many comments on GPS disfunctionality but AGPS is working great for me and I just installed maps 2.0 which is FAR FAR better than the original application.
The good thing for me(and I think many n95 users worrying that their phone would be outdated) is that I don't see any reason to upgrade because DVB-H is just marketing crap I think(At least for my country-Greece), at least for a year or two! And 16+8 gigabyte of memory is too much. As much as I have tried, I can't replace my ipod for music(due to battery and ease of usage in more than 500 tracks) therefore 8Gb is enough(I currently use: 2Gb on maps,500 Mb on songs, 2 Gb on clips and about 300 on photos and apps)
And I hope that the rumors for the 950 capacity battery are not true because if they are trust me don't even bother waiting because you will get a big dissapointment only followed by frustration when the n96i with larger battery will come out.
And a final thanx to sonyericsson for the X1. P-series made nokia think harder and create great devices. I hope the X1 will force nokia to bring an S60 touch device a few months earlier to us
