AT&T's Centro unboxed to reveal green keypad -- wait, what?
Boy Genius just grabbed himself one o' them newfangled white Centros for AT&T for a good, old fashioned unboxing, and guess what? The keypad's green. Yep, we can't believe it either. Body's white, keypad's green. Seriously, we couldn't make this up. Before you run down to the store to pick up this $99 fashion statement, though, don't bother -- they're not on sale quite yet -- it's still looking like the 19th is the date you want to circle on your calendar (or program into your 680, as the case may be).

It looks like somebody picked his nose and touched all the numbers.
That's the most disgusting keypad I've ever seen.
mushrooshi @ Feb 14th 2008 7:48PM
It actually looks pretty cool!
Oh, and "fashion statement"?
All the cool kids are carrying those phones that just look cool but don't do much?
turn_self_off @ Feb 15th 2008 12:21AM
@mushrooshi
meh, thats the iphone, not the centro...
Wwhat @ Feb 15th 2008 5:09AM
You seem to me to have a weird (and infantile) mind matt, and some peculiar nose issues because if your snot is green like that it's time to seek medical help, or get help beating your grass-sniffing addiction.
Ypoknons @ Feb 14th 2008 9:45PM
They did that to the Tilt too, though it at least was silver on black. Helped contribute to TyTN II sales, I understand.
RD @ Feb 14th 2008 7:50PM
I like it!
Matt @ Feb 14th 2008 11:31PM
Check out Centro at your local Best Buy...the keyboard is so tiny that only a teenager can use it efficiently.
Omar @ Feb 14th 2008 7:52PM
Oh I remember now, it's the long-awaited much rumored Palm Snotrocket. The Centro's got nothing on that.
SimonRichards @ Feb 14th 2008 7:56PM
Who cares that the keypad is green?
I like it!
Ethan @ Feb 15th 2008 12:56AM
I care. It looks great.
Liam @ Feb 14th 2008 7:56PM
Should've been a light grey. Not that it matters to me; my mobile can do calls. Texts. That's it!
Mark @ Feb 15th 2008 3:29AM
Why are you on engadget if you are a luddite?
Isaac @ Feb 14th 2008 7:58PM
I actually kinda like it. I want a new decent phone that does not force me to sell my sister into slavery to pay for it. I am gonna buy this when it comes out.
Hammond X @ Feb 14th 2008 10:57PM
Damn! I wish this had come out last week. I blew the money I got for my sister on an iPhone.
Razor @ Feb 14th 2008 11:02PM
Ya but damn it Hammond X, she was worth every penny! Don't worry, I'll come a call'in when the 3G iPhone is released. ;-)
joe23521 @ Feb 15th 2008 10:20AM
I thought I couldn't afford to buy another phone so soon until you reminded me that I do indeed have a sister..
Phineas J. Whoopie @ Feb 14th 2008 7:59PM
Forget the keys, the overall form factor....just...wow. It looks a Kenner cell phone toy for kids. Put it in your Easy Bake Oven tots, and set on Nuke.
ItsTheOMGShow @ Feb 14th 2008 8:01PM
heh, I think it looks pretty cool
muddyh2o @ Feb 14th 2008 8:02PM
perfect for my xbox360
Alex Padilla @ Feb 14th 2008 8:04PM
That's disgusting.
Byzil Mystwing @ Feb 14th 2008 8:05PM
yeah, definately looks very xboxy
carg0 @ Feb 14th 2008 8:05PM
there, ya see this is what happens when devices have unprotected sex with a 360...
Macha88 @ Feb 14th 2008 10:47PM
Sexbox360?
Gman @ Feb 15th 2008 12:28PM
It's MY sexbox! And her name is Sony!
Waylo @ Feb 14th 2008 8:12PM
All I need is verifiable GSM unlock-ability and I'm putting in!
Derek @ Feb 14th 2008 8:17PM
Does Palm just not know when to stop?
1337sauce @ Feb 14th 2008 8:20PM
AJAJAJAJAJA barf centro
ScOObyDoo @ Feb 14th 2008 8:25PM
You need to put effort into making something that fugly.
Alex @ Feb 14th 2008 9:21PM
Impressive... I thought the all-white design couldn't get any uglier.
bob cobb @ Feb 14th 2008 8:47PM
green keys + palm OS ftl
John M @ Feb 14th 2008 8:48PM
It's a fun color, this phone seems clearly aimed at the younger age set. I don't think they want older/business consumers buying this phone, they will get annoyed by the Palm OS, small keyboard and overall lower end construction, I think the color is to aim them at Palms higher end phones.
steerpike @ Feb 14th 2008 8:54PM
I like it... assuming that all smart phones are marketed to a business or high tech level user would be ignoring the fact that everyone's getting more tech savvy and a smart phone for a more casual user is a good thing. Email and sync without being too expensive or all about the business end of things sounds like a win to me.
The form factor is pretty good, and the green is kinda fun in that xbox 360 aesthetic; not everyone wants black or blue.
Julio Angel Ortiz @ Feb 14th 2008 9:07PM
I guess they're marketing to the 10-year old segment.
Man, words can't do just as to how ugly that really is.
Julio Angel Ortiz @ Feb 14th 2008 9:08PM
...words can't do *justice*... ugh, typo.
Jhongerkong @ Feb 14th 2008 9:09PM
OMG TEH KEYBOARDZ IS TEH GREENZ! ITS TEH BROKEN!!1
Encynical at their finest.
Kevin @ Feb 14th 2008 9:29PM
would've been pretty funny, but you overused TEH.
try:
OMG TEH KEYBOARDZ IS GREANNNNNN ISH BROKE CALL FOR HALP
or, in the opposite direction:
NEEDZ MOAR GREAN
Jhongerkong @ Feb 14th 2008 9:34PM
Sorry, 1337 isnt my native language.
trumpton @ Feb 14th 2008 9:24PM
Phew! For a moment I thought that Engadget may have missed a chance to have a cheap pop at Palm, but it's great to see them staying true to form.
What a bunch of snobs they are.
Chuck @ Feb 14th 2008 9:36PM
Now I'm not a big fan of Palm and no fan of Microsoft at all, but I'll give you an amen on that one.
aoi tsuki @ Feb 15th 2008 1:51AM
Normally i'd agree with you on taking shots at Palm, but come on, the green keys are out of left field. With a neutral color like white, i would've expected grey or maybe a slightly muted blue. Compared to the other Centros, this is an odd choice. It looked good on the Xbox360, but i'm not digging the look on the Centro, which i'm debating purchasing myelf.
jupiter @ Feb 14th 2008 9:36PM

Someone in China got his green-keypad Centro more than a week ago...

I like the green. It makes it look kinda funky - and very "spring."
I'm lovin' my red Palm Centro on Sprint. It's my favorite phone ever. Yeah, everybody likes to take shots at Palm OS, and it's not as flashy as Windows Mobile, but I like its simplicity. And the keyboard is easier to use than it seems. I recommend the Centro to any AT&T smartphone fan willing to try something before the knock it.
Mike Street @ Feb 14th 2008 10:34PM
Yeah I think the price point it totally worth it. Humm...I'm considering getting this now.
greg @ Feb 14th 2008 10:50PM
wow I really have mixed feelings about this.
when i first saw it I was like "EEW! it's GREEN!??, freaking xbox!" but now that I keep looking at it it's not too bad.. Maybe if they had it light blue instead it would be more appealing.. Or just stuck to the grey as seen in the earlier pictures.
Gremlin @ Feb 14th 2008 11:10PM
hmmm... this green keypad seems to be getting very mixed reactions. It seems interesting, if not random. I wonder what compelled them to choose green opposed to a more fitting gray, blue, or red.
Hammond X @ Feb 14th 2008 11:11PM
One of the posters on that Chinese forum said,
"Ò»µãÉÌÎñ»úµÄ¸Ð¾õ¶¼Ã»ÓÐÁË£¬²»Ï²»¶£¬»¹ÊǼÌÐøÓÃ650."
That's "you're", not "your".
DP @ Feb 14th 2008 11:20PM
Hmm, not tits.
Brian @ Feb 14th 2008 11:38PM
The point of the Centro is that it's a smartphone for tech-noobs.
I think the greenpad will make it much easier for these nubs to transition from their 12-key keypads.
