Apple intros 2GB iPod shuffle for $69
It's turning into quite the day for shuffle aficionados. Apple just slash the price on its 1GB iPod shuffle this AM to a very palatable $49, and now the company is pushing a brand new 2GB version out the door for $69. The color selections will be the same as little brother, including a (PRODUCT) RED version. It'll be available later this month.

Meh.
Don @ Feb 19th 2008 8:45AM
I agree... Besides, $69 for a 2GB shuffle is still too much when you can get a 2GB Zen Stone Plus (with an LCD screen and built in speaker, although I doubt the speaker is very good) for $59.99.
Don @ Feb 19th 2008 8:47AM
Correction: OLED screen, not LCD (on the Zen Stone Plus)
Cal @ Feb 19th 2008 8:51AM
Zen Stones ftw!
1GB - $35/£28 RRP
2GB - $55/£40 RRP with screen
4GB - $??/£68 RRP with screen
Don @ Feb 19th 2008 8:53AM
Oh, and don't forget, the Zen Stone Plus series has a radio tuner... Sorry Apple, better luck next time.
pscs @ Feb 19th 2008 9:06AM
does it come in pink now?
wombat @ Feb 19th 2008 10:00AM
And the Zen Stone Plus is more than twice the size of the shuffle, and it doesn't have a clip. To each his or her own.
Nick @ Feb 19th 2008 10:09AM
shuffle = great for working out. For 50 bucks I'd get an iPod with a built in clip.. that sounds perfect for just picking it up to have a work out mix on it. Versus getting this Zen Stone/Plus which looks like it has to dangle around my neck or be in my pocket while I run, which is annoying. And the shuffle is priced exactly equal with the Zen Stone.
Side note: Im sick of electronics companies installing a speaker into music players. The person sitting next to you doesn't want to hear your crappy music. As it is there are always the people the are hard of hearing and crank their stuff up so loud that even with the earbuds in you can hear their music.
Scott @ Feb 19th 2008 10:12AM
The Zen Stone doesn't play AAC and doesn't sync with iTunes. Say what you want about iTunes, the FACT is that it's become the standard media manager on Windows/Mac (for better or worse).
That fact alone is enough to make it a non-starter for a lot of average Joe's out there.
Don @ Feb 19th 2008 10:13AM
@wombat
More than twice the size, huh? It's not even twice the size. Not really even that much larger. Get your facts straight.

@Scott
The Zen Stone Plus w/speaker does play AAC. But hey, don't take my word for it. I like to show proof before I spout off at the mouth.

wombat @ Feb 19th 2008 10:36AM
Why don't *you* get *your* facts straight? I said Zen Stone Plus, which comes in 2GB form. The original Zen Stone only comes in 1GB.
iPod shuffle - 1.07"x1.62"x0.41" = 0.71" cubed
Zen Stone Plus - 2.19"x1.39"x0.5" = 1.52" cubed
Don @ Feb 19th 2008 11:08AM
@wombat
I apologize, you are correct. I was mistaken.
Still, feature for feature, the Zen Stone Plus (which also comes in 4GB) seems like the better deal.
Mr. Snuggle Bunny @ Feb 19th 2008 6:01PM
and don't forget the Sansa Clip!
Drew @ Feb 19th 2008 8:39AM
I was more interested in the refurb iPhones, but they priced the 8GB at $349, I'd rather pay the extra $50 and get a fresh one...
Paul @ Feb 19th 2008 11:40AM
I can't remember what site it was (might even be Engadget)... but there was an unconfirmed rumor of a $100 price drop coming soon on the ipod touch and iphone.... they're due for one... as sweet as they are a price drop would do well.
pundit @ Feb 19th 2008 8:38AM
Where do we find such news on the site?
Josh @ Feb 19th 2008 8:41AM
You check the Store. :P They often put stuff on the startpage for Safari users too. http://www.apple.com/startpage/
pundit @ Feb 19th 2008 8:45AM
It turns out it's only on the Shuffle web page. Not the store itself. Us people waiting for the Penryn MBP before throwing our PCs at semi-trucks don't have the luxury of updates in our Safari start page.
Josh @ Feb 19th 2008 9:11AM
You could always use Safari for Windows, you know.
ssuk @ Feb 19th 2008 9:34AM
Or just set your homepage to that address on any browser and it works fine.
pundit @ Feb 19th 2008 9:39AM
Yes. But I prefer Firefox. Regardless, Apple didn't advertise it on their site. It's just a little note on the Shuffle page which may have been there while the store was down, since it was the information page, not the store part.
MS @ Feb 19th 2008 8:44AM
Wow...
Apple are becoming a parody of themselves...
eric f. @ Feb 19th 2008 11:15AM
you comment makes no sense at all.
CosterMonger @ Feb 19th 2008 1:09PM
Do not eat iPod shuffle.
Bevon Findley @ Feb 19th 2008 8:39AM
Nothing to see here, move along, move along
Quito @ Feb 19th 2008 8:40AM
Macbook Pro. Repeat ten thousand times until they release the damn thing.
Eckofish @ Feb 19th 2008 8:42AM
This wouldn't be big news if it weren't for the fact that my girlfriend just bought me the (PRODUCT) RED iPod shuffle. She's going to feel terrible. I'm not impressed.
ClaMs @ Feb 19th 2008 8:44AM
Eckofish, much Kudos for the profile pic kid! :D
Eckofish @ Feb 19th 2008 8:47AM
Ha! Thanks. I found the generic flickr pic a little too bland. Not many people notice.
think_tanker @ Feb 19th 2008 12:13PM
Well at least you can convince her that since she purchased the (Product Red) version, more of her money went to AIDS victims all over the world...That might make her feel better!
Luis @ Feb 19th 2008 8:44AM
This is stupid!
Kizorblade @ Feb 19th 2008 10:48AM
*Clears throat*
THIS IS APPLE!
Macha88 @ Feb 19th 2008 12:45PM
STUUUPID???
THIS... IS... AAAAAAPLE
*kick*
Baba Booey @ Feb 19th 2008 8:45AM
Why get this when you can get a Sansa Clip???
A screen, ums, great sq, etc.
And the 4gb is coming out for 80$ soon.
Al @ Feb 19th 2008 4:35PM
exactly.
Nick @ Feb 19th 2008 8:45AM
Ive been online all morning and havent had a problem accessing the store... Is it cause I'm in Mexico? The $49 Shuffle appears no problem, but there isn't anything else notable to report.
JQuilty @ Feb 19th 2008 8:47AM
Still not worth it. I can get a Zen Stone Plus with 2GB, a screen, an FM Radio, and a universally used connector for $55.
Gary Conrad @ Feb 19th 2008 9:49AM
All you I can get the Zen Stone Plus for x dollars please do so. This way they might sell ten this month.
Antti @ Feb 19th 2008 8:52AM
The 1gb is still 89eur(131usd) in europe. I see big profit.
Gremlin @ Feb 19th 2008 8:54AM
Apple should've come out with this one a long time ago, but whatever; at least the option is there now. Since it IS 2008 after all though, I would've liked to see a 4GB for $100 as well.
John @ Feb 19th 2008 12:37PM
That is the silliest post I've ever read in my life...
I mean, you mentioned it being 2008, and you actually WANTING to pay $100 for a 4gb mp3 player with no screen... are you mad?
Hotrod @ Feb 19th 2008 8:54AM
I heard there was going to be a small Apple event near the end of the month, thats probably when they're going to release the new MBPs. I know it sucks and we've waited forever, but be patient guys! Only 10 days or so left.
Drew @ Feb 19th 2008 8:56AM
funny how the Shuffle refurbs are the same price as the NEW ones... c'mon Apple $29...
L @ Feb 19th 2008 8:57AM
I use a 1GB screen-less Zen Stone...and even those 1GB are an overkill without a screen to navigate.
Paul S. @ Feb 19th 2008 9:00AM
Wow, to think I paid $150 for the original 1GB "USB stick" iPod shuffle just 3 years ago.
Tom @ Feb 19th 2008 9:17AM
I paid 150 euro for a 32mb mp3 player 7 years ago. Please just stop comparing with older players. Flash gets cheaper every day, that's the way it goes
sinai @ Feb 19th 2008 1:46PM
moral of the story? apple charges you prices that they should have been charging 4 years ago TODAY.
pc @ Feb 19th 2008 9:03AM
2gb sansa express $30 office depot on sale normally $50 you get screen, fm radio, voice recorder, plugs directly into any pc without additional wires, expandable storage via micro sd card

Homeboy @ Feb 19th 2008 9:07AM
Still $15-20 too much for me.
