How exciting!!! However, given the number of websites that report when the Apple Store goes down and the excitement this "event" seems to bring, I don't think you can buy marketing like that.  I don't think it is necessary for Apple to bring the store down to make an update like this but I think they do it because it generates additional interest and a sense (sometimes incorrectly) of anticipation. People (not everyone, but most) heading over to Apple store want to buy Apple's stuff and nothing else, for the reasons above. Want cheap stuff? Don't care about the good looks? Not interested in the latest cool technology? You go elsewhere.
