Sony looks to grow OLED biz and display sizes

Possibly buoyed by margins produced by its $2500 XEL-1, Sony is pumping 22-billion yen ($203.5 million) into scaling OLED production technology up to medium and large panels. No word on what sort of sizes are meant by "medium" and "large," but we're hoping that "medium" comes in around 30-inches and "large" runs upwards of the 45-inch mark. Competition being what it is, Sony probably hopes so, too. With OLED lifetimes on the rise, the only thing that keeps these power-miserly, high-contrast, great color and wide-viewing angle displays out of a home theater setup is sheer size. Given the race between manufacturers, we're hoping to see falling prices, rising sizes and shorter times to market.

hopefully they can remove the dorky off-center arm and integrate the ugly box into the set, or will that eliminate the 'trick' of the super slim screen?

sony is becoming competitive again.......in displays its already starting to get the "trinitron" reputation back.

hopefully a few years of this growth will make people once again say "it's a sony" .

Would it be so hard to just make an array of existing OLED screens to make a larger screen...would that box beneath the screen grow linearly with the array size? Whats the problem sony?

I really dig all the thinness but I think there's a point when something is too thin. And we've reached it. Do they really have to lose the sexy curves just so they can get it thinner? and wtf is that ugly off centre stand and weird box. If they fix the design a bit these screens will be awesome

The thickness (or lack of) is only a plus. The real benefit is everything else =)

I saw the 11 inch at the Sorny Store yesterday and thought the picture quality looked amazing. Can't wait to see a larger screen...
