I was genuinely impressed with the choices that mobile carriers over there offer their customers, all for much cheaper than what we see in the US (and you can't use €25 = $450 excuse here). Aside from unlimited texts and data plans, free incoming and nights/weekends, they also offer free roaming on other networks across the CIS space and relatively cheap roaming anywhere else in the world. As of now, the competition between Vympelkom (Beeline trademark), MTS, and MegaFon is so fierce that the rates have dropped dramatically over the past year or so. For the short time that I was there, my signal did not drop below 4/5 bars, even going across Russia by train. Now compare that with US GSM coverage and the all-too-frequent "Network Busy" messages in densely populated areas. No wonder that the Russian cell operators report such large earnings.. the sheer size of their customer base is astounding, to say the least; this is something that will take US cellphone companies years to catch up to.. provided they realize what they are losing. I have faith in T-Mobile, as it is an international company.. the problem is that people are willing to put up with the high rates and pseudo-unlimited plans offered by current cellphone market competitors in the US.. In addition, Europe has no monopoly on the GSM band (as we all know, AT&T and T-Mobile are the only companies that offer GSM network-based plans) and the bands are not as tightly regulated by an agency, such as the FCC.

Akhan Almagambetov

Comments on

I can't believe how many people seem to have no knowledge of Dumb and Dumber!
