BusinessWeek reports iPhone SDK will be late

With seven days left in the month to announce the iPhone SDK, BusinessWeek is reporting that a reliable source has it that Apple will be delaying officially sanctioned 3rd party apps, making it late by between one to three weeks. Yes, it would absolutely suck -- but there's always Ziphone.

I don't get the connection between the iPhone SDK and the Macbook Pro refresh. You mean just if there are any shared resources between the two? I'd guess that's not the case, but who knows.

Just buy a Macbook Pro already. *that's* how you'll know when the refresh happens. It'll be the day after. :)

My theory is that they're delaying the MBP refresh to prevent a Mac Geek Riot because of all the people who bought one on October 26th like myself. I have my sword here.

It's probably just going to be the same thing with a multitouch trackpad, Penryn, and some minor changes like getting rid of that magnetic latch.

That's funny monkfishbandana, but the new MacBook Pro will get more than a magnetic latch [and better damn well get that]. Updated outer enclosure [damn well needs one], Air-like keyboard [way better than Pro's current keyboard], LED backlight display [on the 17"], large trackpad with those extra gestures, even thinner and possibly lighter, faster processor, better graphics card, and a SSD option?

We were promised that the sdk would be hear around February, way back in November, and it wasn't really mentioned at MacWorld, so I'm pretty sure that the sdk was bound to be late. I'm rather apathetic about this, I mean you should only be sad and bawling right now if you haven't jailbroken your iPhone or iTouch.

Or even not. I did the 1.1.1 jailbreak and played with a few apps but never really got any use out of anything, so I applied 1.1.2 knowing it would break my jailbreak.

Honestly, I haven't missed it.

I don't doubt I'll love some of the third-party apps once they're available, but I just use it for what it is and never have to worry about the thing flaking out or a software update whacking my apps. That's why I bought an iPhone. If I wanted something I had to worry about crashing all the time, I'd have kept my WM5 phone.

but yeah i have 1.1.1 JB and i hardly use any of the extras. i finally tried voice notes but it crashed my phone -- the only app to blatantly due so thus far. don't really need file management stuff personally; too clunky and hax0ry anyway. thought being able to customize the springboard is nice... i mean who needs stock.app you glorified gamblers? =)

However I digress, in my past statement I wasn't implying that we don't need an sdk from Apple, but that jailbreakers don't have to worry too much about it being delayed.

I'll second that. Apart from the book reader application and some Summerboard themes that I designed myself (http://jyopp.com/iphone.php), I haven't come across anything really compelling from the third-party apps so far.

I'm working on an application myself that should have broad appeal, but I'm kind of letting it languish. It will be advantageous for it to sync with the desktop, which is one thing I won't be able to do without the official SDK and docs. I don't want to choose one kind of database and then find out it won't work with the iSync conduits, or find out that Apple is adding Core Data support with the SDK update.

Still waiting on my new MBP, at this point I've lost hope for my iPhone and bought an N95-3 simply because I don't believe Apple is the least bit dependable when it comes to crap like this.

nah, leopard wasn't delayed as long as vista. vista/longhorn was first previewed in 2003, and finally released (after they started from scratch again) in 2007. it was 2 years late at least.

It used to be if Apple announced something ahead of time, they always delivered early (Tiger, switch to Intel, etc) . Not sure if they achieved the goals early or if they set the time longer than anticipated so they looked good but I'd much rather Apple set the date out 3 months later and then ship it "early" than the seemingly painful trend of announcing a date and then pushing it back.

And still Leopard is/was buggy as hell, IMHO as bad as Vista. At least on Vista I didn't have to reboot to get fucking wireless to work. (Which is still an issu with even 10.5.2) At least on vista I wasn't having issues with crashing when I changed wifi 2 Ethernet, changed the location and bam....instant and perm lockup. I removed Leopard and installed Vista /w RC SP1.

ZiPhone sucks.

Check the source code - even the newest revision in the SVN does not fully verify that the ramdisk is sitting. So if something goes wrong - you're going to fuck your baseband and bootloader.

Ziphone is made from stolen code of the dev team and geohot.

I love a lot of what mac does, but how they lock down the iPhone just makes me laugh. However, I've just bought a sprint mogul now and when combined with EV-DO (soon to be rev A) and the Skyfire browser (when it comes out shortly) it will more than be a match for the iPhone (well, in some ways, in features it will kick it's butt). That will keep me for another year till Android comes out and mops the floor with all the Operating Systems on the market.
