No zoom ring generally means that the lense assembly is very compact while the camera is off. At the same time, this also means that the lense must move into an effective position during startup, which takes time (read: no instant start, like, let's say, a Fuji 6500fd). There is a 10% off and was a good deal. Have tested the camera mostly late evening and night shots so far and they have come out well. At ISO3200 the stills are very usable for small prints. Not for pixel peepers. Don't expect SLR quality. But this Sony seems to have ironed out the issues with H7/9 models and is very much an improved camera. The Zoom is fast and autofocus is quick, very less hunting in low light at the long end of the zoom. I will post more reviews as I play with this new toy more in coming days.
