Hitachi and Canon finalize paperwork on LCD partnership

Completing the final segment of the three-way Hitachi / Panasonic / Canon LCD mashup, Hitachi & Canon have finalized paperwork on the deal. Canon will take its 24.9% piece of Hitachi Displays, Ltd, pending regulatory approval, which should pave the way for plenty of sweet IPS-enabled panels and maybe even some OLED action in the future if anyone feels up to it. The specifics are in the read link as usual, we'll judge the wisdom of this partnership when there's a new HDTV on the shelf.

I dont understand why Canon wants to get into the already crowded HDTV segment. Developing the SED television was OK but once that did not work out, I think they should stick to what they know best and get me a new 5D Mark II that I've been waiting for.

Yep, for the 10th-gen LCD market its
Sony/Sharp/Toshiba
Panasonic/Hitachi/Canon
LG-Phillips
Samsung-Sony(maybe)
For lower end makers they usually get it from Taiwan/China made by AU Optics and Chimei. Most of the major brands sub-30" LCDs use these guys as well. These new factories are for producing mother glass for higher-end TVs going up to 60".
