Its not really new, buts its recently been brought into the limelight thanks to Apple. Now that people know about, its what they want. Apple didn't make touchscreen, Apple doesn't own touch screen, Apple just showed people how cool touchscreen was. As such, any devices following the iPhone, unless blatantly so, are not "iphone copycats" or "iphone knockoffs".
