Verizon aims to deploy 100G network capabilities in 2009

If you'll recall, the IEEE gave the all important thumbs up to 100G as the next Ethernet speed, and while we've seen such a milestone met on the Internet2, Verizon's looking to bring it to the masses in just twelve short months. According to Fred Briggs, Verizon Business' executive vice president of operations and technology, the firm is aiming to "deploy 100G network capabilities over all its major routes within the United States." Verizon actually tested out its 100Gbps capabilities last year on a video transmission from Tampa to Miami, Florida, and apparently, the results "showed that it could deploy 100G on routes and not disrupt current wavelengths." Granted, we wouldn't expect many consumers to actually be able to take advantage of all this speed right away, but even if you're not down with (or nearby) any of Verizon's forthcoming offerings, there's always DOCSIS 3.0.

No, you will not be getting 100G soon. When they say they "will be deploying it", they are refering to backbone links. Not customer links. There are 10G links all over the place today. But not to customers.

Ham, there could be an issue with Verizon coming to any franchise agreements in your town. I live upstate in Orange County and Verizon is due to hit my town next after they hit the city of Newburgh, can't wait!

Have you tried any 3G/EVDO connections?
I only had dialup, and overpriced satellite also.
I am using Sprint, mainly because I despise Verizon, but either one is a good alternative. With a decent antenna and/or a booster, you can have great speeds, plus take the net with you when you go anywhere.

Hate to burst your bubbles but they won't be bringing 100Gbps service to individual consumers. If we're lucky this will result in 100Mbps service though. Makes me wish I was in a Fios area. :(

I'm sure FIOS is in a decent area somewhere. Besides, the DSL I have now is 3 Mbps down/512 kbps up and that's max speed. FIOS is like heaven compared to that.

FYI to people thinking this is internet speed, it's not. As stated above 100Mb internet is most likely from this. The bulk of the bandwidth is hdtv service and other telecommunications.

Nobody is going to have a 100Gb pipe to their home in 2009, no matter how it's split up. This is carrier backbone technology, and it will stay that way for a very long time. Gigabit stuff is just now becoming affordable for consumers, 10Gb is still years away, and 100Gb is even farther than that.

Not really. Bringing 100g to Verizon's backbone routers.

Cool, but doesn't translate directly to consumers.. just means they'll have better tech and potentially increases their bandwidth. But I don't see where this article even mentions that. They could be replacing 100 10g routers with 10 100g ones. Who knows?

Their tech is apparently improving, but we won't have 100gigabit connections, let alone 100gb routers or network cards soon.

Still no FiOS in AZ at all, but Verizon has "plans" to eventually roll out service here...I'm sure we can expect something like 15/5 service sometime by the year 2015 when the concept of FTTP is obsolete.

I know distributing the FiOS framework is expensive, but maybe VZ should consider getting it rolled out in more than 3 or 4 states before they try developing even newer technologies.

Verizon has said numerous times that they have absolutely no intention of throttling or blocking servies, which is undoubtedly an attempt to mock the sh*t out of Comcast. But if they do go through with 100Gb core connections, that will give them MAJOR marketing points against Comcast and TWC: "We don't have any need to block your services because we have plenty of bandwidth ... unlike those OTHER guys!"

It also gives them the opportunity to offer speeds that cable companies (right now) can only dream of. 100Mb-to-the-home? You never know. Of course, it could also be in preparation to take on cable as a media provider. HD channels take up a ton of bandwidth.

It's just nice to actually see a company be proactive instead of not move fast enough then suddenly blame the customers for daring to use the bandwidth that they're paying for. (*coughComcastcough*)

meh, screw fios... as long as im near my schools wifi i get 14mb/13mb. not sure what its rated but thats what the download test says.

When and what company do you expect will find a way to blanket the whole nation with wifi at the speeds of this 100G? Imagine that... driving to L.A. from Florida, you can use your laptop in car to download movie rentals and watch. Of course we all know that by this time robots will be driving so its no problem for the whole family to watch.

Verizon is bringing FIOS to neighborhoods that were never offered DSL. I have Verizon DSL, so as FIOS has been rolled out, all I could do is look on with envy. Here's hoping that Verizon will first bring this even-faster service to the DSL customers who have been left behind. Fair is fair.

Not sure if ANY of the comments addressed this, but downloading 12.5GB per second isn't that special for homes because there would still be a LOT more tech to catch up. Such as your HARD DRIVE speed! throwing 12.5GB per second is worthless when your hard drive (home desktop standard 7200rpm) can only save data @ 3.0Gbits SATA 3.0 which is .375GB per second.

So you can download @ 12.5GB
but you can only save @ .375GB!!! lol, what a joke, saying you can download HiDef movies and all that crap in a second.

Even if you compared download speed to a SCSI hard drive (server standard 10,000 or 15,000rpm) Ultra-640 SCSI @ 640MB/s which is still .625GB/s!!! I actually wasn't able to find a hard drive on newegg.com that supported this standard but thought i'd through it out there.
