Nokia's N810 internet tablet gets a $90 price cut
If you've been looking for some kind of incentive to dip into the savings account and splurge on a new gadget, this may be music to your ears. Nokia has just lowered the price on its jack-of-all-trades N810 internet tablet, shaving $90 off the MSRP to bring it down to a highly affordable $389.99. Of course, you can probably find the WiFi-sportin', QWERTY-havin', GPS-rockin' little guy slightly cheaper if you troll the internet (which we know you will). Before you lay down the cash, though, you might want to ask yourself this: does the price drop mean a new version is on the way, like, say... that WiMAX-equipped N830 we've been hearing about? It's a tough call, but we know you'll make the right decision.

W00tness!!!!! Now I'm gettin' one!
JohnTitor @ Mar 11th 2008 6:46PM
I still think the N800 is better
$230 and you get two full-sized SDHC slots
Tim @ Mar 11th 2008 10:44PM
@JohnTitor
No GPS...
Ayman @ Mar 11th 2008 5:12PM
this has not reached us yet and it has a price cut already dam
Chebwa @ Mar 11th 2008 5:45PM
Yes it is...
Chebwa @ Mar 11th 2008 5:45PM
OH, US! I read that as U.S. : )
dreamscape86 @ Mar 11th 2008 5:13PM
I still can't afford the 810, but I'd be much more excited if they dropped the N800 by $90...
holycow @ Mar 11th 2008 5:13PM
Hmm i think i should get this rather than get a GPS
Ben @ Mar 11th 2008 5:22PM
You might want to read a little more about the poor satellite lock time before making that decision...
Chrisphillers @ Mar 11th 2008 7:36PM
Ben - Not sure if that is the case now - if you use AGPS it has a 5-10 lock on I believe???
thethirdmoose @ Mar 11th 2008 8:23PM
Well using AGPS can be tricky without cell service...
CL @ Mar 11th 2008 5:16PM
Well...they have been talking about the WiMax version forever...even back when there was only the n800, if they really bring that out and the data plan is not too outrageously expensive, I may get one.
mymaclife @ Mar 11th 2008 5:20PM
As long as they promise to release an SDK in the next year to give me loads of things it doesn't have now; then I can complain about them not doing it soon enough. Anyway there's no fucking toaster or washing machine built in... cheapskates! ;)
macegr @ Mar 11th 2008 7:24PM
"Back when there was only the n800"? My Nokia 770, happily charging on my desk for another day of mobile Linux goodness, scoffs. And these cost only $100-$120. I suggest picking up a Nokia 770, seeing if you like having a device with this form factor, and decide if you'd use the extra speed and features of an 800 series tablet before shelling out $400.
Greg @ Mar 11th 2008 11:04PM
Macegr, I bought a 770 at a similar price to yours, but as they've become rare, they've gotten more expensive. The N800 is probably the best bargain now, though the N810 is nicer. I think both the N800 and N810 are more stable than our 770's, theirs browsers can handle youtube, and they can do Skype not just Gizmo. Not that I don't love my 770; I do.
Ryan @ Mar 11th 2008 5:21PM
Does this thing run Java applets?
Neil @ Mar 11th 2008 5:27PM
I really love this bad boy, but I think the price needs to come down a little more ($350 would be good), as is I'd rather drop $299 on an iPod Touch.
Goopy @ Mar 11th 2008 9:37PM
u could get touch with 280. I got mine for 250
dizilbdog @ Mar 11th 2008 5:28PM
I'd like the wimax one but I need the service first who knows when it will be in the Boston area. Sprint get your ass on that Wimax
OneLove @ Mar 11th 2008 5:35PM
how about a highly affordable $250.
iKrolm @ Mar 11th 2008 6:56PM
lol, who wrote 'highly affordable $389.99'???
that isn't highly affordable for everyone...

sinjinn @ Mar 11th 2008 5:42PM
i am intrested in this but im so sure it is so well supoorted. how many choices of gps programs can it have? i have enough trouble finding a decent one for windows.
Joe H @ Mar 11th 2008 5:43PM
Not only is there poor satellite lock time, but also, the built-in map software sucks, and you have to pay extra for navigation (the program isn't worth it at all). There is a freeware alternative that is much better (Maemo Mapper) but you need to either pre download the map cache and directions, or be tethered to a phone the entire time so it can download directions.
Jonathon @ Mar 13th 2008 1:17PM
Don't know about the N810, but I just use Google Maps with my N95. It doesn't do turn by turn, but it is more than sufficient to find what/where you are looking for.

331. Not bad.
Rollins @ Mar 11th 2008 6:40PM
Any idea how long that's going on? I might sell my iPod Touch for one if it's going on for a few weeks - I'm going on vacation next week and won't have time to eBay it.
Alan Partridge @ Mar 12th 2008 7:30AM
This works on the UK store too! Brings the price down to £280 ($560)
Jubei @ Mar 11th 2008 5:54PM
If you want it, then get it. Although with Apples recent announcements and the plethora of quality applications arriving within a few months, it would be a waste of money to buy into this product. It's akin to purchasing a Zune and hearing about games coming soon for the device, only to be superseded by the higher quality games ( console level ) to be added to the iPhone and Touch in the coming months.
michael @ Mar 11th 2008 6:33PM
What are you talking about? Your words are rather contradicting.
One thing, there's absolutely no reason to bring in another iPhone-is-still-better comment. 2nd, the news about games for Zune was barely a few weeks ago. Along with the promise of it going on in the spring (of this year).
Compare that to waiting for an 'official' SDK coming from Apple for more than half a year, with no absolute certainty of this "console" level game to be introduce in a few months. Seems that your words are a bit off there.
xbit @ Mar 11th 2008 7:41PM
@Jubei
Apple are releasing a new iPhone/iPod touch with 480x800 pixel screen and Flash support? Since when?
Homeboy @ Mar 11th 2008 5:55PM
Nokia should make the successor a highly portable linux machine because at the moment this baby needs to have more use in order to attract a vast audience.
Mark @ Mar 11th 2008 10:11PM
Yeah, what the hell is the point of an overgrown PDA with a crappy half-assed keyboard?

Greg @ Mar 11th 2008 11:08PM
And here I thought the N810, like the N800 and 770 before it, WAS a highly portable linux machine.
nVidiot @ Mar 11th 2008 6:03PM
I owned one for about 3 weeks and returned it.
It was just too slow for me.. the thing chugs at just about every task.
It's much slower at GPS than my Garmin 360, and the browsing is much slower than my iPod touch.. come to think of it, why the hell did I buy this thing?
ROFL.. anyways.. I wish that along with a drop in price they'd release a more expensive version with a beefier processor and a bit more RAM.
I personally think these mini-handheld devices are still a bit ahead of their time. They just don't perform well enough or have batteries that last long enough right now. Just my not so humble picky opinion.
ToniCipriani @ Mar 11th 2008 6:12PM
Meh. A lot of retailers have been selling it way below the MSRP already a long time ago.
Greg @ Mar 11th 2008 11:11PM
With that "scenezine" discount (thank you reader "N810 discount"!), it's $331 shipped; I haven't seen it for much under $400. And if Nokia is dropping its price, maybe the retailer prices will drop too.

It does have Skype though.

Skype dead in the water technology.
Chips implanted into our cerebral cortex is the next generation of mobile phone. I kid you not.
The borg generation is not far off.
There will be two types of people in this world; those who are pure bloods (blue pills) - where they stay clear of technology period, and those who fully immerse themselves in the world of gadgets and gizmos and VR.
Exciting times we are living gus.

I'm waiting for the upgrade that has a cpu good enough to actually run some video formats like h264 and turn this into an all purpose tablet (aka open-sourced iphone/itouch with a better screen).

I bought the N800 6 months ago when Circuit City had a sale. $200 minus 10% coupon. Definately worth $180 but neither is worth $390.

I played with the WiMax version - N830 at a Sprint conference and it was sick.
David @ Mar 12th 2008 6:48AM
Okay. Since no one has said it yet, I'll point this out:
Eee PC FTW
It does Java, Flash, has a real touch-type capable keyboard, same resolution, does Skype with video, bigger screen etc..., etc...
The perfect portable internet device + laptop
I run XP on mine. I've yet to find any application it has not managed to run well for me. 100% satisfied 5 month owner.

Sorry - but when i go to the nokia USA store it says $439 ? How do you get $399?
