HP launches the 13.3-inch dv3000 laptop in Asia

It's been a while since the HP dv2000 laptop made its original appearance, and it looks like HP's giving the newest version a new model number as well as a slight redesign -- say bonjour to the dv3000. Based around an oh-so-hip 13.3-inch display, the overall look of the machine is basically the same as the older model, but it's slightly smaller. Inside, you're looking at a 2.5GHz T9300 Penryn Core 2 Duo, GeForce Go 8400M graphics with HDMI out, 2GB of RAM, a 160GB disk, VGA webcam, a dual-layer burner, and an unusual combo USB / eSATA port that we'd like to take a closer look at. Not a bad piece of kit for $1,399 -- too bad it's only coming out in Asia around May.

HP is the largest computer maker in the world and I've been with them for a long time. Their Pavilion line of computers used to be excellent when they were made in Taiwan but since China began manufacturing everything in the mainland, such as the HDD and the cases their quality slipped. I wish I could buy HP from JAPAN rather than Shenzhen China.

I'm an HP FANBOY and proud of it. Their laptops in such as the TX tablet outperform my Lenovo X60 (with the exception of the battery time). Their desktops aren't truly gaming machine quality yet, but they'll get there eventually.

I agree with ya. My Pavilion zt3000 is rock solid. It's too big and bulky for me now and I don't use it so often but I'm sad to part with it. It has a 1600x1050 resolution screen and that was the midrange option. Oh how I miss that.

So does this mean that if I buy the dv3000 in Asia and bring it to the US and something goes wrong, I'd have to bring it back to Asia to have it fixed under warranty? I'm just curious, because I have read that if you buy an HP laptop here in the US, the warranty will not be honored in Asia for example.

No I do not hate HP, I even have 2 HP laptops.

Except that the TX1000 tablet didn't have an active digitiser, so it sucked to write on. HP do make a decent tablet, it is the 2710p, that said, I would still buy the Thinpad X61t over it.

Um... I can get a 13.3in Macbook for 1099, or fully loaded for 1299-1499, and load Windows on it if I really wanted to. Why on earth would I get this HP when the Mac is way more stylish?

Looks like an amazing product, way to drop the ball on pricing though.

Remember that this price includes a 2.5 Penryn processor and dedicated graphics (slightly more expensive than intergrated intel graphics). Downgrade the processor to 1.83Ghz, integrated graphics, and 1 GB ram, and the price will probably undercut the Macbook's 1099.

If HP would just release this 13 inch model with identical specs to the lowest macbook, drop the fingerprint reader and esata, drop an x3100 into it instead of the 8400m, and sell it for at least 300 less than a macbook, this thing would be a SLAYER.

Desparately needed addition to HP's lineup. Over priced compared to the competition. :( Sadness ensues.

It was the way the article said "that we'd like to take a closer look at" that made me think Nilay had never heard of such witchcraft and that therefore the combination had never been seen before now, I wasn't saying it wasn't unusual in terms of the number of laptops that actually had such a port.

Honestly, when comparing comprable Macs and HPs side by side, depending if the HP is brand new or end-of-product sale, Macs and HPs are pretty comprable in pricing.

This laptop is what I have been looking for, Its small, and very powerful, I do a lot of web stuff and yes, sometimes gaming :) But the 8400 could do quite about of gaming :) But Man I really want this laptop, but I gotta get a guitar amp first :P

I'm an HP fanboy. I've interned for them and will again this summer. And this is what I've been waiting for! Powerful, thin, fully featured and outrageously sexy! With a 25% employee discount, I don't mind the price tag :p. I was almost ready to buy the dv2000, but I knew I should wait.

As an HP fanboy, I have to admit models prior to dv1000/dv4000 series were pretty lame, but ever since those models, HP's stepping it up thanks, in part (we have to admit), to Apple focusing on design a great deal.

You know what'd be great... if the silver casing parts were aluminum (maybe, thus, the smaller footprint). You gotta love the shiny silver edges, they look chromed. Not that I'm a big fan of chrome, but a touch of it definitely makes it more elegant... and durable.
