I hate how this misconception spreads around! ITS like the damn megahertz myth from earlier!

Listen now... professional D-SLRs have LARGE sensors, either APS size(smaller than 35MM) or 35MM size. Usually anything over ~12 megapixels is going to be a 35MM sized sensor. Whether the sensor is APC or 35MM size, ALL D-SLR SENSORS ARE 5-10X BIGGER THAN COMPACT CONSUMER CAMERA SENSORS! Literally, most consumer cameras have tiny dime sized sensors. If you try and pack 24 megapixels into such a thing, the pixels will be so small that anything but perfect lighting conditions will come out a noisy mess. Hence the reason why an 8Mpixel DSLR takes much better pictures than an 8Mpixel compact consumer camera. They are in a completely different leagure. Similarly, decent 8Mpixel consumer cameras will take much better pictures than a 8Mpixel cellphone camera. Cellphone camera sensors are even smaller, like the size of a fingernail.

See http://www.dpreview.com/learn/?/Glossary/Camera_System/sensor_sizes_01.htm for some good info about this. Remember, if you want great photos, avoid 8,000,000 megapixel consumer cameras, and use the money for a real DSLR.

Sam Winter

Comments on Sony's 25 megapixel Alpha A900 to arrive in August or September

You'd need a bigger lens because the sensor is physically a different size. Because green doesn't always have to be on the left of red, so you can move between each photosite and get a new pixel. This is the way "Effective MegaPixels" are counted for nearly every digital camera (effective megapixels are always just bearly smaller than the number of actual pixels, actual pixel count being the count of every photosite, so effective loose the count of the very outside pixels.) The only cameras that do not count this way are the Sigma cameras (DP-1, SD14) based around the Foveon chip which does not use a Bayer filter and capture light on every pixel, Better Light scan backs that scan the image in a 4x5 camera and have no interpolation, and the currently theoretical prototype Kodak sensor with white or Luminance photosites added into the mix.

Think before you speak of things you know not of.

And to the others out there: No it will not do video, no the A-100 does not do video, the sensors are not made to handle that kind of data well for long periods.

It will not be as fast as the Nikon D3, because the D3 has less data to get out to the buffer between shots. Note the difference in fps for the Canon 1D Mk III (10 fps, 10 MP) compaired to the 1Ds Mk III (5fps, 21.1MP), also Nikon has been making cameras for a few decades longer than Sony, so their shutter technology is a little better, and that will lead to faster shutter speeds.

And finally if you really need the megapixels I must recommend Phase One's P-45 back or the Hasselblad H3DII at 39 megapixels, and the mother of them all the Better Light Super 10-K (10200 x 13600 pixels with NO Bayer interpolation, so lets just say the resolution is as good as 416 Megapixels, only problem is it takes at least 2 minutes to make a capture.)

kb2zuz

Comments on Sony's 25 megapixel Alpha A900 to arrive in August or September

Won't diffraction limit image quality?

drewmk2

Comments on Sony's 25 megapixel Alpha A900 to arrive in August or September

I still use film

aegisknight

Comments on Sony's 25 megapixel Alpha A900 to arrive in August or September

oh my soul...

it would take like a minute to write the file, another 2 to copy it to your computer and open it. but hey, DSLRs last for a long time and you'll want it to still work nicely in 10 years time (but I'd buy a cheaper one and upgrade by then).

and also I'd hope this thing "records videos" - the burst mode frame rate they'll have to make it really fast :)

but it's great. not bad.
