Oh sure, we've come across
oodles of
cameras designed to be
mounted on or around one's noggin, but c'mon, surely we aren't the only folks who reckoned no one actually
used these things, right? Taking a huge leap forward for lifebloggers and fans of recording sweet jumps everywhere, Yamaha's Josh Hill managed to not only rock a GoPro Motorsports HERO camera for an entire race, but he also grabbed the gold in front of some 41,000 onlookers in the Minneapolis Metrodome. See kids -- strapping gizmos onto your head isn't
just for nerds and basement dwellers, after all. Peep some footage from the headcam below.

corr blimey, that's awesome!

I just vomited all over my keyboard. Damn, that was disorienting.
Audio quality is a bit weird, his bike sounds like a constipated bear. Frankly, I don't know much about supercross, is it possible that he was actually riding a constipated bear? I did not know bears could jump that well.

As a rider myself, I'm pumped that this got posted to engadget.
This race was well over a week ago but, it's cool to see what it is like riding at a Pro level.

That camera doesn't look like the most aerodynamic design possible. I'm not a racer or anything, but if I was trying to win a race that's the last thing I'd want strapped to any part of my body or vehicle.
Ally @ Mar 25th 2008 5:56PM
His huge shirt dosent look to areodynamic either, im not sure its a huge factor in motocross
JerkyChew @ Mar 25th 2008 10:01PM
You've obviously never raced motocross... Aerodynamics don't mean poo.

"Oh sure, we've come across oodles of cameras designed to be mounted on or around one's noggin..."
I just searched back through 20 pages of "weables" and didn't see a single other "noggin" type camera. There is only one entry under "helmetcamera". If that's "oodles", I'm standing in molten silver.
I've been looking for a "noggin" cam that won't break the bank for shooting sports.

Oregon Scientific makes a cheaper camera that is ok. It's good enough for YouTube and won't be a huge loss if something happens to it. This is a video I did while kayaking (it was an easy run)

Amazon had it for a good price.
mattworldwide @ Mar 25th 2008 7:55PM
Yeah, aerodynamics are important in street racing, but in motocross, not at all.
jcs @ Mar 25th 2008 9:53PM
GoPro video cameras are awesome, popular for extreme sports. They come with a waterproof case and multiple mounting options, are light weight and not very expensive. Here's a video of a offshore surfski run in a 40 knot wind http://blip.tv/file/644163/
mrpoo @ Mar 25th 2008 10:00PM
I don't quite now what I just saw, but it bored my balls off.
Dailey @ Mar 26th 2008 12:00AM
Sponsored!!! ME? Yes...
spaceb @ Mar 26th 2008 1:16AM
That chick from the stabbing article on that bike would make this more interesting.
fgpx78 @ Mar 26th 2008 5:34AM
He just thought he had no chache of making a good video staying behind someone! The dirt wuold have ruined the lenses! And then...he found himself first!
Michael @ Mar 26th 2008 12:58PM
mrpoo, I've never heard a constipated bear, at least that I know of, and I don't think I'd want to get very close to one anyway. Actually, the sound is quite good. That is what a 4 stroke sounds like. You might have heard 2 strokes from a few years ago that are not used in Supercross or Motocross any more, at least on a professional level.
The video quality is better than I've seen with any of the other helmet cams.
steve @ Mar 26th 2008 1:35PM
i hope he's sponsored by them, b/c that camera is a big POS
steve @ Mar 26th 2008 1:36PM
worst helmet camera available....but you get what you paid for

This guy's a pro rider and the best he can do is the Go Pro Camera? Good God! He could of at least busted out his wallet and paid an extra hundred or so and got the 540 Total Control Cam setup from http://stuntcams.com/shop/product_info.php/cPath/21/products_id/107 - (It's the cat's A**!) Maybe if he needs an upgrade, I'll buy him one, as I feel sorry for this guy having to use that!
