Only certified standalone extenders and the Xbox360 support this (awesome) bit of technology. It's not about the 360 or how it's better or worse in the console market. The article is just stating it would be silly to slam 320 bucks on a MCE-only device when a 200$ device can do the same and more. (Albeit noisy as hell).

(Also you comparison with the 360 and the ps3 is silly. You don't need the prem. perse .. so that's 200 .. PS3 wireless adapter is shit .. I was a fan of the standalone extenders until the XBox360 came out ... which most likely will be upgradeable to next extender version (unlike many of the previous standalone units were) ... and it includes DVD with upscaling abilities that this standalone doesnt appear to include at all. Personally, I'm hoping MS offers up a BR drive like the previous HD drive at a loss to compete.

As for noise, not much to do for the optical drive noise but regularly spraying air through the unit to clear out dust helps keep the cooling fans quieter (just be careful not to damage them).

fyi, the arcade bundle on Amazon comes with HDMI ($279)

ScareyJ

Comments on D-Link DSM-750 wireless Media Center Extender finally shipping

>it's pretty hard to see why you wouldn't just nab an Xbox 360 Arcade to do the same thing

becuase :
A: this will still work after 6 months
B: this doesnt sound like a hoover
C: ths has wlan
D: this consumes 1/6th of the electricity.
E: this is acceptable in a living room not owned by a gamer.
F: this is not a game console trying to be a mutltimedia device and failing.

I could go on , but it gets boring.

pfromg

Comments on D-Link DSM-750 wireless Media Center Extender finally shipping

Response:
A. New XBOX's (the new name designations with Arcade, Pro, etc.) no longer have overheating problems, which was the major cause of RROD, and therefore are completely reliable. When are you people going to let go?

B: It is extremely quiet with no DVD in the drive. I agree, when its spinning, its loud, but not when in MC mode.

C: WLAN adapter can be had for $59, but for sure its not going to be as good as the WiFi on this unit.

D: The XBOX doesnt consume alot of electricity when not playing a game. People seem to think the max wattage usage is always the average, but it isnt. You have to draw that power to actually use it, and there is little draw in MC mode.

E: What the hell does that even mean? There are plenty of people who have game consoles in their living rooms purely for playing media and movies (PS3 mostly) and an occasional game. Wii's, PS3's, and for those a little more savvy, an XBOX MC setup with their PC.

F: The XBOX game console is one of (if not) the best MCE available. It doesnt fail at that."

really? I have an xbox 360 and its MCE support is honestly crap. You want to watch your HD media via MCE on your xbox/TV? Better have encoded it in VC1 with WMAPro 10, or you can kiss 5.1 audio goodbye, because that is the ONLY CODEC THE XBOX360 SUPPORTS FOR FULL SURROUND SOUND.

While the 360 will play h.264 & divx encoded files in an avi container via the dashboard, I do NOT consider this as part of its media center extender functionality, because it does not support these formats while actually using it to connect to windows media center. That kind of defeats the purpose of keeping your movies archived and accessible in a wonderful interface such as that provided by the MyMovies Media Center plugin.

Don't have ethernet cabled to your livingroom, and must use wireless? Be carefull with your HD encodes, because 802.11g will get bandwidth capped fairly easily. An 802.11n adapter could easily fix this, but if Microsoft has one in the works, I haven't heard anything about it.

Bottom line: Until microsoft decides to add better codec support to its flagship Media Center Extender for HD content, I'd rather use a standalone appliance that allows me to keep my files in a standard, non-proprietary format whilst maintaining full HD & 5.1 audio, thanks.

daelic
