Nokia WiMAX N810 appears in the wild

The WiMAX version of Nokia's N810 internet tablet has already popped up on Nokia's European site, lending creedence to all those whispers about a CTIA debut tomorrow, and now we've got units showing up in the wild, which is probably a good sign. There were apparently some other shots of this bad boy on Flickr, but they've since been removed -- let's hope tomorrow brings us some official beauty shots, eh?

I hope not. Why would you update this piece of rubbish with wimax? Outdated hardware, slow cpu, crap application base, bad support if any, run by a weak open source community, prepare to have laggy internet browsing, bad/choppy in browser youtube videos and any type of flash for that matter, useless vga camera that might as well not be there becasue it sucks with gizmodo, prepare to downsize all your movies one by one to make it slightly playable with mplayer, full internet in my pocket my ass. Save your money unless you think using wimax and skype is cost effective for you, rather than just using a normal cellphone to make a call. WASTE OF MONEY. oooo, its linux and open source, if you called that piece of sh*t maemo a operating turd, then maybe - big deal anyway - good luck cross-compile apps to it end-user.

Well, mex, I hope you know that you don't have to cross-compile. This machine runs UNIX, and UNIX wouldn't be complete without a c compiler. You can compile things on the unit, as well as using interpreted languages.

Is it a waste of money? Maybe for people who don't want what it does... but you haven't shown one alternative that beats it for even some categories, so it's hard to think that it's a waste of money for those who do really want what it offers.

A touch screen, 1GB space, a miniSD slot, WiFi, SIM support, Skype, a Webcam, stand, GPS, over 100 downloadables, UNIX OS, and a full web browser, and now, WiMAX support. Doesn't sound like your typical piece of crap, eh? I have an N800 myself, and I love it to death, especially for the little I paid for it (~$240).

wow really, a internet broswer you say, because I really need to find a wifi spot to make a international call to my african brothers - i guess if your a twitter freak, and have to tell everyone every breath you take - good 4 you. by the way, if you read my early post properly, you wouldn't have bothered mentioning its pathetic webcam. A stand - wow - revolutionary. GPS you say, you have to pay extra for the worst gps software in the world, don't bother mention free maemo mapper because you need a internet connection to figure out your directions. Don't get me started on the N800 brick either. WASTE OF MONEY AND TIME.

As someone who owns an n800 and loves it.... mex makes some good points. The architecture is dated and very faulty (video bandwidth reasons.) The camera is useless even for video conferencing, and the browser takes forever to load (though I do have adblock installed, so thats part of it.) Its software community is small, but I wouldn't say its horrible. (Though one thing I do hate is needing 20 different repositories installed for the complete selection of programs.)

My N810 was stolen (!!) a few weeks ago. I have an opportunity to purchase something else having direct experience with the N810 and an iPhone (other adult in the house is a Mac person.)

I will be buying a new N810.

The browser isn't much slower than my desktop. The 3rd party software is decent. I enjoyed using Canola and pretty much used it near-daily. I never got much use out of the GPS, but then never really encountered a situation where I needed it. It was accurate and responsive once it acquired the satellites (which took too long, imho). It connected to my cheap and small cell phone to provide Edge access when I wanted it. As a portable media player, it was decent. Yes, I had to transcode down the movies to make them play well, but then I also needed to transcode them down to fit more than two on the 6GB memory card I had in it. I found that the quality was decent at 500MB per movie.

As for WiMax -- uh... who cares? Where in the heck can you get WiMax in the US? Rates are around $55/mo for Sprint's upcoming version. I pay less than that for cable broadband and I'm not going to pay for both at the same time. Better to just buy a 3G phone (we have 3G in Tampa) with AT&T's $20/mo data plan and tether the Nokia to it. Which, btw, is a strength--being able to use any cell or wifi signal without regard to provider.

You know, I like my N810, I dial up on Sprint network vis bluetooth DUN for $15.00 per month, unlimited! It does everything I want it to do and it does it well. As for the web browser, Virtual memory is turned off by default ( don't know why), it needs to be turned on and give it all 128MB, huge performance difference..

You just use wifi then or pipe it to your 3G phone via bluetooth. Might not be the nicest mobile www, but it sure as hell beats all the competition in this size class. Actually nothing comes even close.

This is a serious attempt at eating into the iPhone market, but with the 3G model out next month, I don't think this is a goer. This mini qwerty keyboard is useless - typing with 2 thumbs will be a nightmare.

It looks clumsy. Nokia should have dropped the slide and gone for a big qwerty on the touch screen instead.

It has a large touch screen keyboard as well and has for some time. I happen to really love my N810. Is it perfect? No, but its a wonderful peace of hardware that I use everyday to keep up to date. I also have a N95 which I tether my 810 to. Everything I have read on here so far seems to be from people that haven't actually held one in their hands for more than 10 minutes. Also as for the slide out keyboard. Once you get used to it you can really fly on it. Sad how people just don't have a clue.

Yup - I've been righted - the qwerty keyboard touch screen looks ample - bigger than my iPhone one anyway. I used to have a qteck 9000 and found that keyboard tricky
