KNC M-700 PMP swipes some Nokia 5310 looks
It's a little sad when a "unique" entry in the PMP market means knocking off Nokia design (here we have a sterling example of the 5130) instead of Apple. That said, the M-700 from KNC seems to be a decent unit, with a 2.6-inch widescreen display, 400MHz processor and codecs galore -- including DivX and XviD. There's 4GB of storage built in, but no word on price or expandability.

Maybe they should change the company name to KncKoff?

It's a 5130 ripoff because it has red stripes on the side? That's a bit of a stretch, isn't it?
Tinu @ Apr 6th 2008 1:16PM
Angular bezel, orange stripes on them, plus those 3 buttons!
L @ Apr 6th 2008 8:54AM
No offense - but have you actually SEEN a 5310?

Damn, this is getting old and boring. Every time someone puts something new out, you dumb-asses rush to find something similar and claim it's a copy.
See how much more credible proper english make you look? Grammar and punctuation are your friend, my friend.

The market is screaming for a DIVX/XVID portable personal media player.
The Creative ZEN was close. But what killed it for me was that the XVID files had to be re-rendered for the player. SUXORS!!!
Build a player that can natively play XVID on the fly without conversion and I'll buy it in a second. I want the ability to just drag and drop a file.
fred @ Apr 6th 2008 9:22AM
This is what tech "news" has degenerated into. A bunch of armatures whom have turned into the design police. How God awful shallow have we become where a devices merits are somehow outweighed by some stupid physical element that may casually resemble a design element on another device?
Have you people seen your TV, your computer mouse, car, house, chair, printer, pencils, and lamps? I bet you can pick all types of stuff that happen to look like *GASP* another mouse, car or whatever. Do you toss your cookies when you see how one looks a little like another, like some of you seem to do on a fricken daily basis on this site?
I cannot believe that this stupid point could ever be made by rational adults. It has too many of the hallmarks of something that stupid teenagers or college kids would be using as a supposed valid point in which to bash a device or product.
Can you imagine if idiots like the person who wrote this article had lived back during the days of the portable cassette players:
"OMG!!! The Awia 56h-5434f has soooo totally ripped off the Sony f45-22 by having the Play button next to rewind. and look, the batteries load in the back too! cant they ever think of something original?"
Fricken idiots! The tech would would be much better off without this stooges writing about them
chickenator @ Apr 6th 2008 11:42AM

it's Aiwa.

No kidding, by this standard, what isn't a knockoff?

My Archos 605 wifi can play almost all Xvid and Divx files I trow to him without any problems and with an awesome resolution. The 4GB version is like US$200.
Kieran @ Apr 6th 2008 11:29AM
I don't know how any of you could think that this isn't a knockoff of the 5310, it looks jsut like one and it's obvious that it isn't a mere coincidence. Just look at it ffs, it practicly is one minus the keypad. Fucking 'tards.
TubeTop100.com @ Apr 6th 2008 11:36AM
Yeah and Steve Jobs is a Dr Phil knockoff without a moustache.
An your genitalia are a knockoff of mine, except smaller and minus the balls.
skyline_gtr777 @ Apr 6th 2008 4:17PM
You're an arrogant prick, and an immature one at that. I don't have a clue who the fuck Dr. Phil is, and Steve Jobs has nothing to do with this unless you idolise him so much that you have to bring him into every conversation you have, whether it be on the internet or *gasp* real life.
Also, because you seem so intrested in my genitalia, my balls are massive compared to you and your mangina.
Kieran @ Apr 6th 2008 4:19PM
That last comment was by me btw, Firefox seems to keep remembering my old name instead of this one.
omyjosh @ Apr 6th 2008 11:35AM
This is absurd. How can you say that it isn't a knockoff? The only difference is that the 5130 has a num pad. They have the same 3-button lay out, and exactly the same color scheme. Have YOU even seen a 5130?
mcartr @ Apr 6th 2008 12:40PM
I love how in the first sentence suddenly all devices with a prominent screen made BEFORE the iPhone/Touch are deemed irrelevant and everything made after the iPhone is considered a knock-off of the apple product if it has a screen and minimal buttons. And the 5310 is a PHONE. I dont know if you missed the memo but being a phone and having a number pad taking up 1/2 the face != being a PMP with a screen taking up the entire face.
Damn engadget... first you cover stories "wondering" why people cover up the front screen on their razr's or how they hold it upside down and now this?
If you are going to criticize something do it right.
In my opinion "it is a little sad" when a tech blog puts down gadgets for unsupported/totally distorted reasons.
Yes I know it is a blog and they are entitled to their opinions, but this is ridiculous.
Valgas @ Apr 6th 2008 11:53AM
Cowon . That's the brand name you need to search for when you're shopping for a PMP. Cowon A3 or the D2.
SuperDre @ Apr 6th 2008 12:03PM
Hmm.. it doesn't look anything like the nokia, and especially not like the crappy (ripped-off, non-original) iPhone.. so what's your point?
hwoarang27 @ Apr 6th 2008 12:44PM
The bigger crime here is not that its a 5310 look alike, but its that companies are actually still making sole purpose PMP's.
stunta @ Apr 6th 2008 1:01PM
The article says its sad that this is not an Apple knockoff. If it was indeed an Apple knockoff, the article would still have had a negative tone. Some of these engadget articles seem like they were written by some ignorant teenage Apple fanboy who hugs his macbook while sleeping.
A lot of the posts here are good posts on engadget. But one or two articles like these just ruin the day.
Steffen Jobbs @ Apr 6th 2008 1:18PM
I certainly hope that when the SDK applications are released for the iPod Touch/iPhone that there is some sort of application such as Perian that will allow playback of DivX/XviD files. I wonder if such an application uses a lot of processing power. It always seemed like such a waste for iPods only being allowed to play such a small variety of video files.
Back to devices being knock-offs of other devices. As fred said...How many ways can you make something different if it's got a certain size screen and uses fairly standard industry parts, keep costs within a certain amount and supposed to look decent enough to appeal to the mainstream? Devices are going to look similar and that's how it is. Knock-off or not, as long as it works better then that should be good enough to make it stand out.
The M-700 looks good and hopefully it plays well. If they make it inexpensive, then all the better.
BigDaddyM @ Apr 6th 2008 1:46PM
I figured Engadget would say it is an iPhone rip off or something...

Engadget you put 5130 :P
YankeeDooda @ Apr 6th 2008 2:06PM
come on people, give it up already. people at engadget spend all their time looking at technology, i think they'd know a bit more than some little upstarts who think they're big by trying to trash someone on their own site. if you happen to look at other sites as well instead of only trashing engadget, you'd see perhaps that pmptoday also covered this and also deemed it to be a knockoff. also, this isn't the first time knc has released a product uncannily similar to a namebrand(iriver's spinn, if any of us remember that).
rehs @ Apr 6th 2008 2:18PM
doesn't knc rhyme with kfc?

I think you meant "amateurs"? Anyway, yeah you have some good points. But you gotta get your undies out of a bundle.

PMPs, like automobiles, are women...unless your Archos is transgendered...

(Laughing) What the hell do you think you are, a schoolteacher? As if I really cared that I did not use correct punctuation... (continued laughing) Let me see if I have this correct; You will type up a replying comment if some one refuses to agree with you and/or your statement, they will then comment in reply to your original post. Rather amusing. However you are such a pompous individual relying on false authority, you believe it is your job to correct my grammer usage, yes? That is quite interesting. I am glad I am not very educated. Individuals like yourself hardly comment on topic. Is this not a form of social darwinism?
Or am I just an uneducated prick?
