Light-emitting wallpaper runs your lamps right out of a job
Looking for a fanciful way to dress up your room even more after tossing in a set of ASCII Curtains? Fret not, as designer Jonas Samson has crafted light-emitting wallpaper that's sure to go over better than that solar iteration you tried years ago. Currently, the technology behind the invention has yet to be divulged, but all those tidbits should get clarified when it goes on display at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan. We do know, however, that it removes the need for bulbs in areas that just require basic lighting, and judging by the shots on the creator's own website, designs could be lit in part, in whole or not at all. Still, don't write those fixtures off just yet -- you do care about resale value, right?

Very Cool!
rv @ Apr 13th 2008 1:32PM
As the fixtures inventory, you would depreciate fixtures, not write them off. Depending on the method, it will either be higher, lower, or the same as market value.
rv @ Apr 13th 2008 1:34PM
*aren't inventory
Esat Dedezade @ Apr 13th 2008 1:34PM
I agree it looks awesome.
Does this remind anyone else of the entrance to the mines of moria when the ancient runes glow in the moonlight?

Yeah, I can't wait until the first hackers start flying ghosts around their buds' rooms ;-)
Shane @ Apr 13th 2008 7:42PM
It looks exactly like shining a theatrical lighting instrument with a gobo on a wall. I'm not going to call fake but it sure looks like this could be done with existing technology rather than some form of new lighted wallpaper...

happy_penguin @ Apr 13th 2008 1:14PM
Who cares. He deserves whatever happens for hanging up a My Chemical Romance poster. :p

Uhm, I'm sorry happy_penguin, but there seems to be a tongue constantly hanging from your mouth.

Yeah and he's sticking it out at the shitty music.
happy_penguin @ Apr 14th 2008 12:15AM
I'm just poking fun, hence the :p. (I don't enjoy unwarranted seriously negative comments.)
But I really don't like that music. I stop short of calling it shit. If someone enjoys it, good on ya. Enjoy!

This. Is. Awesome. If it could be transparently applied to already painted walls and be relatively easy to install - and affordable - I could see this as being a HUGE hit.

That's your fault for not being Dutch while this product's designer is!
Smart People Play Tuba @ Apr 13th 2008 2:19PM
So, what's the manufacturer trying to "say" with that sad-looking model sitting against the wall?
Who wears their hood up indoors anyway? He looks like he's waiting for a bus.
Keith @ Apr 13th 2008 2:35PM
Something smells fishy to me here. Why in all three pictures (2 through 4) of the tree/bird shown at the top of this article, is the guy posed *exactly* the same. If those were really 3 separate pictures, the guy would have moved a little bit in each one. I smell a photoshop job, here.
Steve @ Apr 13th 2008 2:47PM
You're clearly and idiot. Kindly turn in your computer and report for termination.

Jonas was my fiance's roommate for a while. Here's a hint... he worked with light-emitting flat nanotubes. Probably just the inspiration for it though.
and no, he doesn't listen to any of those bands you guys listed. He listens to C-mon and Kypski, of course. Hi Jonas!

Hi David,
How are you? Say hello to Cathy to me!

Some of his other works, namely the freestyle blowmoulding looks really cool as well

Not mentioned was that this technology requires so little current, as demonstrated here, it can actually run off the differential voltage between one's armpits (well, as long as you're leaning against it with both pits, are taking lithium, are wearing an electroconductive hoodie and aren't using Ban Roll-on with SurgeProtection™)
radiant @ Apr 13th 2008 4:15PM
something is janky about this. i am a designer, and i love this concept but i have searched and searched and searched for more info on this tech, (a client wants it BAD). because if it REALLY is what it claims to be there are more than enough light AND furniture AND home accessory companies with PLENTY of cash to throw at this to own it and distribute as an exclusive. and like someone said earlier this has been around awhile, but looking far and wide on the interwebs i keep seeing the same 5 or so pictures of this "art" and he doesn't return emails. i think it's screen-printed backlit canvas panels and nothing more, if this really is what it claims i have a VERY tough time believing that more than a year later it's still nothing more than the same 5 images, not a single write up about any of the exhibits, merely re-prints of the same original press release. sorry to be a fun-hater.
Chris @ Apr 13th 2008 6:37PM
Incorrect use of the term 'janky'.
bazooka @ Apr 14th 2008 2:19AM
uh, GrammarMasterChris go check urban dictionary, and you'll see definition #3 state
"Janky - adjective used to describe a person, place or thing which is questionable..."

Wallpaper it isn't ..
jon @ Apr 13th 2008 5:00PM
i bet it uses the super secret technology called "electroluminescent sheet." you can find cut-out-your-own-design letter sized EL sheets in white and blue-green pretty easily.
bazooka @ Apr 13th 2008 6:27PM
the sheets i've seen are limited in size, less than 20 x 30 inches if i recall. great for small applications, but not for covering something large like a wall.
Deed @ Apr 13th 2008 5:28PM
Ah, I was beginning to wonder when I'd see more about this technology. I've seen this sort of stuff in the news a while ago, and it's seemingly made using those flexible polymer-based circuits that have recently started to surface. The news report showed wallpaper that would essentially blind you, but this looks like a very stylish application of the technology.
Alphamacaroon @ Apr 13th 2008 6:57PM
I'll eat my hat if this actually exists. I smell a Steorn-type hoax here...
Atlanta Resident @ Apr 13th 2008 8:08PM
This looks a lot like something Disney added last year to the Haunted Mansion at Disney World. They have wallpaper with eyes that glow white and turn on and off like they are blinking. They look like white LEDs or EL elements.
spacegravity4me @ Apr 13th 2008 11:36PM
ok, it's great and all, but unless it my oled wallpaper that can show color video and be my tv, it's not my holy grail. It's still cool, but it doesn't quite get a cigar. Closer though, and definitely a step in the right direction.
syno @ Apr 14th 2008 9:39AM
really cool !:o
it might be popular soon.
