This is based off of the PMW-EX1, which received rave reviews for picture quality and color representation. This is a great line of HD camcorders. I believe the only differences between this and the EX1 are the interchangeable lenses, the shoulder mount, and the eyepiece magnifier (which is actually really cool, I wish I had that for my EX1).

Mr. Gremlin

Comments on

It depends on what you mean by "tops." The HVX does 1080 in 24p which looks as close to film as I've seen from a prosumer camera and Final Cut natively supports the P2 card. That said, the HVX does not have interchangeable lenses and only has a 1/3" CCD. Of course, it's less than half the price reported here, so, ya' know, there's definitely a place in the indie film market for the HVX.

iago

Comments on

I disagree with you iago.

The EX1 is by far a better camera than the HVX. Just like how RED ONE won't be stable enough to be a sole camera for probably 2 more years, it'll take 2-3 years from release to get scarlet as flawless as it is in all of our fantasies. Even Ted admits this fact. Openly admits it. "All specs subject to change... Count on it" remember?

EX3 is a bloody amazing camera for the pricepoint. It is a B-roll or Unit 2 camera. Its purpose is not to revolutionize studio film making. It wouldn't have a $3000 price tag if it was. Plus this camera is like the RED ONE, in that from initial release, it'll probably be 2-3 years before it becomes fully functional. They'll practically ship prototypes, like the did with RED ONE, meant to be upgraded.

EX3 blows all comparable cameras out of the water.

Andy

Comments on

I agree with Mr. Gremlin that the EX3 is basically the same camera as the EX1 except for the Interchangeable lens system, the shoulder pad and the viewfinder. I do however like the 60GB hard drive add on (they should/could have made it bigger, like say 500GB).
Another appealing factor is the re-arranging of the buttons. The EX3 is a beast that has blown all other contenders out of the water, as correctly stated by Andy. But I don't think that the $13,000 MSRP will hold. Here's why: I was talking with a very reliable guy at B&H Photo and he told me that they will carry the EX3 in September for $9995 or $10,995.
B&H Photo, in keeping with their tradition of very competitive prices, had the EX1 for $6500 when everyone was selling it for around $9000.
If Sony actually prices the EX3 for $13,000, the EX1 will sell and the EX3 will have trouble moving off the shelves at that price, because, once again, as Mr. Gremlin stated, they are basically the same camera.
Now if the EX3,on the other hand is priced too low, then the EX1 will not sell because people will rush for the EX3 instead. The EX3 also cannot be priced at $8000 because Canon's XLH1 is priced at that figure, and we all know by now that the EX3 is a much better camera. So I figure that the guy at B&H Photo is right about B&H Photo carrying it in September for $9995 or $10,995. Now at that price, the 'right' people will go for either the EX1 or the EX3.

Cody Stanton

Comments on

Well Kids?

Sony,JVC,Pansonic and Canon are gonna be getting it up the Yazoo! from RED ONE. The picture quality is not comparable imo. The EX1 uses a fantastic fujinon fixed lens and uses SxS expresscard media that can be plugged into any new PC laptop or macbook pro for very speedy transfers. The chip size is 1/2 opposed to 1/3 and they are very comparable in price. "

For starters on this one. I've been on shoots where the b-roll footage i was getting off an HVX ran toe to toe with a PMW-355 XDCAM HD. Do the people who write this stuff use these cameras? As for SxS... try hitting the button on an EX1 while in preview mode and see how quickly it takes for the camera to start recording... now try that same thing on an HVX. Resolution wise, the EX1 will trump the HVX but it's not nearly as substantial as people seem to claim. Color resolution wise, the workflow of having to transcode footage to gain color space can be annoying for some and you aren't gaining anything extra in the first place. The HVX200A and the EX1 are about the same in sensitivity; give me the additional color resolution any day of the week...

"HVX200 doesn't do native 1080 24p. It does 1080i 24p. This means that its 1/3 inch sensors only have a vertical resolution of 540 pixels, and the HVX200 has to upres to get 1080i. EX1, and even better, EX3, both do native 1080 24p."

1080 24p IS native on the HVX, it's recording a 1920x1080 24p signal into a 1080i stream like the DVX did with miniDV. You are confusing the process here on so many levels. The resolution problem you are speaking really has nothing to do with the cadence of storing the 1080p signal in a 1080i stream. It has to do with the resolution of the HVXs chips. The process goes from the chip into the camera and processed into a signal which than is recorded within the 1080i stream. bleh.

and lastly... this one is the best...

"Slap an SLR adapter and put the basline Cooke S4's on this thing, and it'll beat the shit out of even Panasonic's infinitely commendable 500 model."

So what you are saying is to put an intermediate SLR 35mm style adapter on the EX3? and you will achieve better image quality than a 2/3" sensor using glass (ya know those 10k lenses from Fujinon and Canon) designed specifically for the camera? You can't be serious. If you stop pixel-pushing for just a second you'd realize that the amount of pixels that show up in your NLE really doesn't matter if you've chosen to throw a gigantic piece of ground glass in front of it. In my experience, i'd rather have the 2/3" sensor in the 500 than the 1/2" sensor in the 355... this isn't even factoring in the crop factor when using the extensive line of 2/3" HD quality lenses available on any XDCAM camera.

13,000 for this camera makes no sense... they seem to have reduced the price so the camera is viable... to a point.

Kyle Doris
