The significance is that they've achieved mixing reality and animation (like movies) AND doing so with live animation (like video games) AND live reality (like.... well, reality).

The fact that this isn't pre-recorded cinematics is what's amazing. It's live fake reality. Next up: stereoscopic contact lenses that allow this live fake reality to be constant, like actually being in the same room (or appearing so) as your friend in Europe. I'm sure this and the upcoming fiber optic "The Grid" internet will make this all too creepily possible soon.

dg

Comments on Flapi: YDreams' augmented reality mascot

Well sorry but they've achieved such 'live animation" for years (maybe a decade) already, many science museum displays for kids already have that running for years too.
I just don't see anything new apart from perhaps the shadows on real 3D objects, but as I previously stated I'm not sure they aren't cheating a bit with that and pre-calculated the legs 'objects'.

Wwhat

Comments on Flapi: YDreams' augmented reality mascot

pretty cool how it continues the animation when going behind people. Il so like the fact that the shadows fall correctly even over uneven surfaces. tis will be a big boon for movies and casual games. imagine the kids babysitter on the BIG LCD's of the future interacting in real time with you and them. recognizing them and carrying on conversations.
