Honda nav system helps you steer clear of crime, just like your momma taught you

Honda has a new GPS navigation system for Japan that taps into the police database and points out seedy areas on the map. The device can point out specific locations that cars have been stolen or broken into in the past, as well as generally sketchy districts, which basically means that if you weren't paranoid before you got this installed, you certainly will be afterwards. Honda is launching the service today, and we're sure criminals the world over are already wondering what one of these nav systems will go for on the black market.

I had an idea like this- basically a program for GPS-enabled devices to tell you your risk of death based on where you were. Turn down the wrong alley, and a "Warning Will Robinson" goes off. You could enter details too, like "skydiving" too see if you really wanted to take the chance. I called it the "Death-o-meter"

Isn't this just going to generate more crime?

I mean, if we're talking about trying to help the average citizen avoid the "seedy" areas, then criminals will use this technology to judge where the those citizens are parking their cars now as a result of the system's suggestions. It also gives criminals information on what areas are being focused on by police, which is tantamount to tuning into the police radio frequency.

This just sounds like a bad idea all around. It puts fear into the law-abiding person and enables the outlaw.

Seriously- mine totally sucks. I drive over a 3 year old road every day where I look like I'm flying through the air for about 1/2 mile. My car's got 07 maps.

If it can't take me to a bridge properly how should I trust that I'll be kept out of whatever area Vic Mackey from The Shield is working in?

Whatever city you live in, you should already know which areas to avoid. This is where "common sense" comes in. However, when visiting an unfamiliar area, it can be quite easy to accidentally find yourself in the middle of a scary area, afraid and not knowing whether a left turn will help you get out or take you deeper into danger. I think this would really only be useful to visitors or newcomers to a particular area, but in those cases, it could be very valuable indeed.

I already have a similar system that keeps me from being a victim of crime. It was designed in the early 1900s, adopted by the army in 1911, and runs even when the car is off and the battery flat since it is fueled by .45 ACP. The best part is that there is no mounting hardware involved since I just keep it in the glove box.

This kind of reminds me of an idea I had, involving a carputer. This would really only work if everyone had the software but...

Imagine a GPS that you could hit a button when you spot a police officer and it sends it via internet to other GPSs. Then when you're driving you see on your GPS where other people marked police, and how long ago they were spotted (maybe symbolized by a fading color).
