Whilst the drivers are the face of the team, there is so much that goes into developing and preparing a F1 car. The sport has always been about technology and how we use it. Yes, the driver is important, but it has always been a team effort to get that car to the finish line first. As for driver assistance, I agree that this should be restricted, because there always needs to be a challenge of how much a person can extract from the technology on a track.

As a F1 fan, I want them to go further - send the challenge out, develop an alternative clean energy powerplant to race, have a regulation that enforces a maximum pollutant level. The formula needs to open up and allow for any type of clean energy - get rid of gasoline. When the sport had a less restrictive formula not long ago, you saw variations of powerplants (V8 vs V10 vs V12) that made the whole sport interesting because you were really involved in how the teams developed their technology (and salivating at the prospect of the technology flowing down into your own car in the future). Tightening the regulations just makes all the cars the same with only a few minor differences. I want to see the imagination of engineers open up to all the possibilities. Let's give the brightest engineers the chance to develop something wonderful for all of us.

One day we could see a new Cosworth-like company develop a great powerplant. It could also allow for new racing teams to enter by bringing in a new technology that has been developed by pioneers (like it was in the 60's and 70's) - the cost to join F1 is so prohibitive now that only large manufacturers have the resources to do it.

What else is on my list:
- Make the parts recyclable, to the extent that X% of the car has to be recyclable for alternative use of the material.
- Reduce carbon footprint - all teams should have a carbon limit. Think of all the flying they do around the world - I know it's not avoidable, but how about keeping a limit on it by reducing the amount of people and parts that get moved around? This could also arrest the cost of F1.

A good start F1, but let's do more.

AL

Comments on Formula One to introduce hybrid Kinetic Energy Recovery System in 2009

This is a great step in the right direction, which will eventually trickle down to consumer products. That's because the cars on the track aren't the biggest contributors to F1's non-green-ness. What about all of the transports, trucks, freight flights, passenger flights, generators, etc. that the teams use during a weekend, not to mention testing. Also, there are still hundreds of thousands of people who drive to the events each weekend. Making those elements of the sport greener would have a better overall effect (and less controversial) than introducing non-traditional elements to an already cluttered formula.

Al

Comments on Formula One to introduce hybrid Kinetic Energy Recovery System in 2009

f1 has been carbon neutral now for nearly ten years. a lot of people arent aware of this but its a sport thats been aware of the dangers of climate change long before the current media coverage.

granted its carbon neutral by offsetting its footprint, but I dont know of any other sports that can make this claim

loz Trowell

Comments on Formula One to introduce hybrid Kinetic Energy Recovery System in 2009

Nuke the whales. I think that they should grease the axles on these cars with Al Gore's blood. As far as a carbon footprint? I guess only practical / mechanical problems make them be _not_ the preferred way of storing excess energy. I was thinking of getting a generator + using the creek going by my house to get some electricity back, but maintaining a couple of very large lead-acid batteries just doesn't strike me as a good idea.... flywheels would be much cooler.

nikster

Comments on Formula One to introduce hybrid Kinetic Energy Recovery System in 2009

This doesn't have to be about making the cars completely green. As with many things in F1, it's about developing new technology that will find it's way into road cars in the future, where it will make a big difference.
