Blu-Ray is in a one man fight and still losing. Does the Blu-Ray camp really think people will pay $700? For $700 I'd rather just buy myself another HDTV. These prices are crazy. You can buy a standalone Blu-Ray SATA player for $129. Does it really take $580 in hardware to decode Blu-Ray? If Panasonic want to try and sell their player at some enormous markup, let them. They'll probably get slapped down by low sales as people buy from their competitors. That is what competition is all about after all.

And no I doubt it costs anywhere near that much to include the features they do. The PS3 manages to pack a lot more hardware into a device costing $400. Even if we assume some kind of console subsidy and call it $500, it's still $200 cheaper than this standalone.

Of course retailers don't have to pay attention to the MSRP and I fully expect you'll see this things selling for $450 or less before the year is out.

DrXym

Comments on

700 Bucks? Sure this player is too expensive, but that shouldn't be an occasion for people like you to spread lies. I've got some news for ya. That $125 HD-DVD drive was heavily subsidized by Toshiba, just as the PS3 was by Sony, only even more so. The PS3 is now roughly break-even. Also, that $125 HD-DVD drive was just as crippled in the audio department as Blu-ray players, and it didn't even do 1080p! Talk about crippled. Anyway, don't be surprised to see this player considerably cheaper come the holidays.

BluRayIsKicking

Comments on

Well what would you write if you spent your days mourning your three HD-DVD players and your 5 dozen HD-DVD movies you blew last years tax return on?

Poor sap, someone ought to just put him down, he doesn't need to suffer any more...

BlowURmindBowel

Comments on

Hehee.

For $700 Sony is just thumbing their nose at all of those Blu-Ray advocates and potential customers who said that once the war is over, Sony et. al. would focus on taking on DVD and Blu-Ray prices would come down to a *reasonable* level.

Hahaa!

They went up!

I said it then and I'll say it again, the format war was good for consumers as it made competing formats price chop for customers.
