And no I doubt it costs anywhere near that much to include the features they do. The PS3 manages to pack a lot more hardware into a device costing $400. Even if we assume some kind of console subsidy and call it $500, it's still $200 cheaper than this standalone.

My list of why the BD-50 is a better device for a dedicated home theater:

1. This is a stand alone device and should be completely silent. The PS3 is pretty quite but this device probably will not be heard ever.
2. Internally decodes all audio formats and can send them out over bitstream.
3. It has analog outputs.
4. IR remote control.

Cons for the BD-50
1. Expensive

Disclaimer: I am not nor have I every been a BluRay proponent, I own an XBOX360 and not a PS3, I did like the early stats of BluRay for software/computer applications, but in so far as a home movie player I really didn't care which format won. I'm just sick of the sore losers who backed HD-DVD kicking up such a ruckus over a non-issue, although I agree that this player is terribly overpriced, then again I don't see anyone justifying it... STFU!

For $700 Sony is just thumbing their nose at all of those Blu-Ray advocates and potential customers who said that once the war is over, Sony et. al. would focus on taking on DVD and Blu-Ray prices would come down to a *reasonable* level.

Just like the 360 and M$, Sony is subsidizing the cost of PS3 against lower future costs, game sales revenue and subcription revenues.

A 360 or PS3 without the margin subsidies that are basically given to BestBuy etal would be easily $799 or higher.
