Moshi's Zefyr MacBook cooler is way hot
If you haven't faced MacBook Air overheating issues, you're clearly in the minority, and regular ol' MacBook users have been faced with plenty burnination of their own. While there are plenty of laptop coolers out there, none have been so specifically designed to address these two perennial overheaters as Moshi's Zefyr. The aluminum heatsink setup has an "ultra-silent" USB-powered fan and is quite minimal, just concentrating on the MacBooks' problem spots up top. Even better for Air users: you won't be monopolizing your lone USB plug to work it. Zefyr is available now for $75 in silver or black.

MacBooks don't really get that hot. We should be looking at MacBook Pros. Mine has fried an egg and then some.
gabe @ May 10th 2008 2:12PM
some bacon?
Gus @ May 10th 2008 2:15PM
some more eggs
clockwork @ May 10th 2008 2:16PM
i have a macbook and i also had to instal smcFanControl and keep the fan running at 5000rpm just so the CPU stays below 65°C, this is probably the best thing i have seen for the macbook, i need to get one so that my CPU and legs last a little longer without combusting...
Kurian @ May 10th 2008 2:35PM
And some.. ?
I think it lost him a nut or two.
Metayoshi @ May 10th 2008 2:40PM
I've never experienced a MacBook Pro overheating. It actually runs cooler than my PC notebook that idles around 70 degrees C.
Mikee @ May 10th 2008 4:11PM
I think it depends on the CPU in there. The Penryn's don't get that hot.
Technex @ May 10th 2008 4:38PM
@ clockwork
Man that's roasting!!! My Dell Inspiron 6400 never goes above 50C even under hard loads!
Whoa crazy!
mike @ May 10th 2008 9:17PM
Ok so let me get this straight. Some one makes a notebook cooler and sells it to Apple users and Apple users are all happy? These things are nothing new people...
Greg @ May 10th 2008 9:41PM
Yeah, my MacBook is actually cooler than most PC laptops I've used.
Jordan @ May 11th 2008 2:47PM
I haven't worked with many apple laptops, but one I used was way too hot, the other one I used seemed to be the coolest thing I have ever touched. Coolest meaning temperature that is...
Craig @ May 10th 2008 1:47PM
Overheating? Must be all those ports and jacks and features. Oh, wait.
L @ May 10th 2008 1:48PM
And it only bumps the MBA to normal-laptop thickness! Fantastic!
BigD145 @ May 10th 2008 1:54PM
And makes it not so sleek or able to fit in an envelope.
Kurian @ May 10th 2008 2:37PM
Notice that the MBA and the ordinary MB are both the same thickness after putting on the cooler! The MBA is a scam!
bootareen @ May 10th 2008 9:00PM
@kurian
I've been thinking, what if manufacturers tout a laptops thinness by taking away some parts, but in the end, you must add back all the parts externally to make the laptop run normally.
Ellianth @ May 10th 2008 1:49PM
Wow the macbook air gets hot? I didn't know that. I guess while they were gutting everything else they decided to get rid of the fan also :p.
Those coolers look kinda cool though.
JAmerican @ May 10th 2008 11:04PM
Yea almost as cool as the 360's external fan.
Jhongerkong @ May 10th 2008 2:07PM
This is one cool product...
Im here all week.
Gus @ May 10th 2008 2:16PM
are u gonna like the annoying in-laws or can u actually leave earlier?
Jhongerkong @ May 10th 2008 2:18PM
Am I going to like the annoying in-laws? What the hell?
Nomi @ May 10th 2008 3:05PM
ya, I read it several times...no idea what it means...
randompass @ May 10th 2008 3:33PM
I think he meant "be like the annoying in-laws"
Chase @ May 10th 2008 2:17PM
TROOOOOGGGGDOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
andres @ May 10th 2008 2:45PM
was a man, or maybe he was a dragon, or maybe he was a dragon man....
BUT HE WAS STILL TROOOOGGGDOOOOORRRRR!!!!
Decoy @ May 10th 2008 3:40PM
Burnination!
senyl @ May 12th 2008 9:47AM
Bonus points for using "Burination" in an article
Craig @ May 10th 2008 2:12PM
This steampunk-esque cooler is pretty much the exact opposite of Apple's design style.
James Daniels @ May 10th 2008 2:31PM
My MacBook is actually the sole cause of global warming. These look interesting.
Steve Jones @ May 10th 2008 3:44PM
Just a hunch, but I don't think it is.
Ian @ May 10th 2008 8:43PM
no way my MBP is way hotter than your MB. 170 degrees is kinda hot. on a side note do they make this for the MBP?
Twilight Elk @ May 10th 2008 2:35PM
Wow. Those are the coolest looking coolers I've seen; most of them take up the whole bottom space :D
Alberto @ May 10th 2008 2:47PM
Hey! I want one of those for my MacBook Pro. Is it taking too long?
spass @ May 10th 2008 2:49PM
Wait, USB powered?
How many USB does the MBA have again?
MeatyPi @ May 10th 2008 2:53PM
"Even better for Air users: you won't be monopolizing your lone USB plug to work it."
Reading helps avoid embarrassing yourself.
spass @ May 10th 2008 3:00PM
@MeatyPi
/sarcasm...
yes, there is just one USB , this is the problem.
Phoenix @ May 10th 2008 3:06PM
It has a passthrough.
Just don't try running anything TOO high powered.
Technex @ May 10th 2008 5:01PM
Yep, no USB fishtanks :(.
Sirius @ May 10th 2008 7:27PM
Actually I think it even cures the MBA's I-need-an-extension-cable-jz-to-connect-a-flash-drive problem... that pass-through port looks to be flush with the heatsink and sticks out from the MBA body... heh
Phoenix @ May 11th 2008 10:14AM
Yeah, it does seem to cure that issue.
Although there is still the question of whether or not there would be enough power
Hraefn @ May 10th 2008 2:57PM
Moshi Zephyr: It puts the "Air" into MacBook Air!
SimonRichards @ May 10th 2008 2:57PM
They should have integrated a USB hub at the nearside of the cooler, wouldnt take up any more space, and would give MBA owners at least a couple more USB ports to use!
Phoenix @ May 11th 2008 10:20AM
Hmm... The issue with this is that due to the power used by the fan you'd be limited to low power devices, and only one or 2 at a time.
torqueo @ May 10th 2008 3:12PM
Awesome. Just another thing to add onto the MBA that should have been there to begin with (sane heat management), which makes it as big or even bigger than most ultra-portables!
*hugs his ThinkPad X61s*
J @ May 10th 2008 3:13PM
Meh. This idea is nothing new...
Powersupport have been doing this for years since the G4 Alu powerbooks. Infact, I have one :P

bartoron @ May 10th 2008 3:28PM
If the Macbook Air overheats so much, then why does it have the word air in its name? You would assume that they would be able to have at least somewhat decent air circulation inside of that thing.
Time to revolt against the misleading product names!
torqueo @ May 10th 2008 3:51PM
Air can't be hot?
bartoron @ May 10th 2008 4:06PM
It can be, but hot air is bad for a laptop. :P
crescentdavid @ May 10th 2008 4:01PM
macbook Fire
SFO Kevin @ May 10th 2008 4:06PM
Damn!!! now i need two manila envelopes!!!....
