OCZ's DIY Gaming Notebook

We've seen this attempted a few times before, but it's hard to imagine OCZ's entry into build-it-yourself laptops will be any more successful. The new OCZ DIY Gaming Notebook is a 7 pound 15.4-inch backbreaker, which comes standard with an NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT video card, Intel PM965 northbridge, SATA support for hard drives, 8x dual-layer DVD burner, four USB 2.0 ports, ExpressCard and a fingerprint leader. The problem is that the "optional components" are WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0 and a TV tuner, with only the last of those being truly optional on a regular enthusiast laptop. It's nice of OCZ to provide documentation and a warranty for those who really want to get under the hood of a modern laptop, but we're guessing most gamers these days would give up a bit of a customization for a straight-up well priced performer. No word on price or availability.

I got this laptop for over a year right now! I bought it at a store in the Netherlands and it is exactly the same! I also had the choice between the HDD(160 or 200GB and 8 or 16mb), the TV-tuner, PCI-express card and CPU (hz). So i guess this isnt a new laptopt after all...

DIY laptops are so absurd. A DIY desktop I can understand. Such a huge variety of components and options. But a laptop's innards are so limited...

If you've ever had to break into a laptop before to change out parts, then you'd know why enthusiasts love DIY ones that make the laptop easier to take apart and change stuff....

I'd get it just for the ability to open it up easier...worth its weight in gold lol

It's actually a rebadged compal ifl90 or 91, also know as the sager np2090, or the voodoo ENVY M:153.

I am currently using one and it is fairly nice, though it is heavy... still pretty good performance overall

I see anyother failure in this, laptops are just too small for this to work successfully. I might as well customize a laptop with someone that can make a 17" screen for around the same weight with more power in it. Plus, I think gamming laptops are really for people who dont play the latest and greatest.

This is COMPAL IFL90 relesed May2007 with Santa Rosa Platform,
in January 2008 it was updated to Penryn processors and called IFL92,
Compal sells is to custom builder like Sager, Powernotebooks and many others who the rebrand it.
Vodoo even had it painted red an blue and were selling it for 3500 compare to everybody else 1500 for mid configuration.
Also you can buy it barebone(whitebook) and put in your cpu, mem, etc...

This is probably the result of thier acquisition of Hypersonic-PC last year. The "options" are much like what Hypersonic offered in some of their earlier models' pre-builds. Not very original, only satisfying a niche market, and (if any of you know Hypersonic) poor on the tech support if you encounter problems.

If they're trying to get a toe-hold on the gaming rig market they've started all wrong.

I bought this laptop June 2007, typing on it right now. Bought is for 900 euro's back then, including wifi and bluetooth, and i still have the option to add the tuner. The laptop kicks ass btw, score about 3500 on 3dmark06, plays TF2 like a charm and can do a bit of Bioshock. Features usbcharging while off, note that this is not iPod compatible.

Dude I have this and am typing this comment on it: a Sager NP2092 (aka Compal JFL92). Works great and Sager offers bluetooth and wifi for free. I love the finger print reader because you can launch different applications with each one of your fingers. It is a great notebook though! (I have 4GB memory, 80GB hard disk, Intel T9300 (T9500 a waste of a couple hundred bucks for .1GHZ) and all other options (except Microsoft Office, I just use Google Docs!)). Oh, one strange thing about this laptop is that the screen sometimes doesn't turn on when you open the lid, but if you open it again, it does.
