Metal Gear Solid 4 limited edition PS3 for North America detailed
Ha, seems our Japanese gaming overlords aren't the only ones looking down the retail barrel at the limited edition gunmetal gray MGS4 PS3. Sony's official Playstation.Blog is reporting that the MGS4 Limited Edition PS3 Hardware Bundle will be available exclusively from Konami.com for $600. For that you get a 40GB gunmetal PS3, matching DualShock 3 wireless controller, Metal Gear Online, an exclusive Blu-ray disc with 2-hours of additional content (making of documentary and look at Hideo Kojima's production team) and of course the MGS4: Guns of the Patriots Limited Edition game. Pre-orders from the "very limited supply" begin on Monday the 19th. Best set your alarms.

40GB PS3? That's a bummer. For 600 dollars...
I mean it was an 80GB, that actually might be alright....
BradVT @ May 16th 2008 1:22AM
Yeah, I could've swore that every other time they've mentioned this bundle it was an 80 gb model and I thought they said it would be 500 dollars. Kinda sucks if they decided to hike the price and drop the better model.
Ayman @ May 16th 2008 1:23AM
You know you can change the Hard drive to a 250GB or 500GB
http://www.gamespot.com/features/6176090/index.html
Dxw @ May 16th 2008 1:27AM
Yeah, but no PS2 compatibility.
BradVT @ May 16th 2008 1:28AM
I was right, Sony Style has a metal gear solid bundle with the 80gb model for 500 dollars, but its not "limited edition gunmetal gray". So they have two metal gear solid/PS3 bundles. Call me crazy but I'd rather have the cheaper bundle with the higher end PS3.
Michael @ May 16th 2008 1:40AM
Uh, apparantly a lot of folks here don't understand what "limited edition" means. Yes, you're getting the 40 GB PS3, but you (presumably) are also getting bragging rights that your PS3 is unique and that none of your neighbors have the limited edition, differently-colored model.
As Ayman has said, you can easily change out the hard drive for something much larger on the cheap. And as BradVT figured out, the bundle on Sony Style is a normal 80GB PS3 together with MGS4.
Big Ed @ May 16th 2008 1:47AM
@Michael
Yeah, you get to brag that your system has less features and has limited backwards compatibility, not to mention a smaller hard drive for $100 more than the 80 GB bundle.
Funke, Tobias Dr. @ May 16th 2008 2:47AM
The wikipedia page for PS3 has a chart that shows very clearly the difference between the 40GB and 80GB models. It isn't just HDD space:

caleb @ May 16th 2008 9:35AM
I think it's fantastic. I was really interested in this bundle, but could not wait for it once GTA4 came out. I knew I was going to regret pulling the trigger too soon, but it looks like there is going to be no regrets here.
S.Harris @ May 16th 2008 2:13PM
It does clearly say 40GB on the box shown...
Reader @ May 16th 2008 1:14AM
I like the color
(aren't you all glad to know that now?)
Ace b @ May 16th 2008 1:25AM
I'm telling ya,this can't be fully right.
I've gone to 8 different Gamestops in different areas.
I've actually talked to the Sony reps that inform GS about what their getting.
This has got to be a typo or something cause they have all said the gunmetal grey ps3 will be the 80.
Man I really hope this is a typo
dorphat @ May 16th 2008 2:58AM
This is an exclusive from Konami. Everyone else is getting the new 80GB bundle.
Bibbly53 @ May 16th 2008 1:29AM
If the 'steel' is a matte look, that will be sexy.
Larky @ May 16th 2008 1:36AM

I just went to Digg for the first time in 2 weeks to bury that submission.

I wish i could trade it in my current 40GB PS3...
Tony Rayo @ May 16th 2008 3:32AM
There is always paint =). I painted my launch system with 4 coats of "Ferrari Red" aka Pigment Red 254 + a protective clear layer after the warranty was up. Just remember to cover up anything you don't want to get painted (most importantly, the holes used for airflow =).
fuzzy @ May 16th 2008 1:57AM
Damn damn damn. What time will they go onsale?
So, on one hand, I want the cool color (not a dust magnet like the gloss), and I really want the limited edition of the game too (way better box art). But, is it worth it to pay $100 more for the inferior hardware?
I'm leaning towards "no" right now...
But damn that color is so sweet.
cellulitis @ May 16th 2008 2:02AM
Come on guys, just buy both and switch the insides. Geez...:)
teklikethis @ May 16th 2008 2:22AM
i heard that prices are dropping in june... so it will reach same price as the 360... but also coming with dualshock and mgs4... dunno about the colour/drive though
pznuts @ May 16th 2008 2:09AM
I'd rather get the glossy black, backwards comp., +40GB, -$100, and it matches the rest of my entertainment setup. Just not worth it for that much, no way I'm hooking up two playstations to one TV.
Dude @ May 16th 2008 2:18AM
Well you can always got to Sony Style and grab an 80GB model, with a Dualshock 3 and MGS4 for 499.99 USD in June. (Black, not gunmetal gray)
ph15h @ May 16th 2008 3:28AM
Screw that. I'm just going to buy the 80GB. I need me some PS2 Compatability. Guess I'll be going Sony Style.
Tarnation @ May 16th 2008 8:23AM
For once there is someone more evil than Microsoft. Sony congrats! When Microsoft released a "Limited Edition 360" for Halo 3 it was $50 more expensive for what seemed like nothing more than a special colored 20GB 360. It turned out that not only did you get the special colored 360, but it got the HDMI port earlier than than the white 20GB model plus a bunch of Xbox Live extras. So points to Sony for screwing their customers worse than Microsoft!

Garst @ May 16th 2008 10:44PM
You do realize the Xbox 360 Elite comes with a 120 GB drive not the puny 20 GB drive?
Vault @ May 17th 2008 1:57PM
It also comes with a limited edition foot long power brick.
ice2032 @ May 16th 2008 9:32AM
Does anyone know whether the 80GB MGS4 bundle, not the gunmetal, is coming to Best Buy or not? Or will it only be available through Sony Style?
Big$l1ck @ May 16th 2008 10:05AM
This bundle should be available at most major retailers. I know Gamestop is getting them. I would say that BestBuy will as well.
Big$l1ck @ May 16th 2008 10:00AM
Definatley a disappointment the 80GB model is greatly preferrable; and where is the extra $100 going to? Lets look at the math:
40 GB PS3 = $399.99 (anywhere)
Limited Edition MGS4 = $84.99 (GameStop)
Total = $484.98
40GB Limited Edition MGS4 PS3 Bundle = $599.99
Shipping according to Konami.com will be "Higher than normal..."
Current projections from UPS.com show a rate of appox. $27.76
Total = $627.75
Total Difference = $142.77
Now thats an expensive paint job.
Full Details can be seen at this link: http://www.konami.com/Konami/ctl3810/cp20111/si3327390/cl1/metal_gear_solid_4_limited_edition_playstation3_bundle
Also some comments on some other points:
Aceb - Unfortunately there is no error just check the link above for confirmation. The japaneese version was only 40GB as well.
cellulitis - You can't switch the insides. The 80GB boards are larger than those of the 40GB and thusly will not fit into a 40GB case; not to mention the fact that you would have to cut two more usb slots into the case to allow for the 2 additional ports. Hmmm spend $600 on a PS3 and the cut on it.... I think not.
Personally I think the standard 80GB bundle is the way to go.
Ben H. @ May 16th 2008 9:54AM
Does anyone have any idea how limited this thing is? Like how many units are being offered for sale in America? I'm thinking about picking one up to Ebay.
Big$l1ck @ May 16th 2008 10:06AM
Rumors is that its around 10,000 for North America
Vault @ May 17th 2008 1:58PM
Are you joking?
Big$l1ck @ May 19th 2008 4:24AM
No, I'm not. Did you think more or less?
zunq @ May 16th 2008 10:59AM
Smart move by Konami. They know the system will sell out at $600 or even $700 if they wanted to raise the price. People will pay for it much like the ones that paid $1000 at launch.
MarvinK @ May 16th 2008 11:38AM
Ya, it will sell--too bad it's so expensive and people are so stupid. The color is cool.
Marc @ May 16th 2008 12:20PM
I notice they have to translate GB to Gb for the.... dimmer americans
zerosozha @ May 16th 2008 7:14PM
Last I checked, Americans use GB for "gigabyte" as well.
Garst @ May 16th 2008 11:07PM
That is probably a typo. After all, there is a huge difference in size between a GB (byte) and a Gb (bit). 896MB to be percise. Although, I have no clue where this translation you speak of is. Everything on a PS3 box and in the article is referred to in bytes, nowhere is a bit mentioned.
Teddy @ May 16th 2008 11:26PM
They should call it the "Limited European Edition", the PS3 model for Americans who want to know how it feels to be a European PS3 buyer. I was hoping to avoid the glossy black PS3, but it looks like I'll just have to keep a microfiber cloth handy at all times for my 80GB, PS2 BC, memory card reader & $100 less (almost enough money for 2 more games) PS3 MGS4 model. I'll probably use a dust cover as well.
As for people thinking about eBay, remember what happened soon after the PS3 launched in 2006. You can be sure that a lot of people will know about this truly limited edition PS3 and you'll be lucky to get $500 for it.
John @ May 19th 2008 8:33PM
KONAMI SITE AND SERVER WERE NOT READY FOR THIS
wow.. i have been on the website since it went on pre-order at 3:23 pm pst and i have not been able to get mine ordered the server has been goin crazy locking up.. i now have 4 in my cart when you can only have one and it wont let me purchase until i remove the other 3 but it keeps locking up
i really hope Konami's lack of prep for a release like this does not hinder me from receiving mine
Pbear @ May 19th 2008 11:23PM
I finally got mine MGS4 limited gun-metal edition ordered. Took me 3 hrs to order this. Their server is not good! Let's see how much profit I can make out of this limited edition. I don't mind keeping it or definitely don't mind selling it for much higher price and buy the other bundle for better price. What to do what to do...
1. Keep it.
2. Sell it and make profit then get black bundle for cheaper price.
Big$l1ck @ May 20th 2008 1:50AM
What was the final price with Tax and shipping and all that jazz?
Russel Pepper @ May 20th 2008 1:54PM
The final price was $620.98 after S&H. The one caveat is that Konami is charging a $500 "Insurance Fee" when you order, bringing the total to $1,120.98. The fee is credited to your account when the order ships, but you are charged on your credit card up front for it. I guess this is to ward off people who don't really want it, but want to flip it.
And yes...it took FOREVER to get through last night but I got in.
Osiris @ May 20th 2008 12:37PM
Set my alarm for what! Sunday 11PM to Monday 8pm camping the Konami site refreshing the page every 15 minutes. Yes, I still went to work on Monday. No, I did not do any work. NO LUCK AT ALL! At around 6:30 Pre-order button showed up but everytime that I clicked it, I got a 503 error.
Deeznutz @ May 20th 2008 1:59PM
You guys are suckers for paying $$$, hahaha.
KaRmAChAnG @ May 20th 2008 7:43PM
Scoop! Managed to get my order through
Blue_Steel_00 @ May 20th 2008 7:58PM
Got mine too. I never had to refresh my internet browser so many times in one sitting. Damn 503 errors... All that just to navigate 6 pages.
Not sure what Russel Pepper is talking about though. I didn't get charged an "insurance fee".
tarheelrob @ May 30th 2008 10:04PM
I ordered mine today and it only took 5 minutes, they had a bunch of instructions having to do with your web browser, cookies and the cache. That may have been the problem when they first started but I had no problem today. I did not have to change anything either. I only got charged the $620.
