I'm not saying it's without fault-- it does, on occasion, do strange things that I can neither explain nor comprehend, but for the most part it is the most reliable piece of equipment in my household.

The remote does indeed look very odd to me, and in all truth, I was disappointed when we upgraded to the latest DVR and the remote was almost twice the size of the original, but it is not a dealbreaker. Test out a Tivo and tell me why it takes 1+ hours to complete a update of the guide data--or why with some of the newer models you cannot skip past commercials or record some shows, or the fact that Tivo's remote lacks a 30-second skip button (okay, I have not used a Series3 Tivo yet, so I may be incorrect on this point)

I love my 722 DVR. I had the HD crash in 2 different Time Warner Cable dvrs--very annoying--and now I have the ability to have external hard drives. "Some of the newer models can't record shows" - again, what are you on? Why does a $100,000 car catch on fire sometimes? They all do, and I imagine your Dish DVR's have their share of issues as well - you and the other guy that have one should talk.

My TiVo has a splendid 30-second skip. There's a button on the remote mapped to it. It doesn't say "30 SECOND SKIP" on it, is that why your mad?

I don't think you're a fanboy, you're just anti-Tivo.

And to comment on the story itself - for a "set-top line to grow stale", wouldn't that imply that it wasn't currently? Please. Dish, sell a Tivo and I'll drop cable. Just one question... to get fast upload in the states, don't it for most people require cable TV subscription or fiber? Both locations, where you normally can't set up a satellite receiver.

With both Slingbox and SlingCatcher build in, it would be perfect for home and the vacation home. Big package at home and small package away. Sling the extra channels and you get the same channels at the vacation home. "The count now...17 channels added yesterday morning. 10 channels removed last night. Another 5 removed tonight. Net gain 2 channels HOWEVER, two of the "new" channels required Cinemax subscription. So to most subs, net gain ZERO. Add to this that no HD has been spotted on 5 Star Max and Cartoon Network is 100% stretch-o-vision.... It's a NET LOSS of HD channel. I agree w/@tyler. The Dish interface has been hard to beat from the beginning. There can always be improvements, but what they have, Just Works.

Besides, I can't watch those 2 networks due to their marketeer's creed, "Blast the volume on the ads so they can hear it in the kitchen." I own a DVR. I pause to go to the kitchen. Even 3-seconds of 2x-3x volume before I can FF or skip is too much of an irratant. If a show looks interesting, I'll add it to my Netflix queue.

UniHD has a literal 3-second explosion to kick off their ad blocks. ABCFM? More HD stations added to my blocked list...

In the beginning of ExpressVu they were actually going to call it Dish Network Canada.

BTW after the general assembly that I wrote about I went and talked to the Sling guys and from the sounds of it, it will be awhile until we see the 722s.

From where I sit (and from what I saw) this unit will be worth the wait. :)
