Samsung's latest volley in the iPhone's general direction -- the
Instinct -- had been promised for a June launch, but beyond that we hadn't gotten a specific date. That changes today with news that we should all be able to run our fingers over the Instinct's glossy front (and back, and sides, and wherever else you should choose to do so) starting on the 20th of the month. Availability in all channels won't be guaranteed initially, but that's when Sprint wants to at least start the flow of Instincts into the market for an as-yet-to-be-announced price -- so get ready to either speed from store to store in search of your new love on day zero, or just remain nude in front of your computer and scope it out on Sprint's website.

Your company appears to be staffed by morons based on the rant you posted on that website......Also I'm not really sure what the heck kind of telecom gurus you all are, but 2 DS1's bonded together does not a DS3 make. A DS3 = 28 DS1s.......
I really don't understand why Sprint should refund a dime to your company. Sprint offered you a price and you agreed to it based on your own admissions. Did you ever seek offers from competitors during that time?
NPH @ May 22nd 2008 3:15PM
that's one helluva a tongue-twisting-title.
gabe @ May 22nd 2008 3:51PM
still a sprint
riggs @ May 22nd 2008 3:15PM
Oh man if only i could upgrade, but i just started my SERO plan in february :(
bjsguess @ May 22nd 2008 3:24PM
I heard that the phone wasn't able to be used with SERO. Hope that is wrong though. I'm holding off in hopes of it being SERO eligibe. My T-Mobile contract expires in a few weeks.
Bradley @ May 22nd 2008 3:57PM
It will not be available with any SERO plans. Unless you are an employee or an Advantage Club plan (sub accounts for employees) you have to sign up for the $99 Simply Everything plan
Bumble @ May 22nd 2008 4:05PM
You do not need to sign up for the Simply Everything Plan, just one of the Everything plans. Either the 450, 900 or Simply Everything, or one of the everything family plans that will be coming out along with the phone.
Bryan @ May 22nd 2008 4:29PM
you don't have to have an everything plan, Sprint just reccomends that you are one one to get the most out of the phone.
alex @ May 22nd 2008 3:15PM
i saw an ad for the instinct. it tried to show how "instinctive" it was to use by comparing starting the camera on it to starting it on the iphone.
of course the iphone was not as "instinctive" to use. cuz finding that one button on the iphone is so much harder than it is on the instinct.
lordofthedirectrix @ May 22nd 2008 3:47PM
That video was comparing the _video shooting_ abilities of the phones, not the cameras. Pay attention next time ;)
alex @ May 22nd 2008 3:56PM
i guess that goes to show how effective their advertising is
p3t3b2 @ May 22nd 2008 7:29PM
Do you honestly think those videos are the main advertising for the phone?... I'm sure the youtube videos don't even ad up to 0.5% of the Instincts $100 mil advertising budget.
alex @ May 22nd 2008 7:46PM
do you honestly think they would waste money on making a video regardless of where it was posted if it didnt generate some form of return for them?
tc1uscg @ May 23rd 2008 8:21AM
lordofthedirectrix .. moron.. he said CAMERA.. read the post next time.. duhh.
HARRYZWD @ May 22nd 2008 3:16PM
yeah! suck it Apple....
Justin @ May 22nd 2008 3:50PM
I'm sure people will be lined up for blocks......
for the new iPhone that is.
Fernando @ May 22nd 2008 3:50PM
yawn!
Zak @ May 22nd 2008 4:29PM
What should Apple suck? Should they suck on the fact that Sprint is coming out with an iPhone copy a year too late? Help me out here, how does this hurt Apple in any way?
FrankTheCrank @ May 22nd 2008 3:18PM
Oh yeah, it's all over for Apple.
I'm officially trading in my iPhone for this.
Like, duh....this IS the iPhone killer.
MastrCake @ May 22nd 2008 4:00PM
Do what you like.
I personally won't get the instinct. For three specific reasons.
1. Hello? The 3G iphone!?!?!?!
2. I am locked in an AT&T contract for another year and a half...
3. I HATE SPRINT!!! Terrible customer service, even worse than AT&T! Sure, they have nice pricing, but I need good coverage, no billing errors, and smart and helpful customer service (all of which Sprint does NOT have).
I am not saying that AT&T is better than Verizon (they aren't), but they work for me.
Have fun with your Instinct. I'll be having more fun with my 3G iPhone (when it come out).
Alright peeps, time to hit my low rank button! I would prefer you didn't, but it's bound to happen.
Chris @ May 22nd 2008 4:04PM
wow, uh, MastrCake, you COMPLETELY missed the sarcasm. made me laugh though, thanks.
MastrCake @ May 22nd 2008 4:14PM
Damnit I feel like such a dumbass....
:(
AGuy @ May 22nd 2008 3:19PM
I had heard that it was going to cost $200 with a contract. I've used a beta of this phone and wasn't very impressed. The os is slow, the apps are lame, and the touch screen is awful. I had also heard that it would come bundled with some specific plan that included data.
DefPo3t @ May 22nd 2008 3:32PM
I also hear that people say they heard all of things to sound cool or hate on a product they are axfanboy of a competitor. * typed on iPhone so accuse me of being a sprint lover* viva ms T-mobile!!
Yancy @ May 22nd 2008 3:23PM
The last of the dying breed...
chickenator @ May 23rd 2008 2:56AM
looks like it
iEye @ May 22nd 2008 3:25PM
Does it have "shake control"?
the new iPhone will crush this piece of junk...how dare another company try to compete with the mighty Apple. Apple should sue them for copying the rectangle...
iPhone FTW!
DefPo3t @ May 22nd 2008 3:35PM
the more you comment the dumber you sound, incase some didn't tell you already
p3t3b2 @ May 22nd 2008 5:28PM
The male species should sue you for having a penis!
Samantha Kreno @ May 22nd 2008 3:27PM
@AGuy: I'd agree with your evaluation. Slow OS, non-responsive touchscreen. I had to apply quite a bit of pressure on the screen to get a response and this was on "final" version software. The Web browsing experience is nothing compared to an iPhone, the UI and menus aren't intuitive. There's nothing "instinctual" about it -- you really do need a menu to use it.
At the end of the day, it is just a fancy phone. Not going to "kill" a robust mobile computing platform like the iPhone.
It will require an "Everything" plan, but there will be multiple price points of that launching with the phone. So SERO won't work.
p3t3b2 @ May 22nd 2008 5:40PM
Can you (and Guy) prove that you got to demo the phone whether beta or not? I am calling BS on this one. After all the Instinct did win best new device at the CTIA debut and that was a beta version.
Matt Vanandel @ May 22nd 2008 6:04PM
Good points. I'm still waiting for the HTC Touch Diamond or the Xperia 1, in any case. However, if Sprint decides to prevent Sero users from switching to the cooler, newer smartphones, I have absolutely no qualms with dropping my no-longer-in-contract Sero plan for an AT&T contract and 3G iPhone. Anyway, I'm keeping a very close eye on the game - and as far as I'm concerned the winner is the carrier with the coolest phone.
tc1uscg @ May 23rd 2008 8:22AM
Require everything. Stay out of the retail stores. They know nothing. That would be like saying you have to get the "data plan" if you buy a blackberry. WRONG.. Sprint will sale this phones at any level. It's a FRIGGIN phone. Not the 2nd coming fo christ (like people thought of the whyphone). And didn't some due in Japan just say the iPhone sucks. Just like WiMAX is dead? psst, japan guy..
sushi1869 @ May 30th 2008 2:43PM
According to nowisgood.com:
"Purchase of the Instinct requires activation on an Everything plan, starting at $69.99"
So you are required to have the "Everything" plan BUT there will be different price points for the "Everything" plan, probably being announced with the release of this phone.
Of course you can call Account Services/Retentions and bargain for deals.
Reid @ May 22nd 2008 3:27PM
Interesting choice to make the signal strength meter "backwards" from how most phones do it. Might be more intuitive because, at a glance, you can see how "far" from the edge of the screen the bars are.
You know, as if cell phone signal strength meters had anything to do with reality :)
tc1uscg @ May 23rd 2008 8:22AM
Well, since you suggested. When my bars go away, I have no service. So, I went with someone who had MORE bars in MORE places.. Sprint.. ;-p
cvpimp @ May 22nd 2008 3:31PM
This is probably the best Sprint can do for now. And most Beta versions of any phone are slower than the release version. I would rather have a phone with replacable batteries and insurance for when it breaks. The iphone has neither of these. I am not a Apple hater, i think they make great PC's but i want more choices than just iPOD this and that. Also fuck iTunes.
Duscrom @ May 22nd 2008 4:37PM
Yeah, I'm really getting tired of all this iPhone this iPhone that. Wahh Wahh, it's not the iPhone.
because, yes, We need Apple to have a bigger monopoly on Digital media, No competition in the Cell phone arena, and AT&T to monopolize the market.
Maybe i'm a bit bitter cause AT&T wants me to give them $600 just to get a phone with them... that's only the deposit, not the cost of the phone or anything like that.
ii for j @ May 22nd 2008 3:31PM
engadget, u rlly need sum new writers. Chris seems to be regressing on article to article basis. Myabe he's just taking more and more drugs, whatever the reason please do somthing about it.
Chris Ziegler @ May 22nd 2008 3:40PM
Do you have any specific complaints I can address?
SurKaz @ May 22nd 2008 3:50PM
I don't find this particular post of Chris to be any bad. Yes, I am slightly weirded out by the last sentence (maybe I haven't been on Engadget long enough), but I don't find it ..uh...Damn! No funny word can be made from Ziegler.... Better get a name change...
David Z. @ May 22nd 2008 10:37PM
Personally, I would take whatever someone who says "u rlly need sum new writers" and do the exact opposite.
derX @ May 22nd 2008 10:42PM
How is your second sentence (fairly) sound but your first and last ones are so screwed up?
Perhaps, it is you that is on drugs. In such a case, please get your hands away from teh intarwebz and acquire some treatment.
------------
BTW, the last sentence = xDD IMO...though if you think about it too much, you may kinda get disturbed with the thought of people surfin' this site in the nude....
Regardless, Chris, you rock and you know it.
Nick Ritch @ May 22nd 2008 3:31PM
11 days too late
iEye @ May 22nd 2008 3:35PM
they need to release it latest June 1st with a bang! at least 50 million in ads plastered all over, because when the new iPhone hits, the only thing that will matter is BATMAN!
All hail the 3G iPhone...
Jeff @ May 23rd 2008 12:02PM
word
PS3guy @ May 22nd 2008 3:56PM
No Apple logo on it no thanks I'll pass.
Rob Schoenfeld @ May 22nd 2008 3:46PM
Great choice for the Iphone haters such as myself. It's not a true smart phone, however. I think I'm going to hold out for the HTC Diamond. My HTC touch has served me well so far.
Justin @ May 22nd 2008 4:07PM
At least you won't have to wait in line to get one of these or the Diamond. However, I can't really see any other advantages.
Duscrom @ May 22nd 2008 5:05PM
Advantages:
Not AT&T
Cheaper data plans
Cell phone connection tethering
A multi-tasking OS (Not saying it's OS can't do multi-tasking, just apple won't allow 3rd party programs to do it)
No iTunes DRM
Better call quality.
Oh and HTC always puts goodies in with their phones, like having a clip pack so you can put the phone on your waist.
Oh and a REAL warranty that actually protects against accidental damage.
And Sprint will allow you to unlock the phone. and I'm sure if the Touch Diamond went to AT&T it'd be easily unlockable.
Hmm, I think I've made my point here.
