But how do you produce the electricity? Something's got to turn that crank and it isn't a superhero. Hydroelectric, solar, geothermal, and wind power is only a tiny percentage and is location dependent. Most use thermal power, frequently coal or nuclear. And with either option, a great deal of heat is generated and lost.

So, don't compare electric motors with combustion motors without calculating the efficiency of generating that electricity in the first place. We could use a car's combustion motor to turn a crank of a generator and store the energy electrically to power the car at 95% efficiency... but that would be pointless.

This device converts wasted industrial heat to usable energy. This is effective when the amount of heat being given off is enough to justify the cost of the device. At three years to break-even some companies will consider this. However, they could also just invest the same $$$ and earn 8-10% from day 1.

Walt

Comments on ElectraTherm's Green Machine converts waste heat into electricity

All vehicles have enormous square footage that's going to waste on the hood, dash, and roof. It could be relegated to solar trickle charging, which is perfectly fine for the VAST majority of drivers. This is sh!t that should have been done 50+ years ago. But no, it's not profitable enough for big oil.

Steam is nothing but a waste heat generator. Now toss in the inability to generate heat in the winter and the market has spoke. There's no 'big oil' conspiracy. Just a technology that made sense before people understood pollution, global warming, and peak oil.

Even today electric cars as we know them are a pretty big compromise. Hybrid seems a good choice for the present climate, but I wouldnt be surprised to see electric take over. That is after we build a whole heck of a lot of nuclear plants and retire all our coal plants first. Solar will not cut it. On top of it the idea of the automobile is past due. Ideally many US cities can work on public trans options to cut down on car demand.

lowbot

Comments on ElectraTherm's Green Machine converts waste heat into electricity

I think the internet is a pretty bad invention also. So why don't you cool it with the ad hominem attacks. The oil supply & distribution industry dominates the world economy. There's no conspiracy. It's all very out in the open and obvious to anyone with a brain. We've probably reached peak oil already. 92 octane is now $5 a gallon here in Los Angeles. It will be at least $50 by 2040. Which is about what we pay now for a gallon of Starbucks coffee. These are serious issues, yet everyone in this country has their head up their asses, make fun of Al Gore, etc.

The free market cannot address this problem until it's gotten really, really bad. Bad for everyone. If we wait that long, your grandkids will ride bicycles to work and never know what it's like to fly on an airplane. Or we can support government leadership to prepare for the crisis by investing in new technology and Apollo-like projects.

Sean O

Comments on ElectraTherm's Green Machine converts waste heat into electricity

@Walt: using engines to generate electricity for motor propulsion is in use with very efficient locomotives. check out GE's locomotives. they run diesel generators that power strong as hell motors and get 100's miles per gallon.

http://travel.howstuffworks.com/diesel-locomotive1.htm

eh

Comments on ElectraTherm's Green Machine converts waste heat into electricity

I think this is a great first step!
