LG intros M3800S-BN / M2900S-BN stretched display monitors in UK

Though not the first stretched display we've seen per se, LG is taking widescreen to an entirely new plateau with its latest duo of monitors. Launched today in the UK, the 38-inch M3800S-BN and 29-inch M2900S-BN feature oddball resolutions like 1,366 x 398 and 1,366 x 480 (respectively) along with a 1,000:1 contrast ratio, 9-millisecond response time and a VGA input. Obviously geared for digital signage applications, both units can display imagery horizontally or vertically, and while price points weren't disclosed, we'll go ahead and assume that they'll be pegged for purchase on those business-centric credit cards (if you catch our drift).

Those resolutions suck. 480 pixels? Please, my iPod touch has 480 pixels on one side too. Not to mention this is 38-inches, thus rendering anything displayed on it completely unviewable.

they're designed for commercial applications (eg advertising boards). The average person viewing one of these will be at least 10ft away so there's no need for a higher resolution

Addendum: if you're watching a letterboxed/cinemascope movie (you know like the resolution they actually show in the theater) on a 720p capable tv you're not going to see much more than what you see on these LG resolutions. You're just wasting black pixels on the top and the bottom, that is unless you have subtitles on, and they are overlapping onto the letterbox area.

I get it, but I would still just buy an HD 1080p tv, even if they offered a 1920x720 screen.

I just have 2 19" screens @ 1080x1024 that I stretch 2.whatever:1 movies across. Gap subtracted, there's 30 inches of video. The only problem is the 1 inch gap between em, but I got used to that.

Honestly, I don't see the point in stretching it across only 1 plane. Rather than giving the convenience of more space, it is a bit too much space laterally and too little vertically.

In flash, it annoys me a bit how I have tons of space on the sides but barely any space vertically.

Now, this would be pretty epic if it could be rotated sideways, so you could read stuff vertically.

they already have those that stretch both vertically and horizontally. this a niche product which gives lots of space but wont dominate its surroundings.

I'd love to up the res a bit and make those desktop monitors. 1 widescreen isn't enough, and 2 widescreens is too much. I prefer my 2 normal monitors, but a seamless display that wide would be awesome for work.

These monitors aren't meant for consumers. They're meant for leaderboard advertisers, for use in places like casinos, restaurants and hotels, where you see these in action all the time.

A quick Google search will return you hundreds of other models from a wide array of suppliers, including Sony and Samsung, boasting the same industry standard 2:35:1 ratio.

Here's some links to a few different models in various formats. LG does take honours for coverage, but they are available if you look for them. Try ringing your local supplier, I'm positive they'll be able to put you onto somebody who can give you some details. These types of monitors generally aren't available to just anybody, but rather commercial customers, like casinos and hotels, as mentioned previously.

Most special size LCD's seem to be nice cut-jobs instead of new panels. Thats why the resolution is like this. So pleazze go square now! I want a 1200x1200 panel at 60x60cm for arcades!

First I thought that too, but I really start to like the the way the blockiness of old school games is visible at high res LCD's. Also blackness of new LCD's is getting good enough for Pac-Man and co. On the other hand, I have found the perfect OpenGL tridot overlay that makes the LCD image almost identical to a classic CRT one. You can even add curvature if you like.

I don't know, maybe its just growing up with a welfare arcade, that just closed recently and still had Mortal Kombat II (original case and everything) as one of the best games, but if the game is coin op, it should have a CRT screen or a shiny metal ball :D
