AMD jumps into the netbook game, challenges opponents to a duel
Clearly not content with letting Intel, VIA, and now NVIDIA own the market on the architectures of miniature, budget laptops, grumpy underdog AMD showed off what look to be some reference designs that would sit nicely next to the Eees of the world. At Computex 2008, the company unveiled two models: a white, 8.9-inch Linux laptop with 1GB of RAM, an AMD CPU, the ATI RS690 chipset, and an almost MacBook-like black XP-based model with a 7-inch 1280 x 600 display (that's some pixel density!), a 60GB or 80GB hard drive, and 1GB of RAM.
Update: We've got some video of the black model, apparently a touchscreen device, in action after the break.

nice, I;m sure it'll be cheaper than the Intel counterparts too.
And much less powerful as well.
why are all amd articles full of intel fan boy garbage, but almost no amd fan boys attack intel articles? why are all microsoft articles full of apple fan boy garbage but almost no microsoft fan boys attack apple? .
@Wes: excuse me? Have you ever read an Apple article on this site? Almost 90% of the comments are anti-apple in there.
@Stupid name
here are the last three apple hardware related topics
http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/03/ihome-launches-the-ih69-and-ih70-computer-speaker-ipod-docks/#comments
http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/02/iclooly-ipod-touch-stand-hopes-to-be-an-imac-when-it-grows-up/
http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/30/griffin-powerdock-2-charges-iphones-and-ipods-two-at-a-time/
there is NO mention of microsoft anywhere, only apple retards arguing about who's accessory is better. get real fella.
Wes wins the Engadget 2008 award for........
Most Creative Nickname!
I said they were anti-apple and they are for the greater part. Fact of the matter is that those articles are about accesoires that have no relation to Apple in any way. If you had looked for an article containing news about a new iMac/Macbook Pro/... or maybe even about the iPod you would have seen very different comments.
Maybe you should talk to a psychologist about all that suppressed Apple rage you're showing here.
You guys all fukin fail because your trying to gain attention by replying to the first damn poster.
Shut up, go home and cry because you want to be better than everyone else, but you know, deep inside you can not. Because FAIL is your middle name.
I love how in the picture they didn't even have room for a semi-colon/colon key next to the L.
I don't personally have anything against Apple's computers or products. I see them as a positive influence on other companies to curve out more aesthetic friendly devices without sacrificing the number-crunching or power requirements, that being said, the Mac OSX has no place for me as a person who enjoys gaming and other applications and would rather not fuss with boot camp or lack of upgrade-ability. I don't think that Apple should be harped on for creating a user-friendly product with good design aesthetics, nor should they be praised for being the industrial leader in proprietary hardware and lack of applicable functionality. They (Windows and OSX) are both individual operating systems with different intentions. OSX is more specialized while Windows is more broad. This causes discrepancies in performance as well as value and availability in products for each OS. As a company, both Apple and Microsoft have done their fair share of shitty things. They are, however, companies. This means there is the general desire to protect their investments by doing said shitty things. My sentiment is, neither company is worth /root-ing for but rather that we should expect the addition of features of one to impact both in a positive way providing us with a much more desirable product.
Case in point, let those who ignorantly follow the products of a company or industry (see: fad) continue on their sheepish ways, in any situation. Arguing is unnecessary as no one here is just going to convert someone to a separate belief with a simple blog comment (even this one will doubtfully have an impact). Let's just go on living our lives with our personal preferences as personal and not work at others for their beliefs. This doesn't mean you can't share your beliefs at all, in fact, I cherish the opinions of others; however, to attack others while disregarding morality... that's just disregarding humanity as well.
Of course some would take into consideration that this is the internet and that everyone is "entitled" to their opinion. I can consider this; however, there should be some sort of morality to our sentiments. I doubt that everyone here would agree with that same sentiment if someone just simple skipped their jolly way up and began blatantly insulting everything a person loved and then posed "This is America, I'm entitled to my opinion." Again, this is the internet, but that does not entitle you to be a complete ***hole. That is why the ban-hammer exists, that's why the comment-rating system exists. The internet isn't dis-ambiguous, there is a right and wrong.
Sorry, I /ranted... it seems like every article on this blasted site (be it Apple, Microsoft, Rock, or Stone :P) seems to spark some sort of un-called-for argument.
@ metkis
Nobody cares! Just shut up and get back to the article!
Since OP brought up price I thought this might be of interest:

It will be 300k won to 400k wan which is $300 to $400 according to google.
SWEET! AMD needs to be in the mosh-pit!
Stop saying netbook. I'll be forced to sue Engadget for "lame attempt at feigned coolness". It's a law. It's on the books. Look it up.
Arrrrrggggggghhhhhhh.
blame intel
LOL.
you make an entertaining point. But old chap, this is not Engadget's phrase. This is Intel's. It is as good as any... think about it; these devices are NOT made for :
1. Laps
2. Notes
3. Desks
4. Palms
They are Ultra mobile, true, but not by definition, because no the whole, they are pretty well 92% sized keyboards; they can't be UMPC's.
So if we start to remove nomenclature derived from the actual physical "place of use", we then have to examine "naming" for short, in terms of actual intended purpose.
It is true, that some mobile devices, referred to as "mobile" phones (cell phones), are now rather loosely linked to "phones" in the pure sense of the device usage. To briefly elaborate with the help of Wiki;
"Phone - short for Telephone"
"Telephone"
....device that is used to transmit and receive sound (most commonly speech), usually two people conversing but occasionally three or more. It is one of the most common household appliances in the world today...
Since the phones being sold by companies like HTC, in terms of its wonderful UI shown in the HTC touch, are no longer JUST being used to convey voice, or not all, it might be better to refer to them as something like "Utility Device with telecommunication features" - "UDTF" ?
BACK ON TRACK:
The Netbook is primarily envisaged, because of its relatively low power, to be primarily used to surf the net, or facilitate Web 2.0 activities and beyond. It is NOT, definitely NOT designed to have local applications running for processing purposes.
If you think about it in these terms, well... it kind of fits the bill.
All CAPITALS for EMPHASIS not for shouting, (I hope that was clear).
Points well made. Especially the Intel part. Deeper pockets to sue! :)
Regardless of the utility of the term, it still sounds like a speech impediment when pronounced. Not to kiss up to our website overlords (hi, there!), why not just call it a gadget? It's a better catch-all term that's been around for a while that most people understand.
Next think I know, folks will want me to be cloud computing with my netbook. {shudders}
They are laptops. They are made for laps. Have you ever tried to use counter space while sitting on a bar stool in a coffee shop?
I prefer the term cheap subnotebook (10,6" and below).
Ah! Cheap + subnotebook = chubbook.
There's a term I can get behind! We could even call 'em Chubbies for short! Seriously. I like it.
/wanders off wondering if anyone else knows what I'm talking about . . .
are trackpeds not considered important anymore?
i guess it's.....touch screen?
Ha, my thoughts exactly, well my first one was, "hey, this looks good... wait a second..." Ugh what do people have against normal trackpads.
Amen Brothers
Nice big trackpads or touchscreens are always appreciated.
No, it's "Multi-Touch", combining 2008's two most annoying buzzwords. ;-)
Looks like there's a trackpoint at the very bottom, not very ergonomic.
The little white thingy you see below the spacebar (halfway covered by the "news") looks eerily similar to the cursor control on the Raon Digital Everun, which was an optical sensor that worked a lot like an upside down optical mouse.
And it's probably/hopefully touchscreen too :)
Now would you really want to make the unit all that much bigger to fit a trackpad onto it? ;)
No, but nipples are important.
Is trackped another word for treadmill?
now thats a sub notebook, if only the screen was flush with no bezel :(
But then, where would they pt all the AMD logos?
Where's the trackpad/eraser-tip/etc? I don't see any form of cursor control.
Is there something I'm not seeing or do we just bring our own mouse to the party? Touchscreen perhaps (seems unlikely)?
as best I can tell its the white spot above the 'n' and 'e' in news with buttons on either side.
I'm not sure why Charlie got ranked low here; he's spot on. That looks like a cursor controller.
Could seriously outperform the intel atom performance wise.
Makes you wonder about bettery life.
how is that even remotely "mac book like"? its stupid like the other netbooks but its not even close to being the worst thing ever.
And your reasoning for a MacBook being the 'worst thing ever' is...?
netbook? Just 'cuz jkkmobile uses that term doesn't make it correct
subnote (or sub-notebook) is the correct term. get it right engadget!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subnotebook
sub note book aslo refers to screens above 10 inches. there is no real term yet for these devices but people seem to be gravitating towards netbook.
also, wikipedia is not an authority on this subject.
Granted wiki isn't the greatest source, but the point is that there has been a general consensus about the term. There will always be a discrepancy about terms, I'm just supporting subnote over netbook and I'm supporting engadget to choose subnote over netbook
That actually looks pretty nice for a seven incher. I like the lack of trackpad but I'm not exactly sure how you're supposed to get around on that thing. Hopefully there is a touchscreen or something. This does look pretty cool I must say but I'd have to see specs, release date, and price in order to even consider this.
..."That actually looks pretty nice for a seven incher."...thats what she said.
i dig on the black one. looks like a thinkpad mated with a macbook. that might be my craptop of choice if text is legible at that pixel density.
i was almost sold on the Mini-Note, but the processor is too slow.
The MSI Wind looks like it has the right stuff, but the resolution is too low.
Still waiting for someone to make the winning combination:
atom/isaiah proc
8.9" with 1280xWhatever resolution
usable keyboard with near full-size keys
1+ GB ram
60+ GB HD or 16+ GB SSD
3+ hr battery life
around 2.5 lbs
quality product design
$500- pricetag
why is this so difficult?
The Eee 901 has all of those requirements except for the keyboard and build specifications because those are subjective so you'd have to evaluate for yourself. And only $50 more dollars than your price point.
hmmm... dual core - me like - me want - me get when again??
dual core on a sub-notebook? why?
to ki$$ my shiny metal @$$ thats why ... looks at the task manager - two cores ... huh?!!
Optical mouse is at the base of the unit as Charlie said. They take a little getting used to but as they have an integrated button and can perform excelent scrolling i'd be happy with it.
In fact, I recon the device is made by the same people that make the Everun.
http://www.umpcportal.com/2008/06/is-this-little-gem-a-new-raon-digital-umpc/
I also think 1280 is a typo. 1024x600 more like which works very nicely on a 7"er after a few sizing tweaks. FF3 with real scaling is a dream.
Steve.
damn the stickers! without those, they could've made the screen a lot larger.
I really like the design of the black one. Sell that at around 400 and I'm buying.
$350
